As previously answered by Hogrider, it is pretty easy to take on and off.  Nationals had the provisional, now permanent  Limited Optics category, which doesn't require the removal of the magwell.  All things being equal, I prefer to leave it on and run in Limited Optics.

    Thanks.

my gun arrived yesterday.  Custom Works version.  Magwell was simple to take off.  Good combo gun…..CO, LO.

I’m waiting on my Gray Gun trigger kit.  But when I checked my trigger currently in the gun it’s right around….average….4.25 lbs.  a friend of mine got 2.5 lb with his Gray Gun kit.

What are you guys with GG kit getting on trigger pull?

    thanks

I also wondered why a chamber flag wasn’t used in a RFP being’s you don’t drop the hammer. Only problem I see is most won’t fit in a holster with a flag inserted.

Most scholastic matches, and maybe Rimfire Challenge requires chamber flag in pistols.  I very rarely see a holstered Rimfire pistol.  Most, if not all are cased.  In fact, in SCSA most center fired handguns are cased.  Why lug around a heavy pistol.

PCCs must pull the trigger to prove the gun is unloaded, just like other centerfire divisions.  And yes we realize inserting the flag causes the trigger to reset, but the PCC has already been proven clear with the previous trigger pull and the chamber flag that is inserted after thay serves as an indicator.

Jodi, we (our match RO’s) are sticklers for safety and the rules in 8.3 Range Commands.  There is enough use of the words “chamber flags” to distinguish between in the chamber vs sticking something down in magwell.  If a PCC is uncashed with twine only in magwell the shooter will be told to insert the twine inside the chamber when we go thru the unload and show clear phase.  Sometimes we have extra big bore chamber flags to hand out.  A bolt closed on a chamber flag should be proof positive the chamber is empty.  I personally don’t like twine…. In any circumstance but that’s me.

I was just curious how/why the extra step was part of the procedure.  Handguns (thankfully) are not flagged so different from PCC other than both are centerfire.

Anyway, this is not a fall on a sword item…..just curiosity.

    thanks

Yes.  A piece of thin trimmer string or a zip tie inserted through the port and down the magwell may allow an out of battery firing if there is still a round in the chamber.

Another reason- consistency (also with USPSA rules).  All centerfire guns are hammer down.  All long guns require a chamber flag.  All pistols do not require a chamber flag.  Rimfires are a special case, because hammer down will eventually damage the gun.

I don’t disagree regarding magwell.  But to me twine in magwell is not a chamber flag.  If twine or flag were inserted in the chamber, I doubt there could be a round in there.  Yes?

Rimfire was only mentioned as a comparison because it’s a single step to put in chamber flag.  No one hammers down rimfire.

  5. @shred @JodiH  dry fire rimfire not the question.

Hammer down on PCC after unload show clear….basically pulling bolt back a second time then flag.  So the question is why the hammer down on PCC before flagging?  Since a rule, is this step a safety precaution for something?

I can ask Troy or send an inquiry to Zack but I was curious what others know about this.

    thanks

  6. PCC……At every match we (RO’s) get questioned on why PCC’s require the hammer down step before flagging.  The answer is because it’s in the rules.

    RFPO…..no hammer down….no flag…Case or holster.

RFRO….no hammer down….flag…Case or secure in cart.

I know the argument about not dry firing rimfire.  But if PCC’s are to be flagged, why add the step of hammer down?

RFPO…..what makes it different from RFRO with no flag being required?

clearly I’m retired and bored today so too many random thoughts 😂

Striker fired guns still have a trigger safety, like the dingus on a Glock or hinge on M&P

I know.  This thought is one I’ve had for years.  Holster covers trigger guard.  Trigger finger not engaged inside the trigger guard until after the draw….same for both style guns.  Striker guns nowadays have some awesome triggers.  I’m not advocating……I’m always been somewhat curious about the difference in competitions.

BTW…..carry vs competition different story in my mind.  Stock striker trigger and stock hammer fired triggers for everyday carry.

  8. Apparently the new shooter was not familiar with how to lower the hammer.  It was after the match when we discussed what happened with the DQ.

next time he will be given the option to shoot limited if he wants to avoid lowering the hammer.

Side comment:  Exposed hammer back.  Must be locked and safety on.  Striker fire gun with trigger job and light pound pull…..internally cocked.  No safety….no fuss.  Slap and fire.  What’s the real difference between this striker fired gun and one with exposed hammer cocked and safety not on?  Trigger pull about same weight on both guns.

I’ve done that to shoot in limited.

I’m not a CZ guy so not knowledgeable about all the models.  Would it be legal under SCSA to shoot it as Limited and leave it cocked and locked?

  10. Last week I learned that a new shooter was DQ’d after AD trying to lower the hammer on his CZ.  I understand he had never done this and the hammer slipped and round fired.

I understand the DA/SA issue but without a de-cocker, would it not be safer to treat it as SA with safety engaged?

    Thoughts?

  11. It should be simple:

    1. Keep long guns flagged and cased.

    2. or take case to safe table and transfer to cart.

    3. don’t touch the gun until called to the line to shoot or at safe table.

    4. end of match, re-case from carts at safe table.

    5. go home.

  12. Geissele SD-3G, but also get their competition trigger springs that are sold separately and install the lighter one.  This will gve you a Lighter trigger pull with strong hammer spring.........very good combination for me in my 15-22.  100% reliable for me.

  13. @JodiH and others.  At recent matches handling of PCC and RFR's have come up.  I will set up a few points as consice as possible:

1.1 Cold Range.  Interpreted to be what to expect when a shooter arrives at a match.

Par 1. states that PCC and RFR's must have chamber flags and be cased or secured in a cart.

2.4 Safety Areas.  Essentially host must have safety areas (tables) for the match and identified with signs.  Tier II adds the words "bounderies clearly shown".

8.1.7 The on-deck competitor MAY unbag or remove firearm from cart into a side berm or staging area PROVIDED the bay being used as sufficient side-berm space to permit this practice.  Once removed; muzzle reasonably vertical up/down.

10.3.1 Automatic DQ for Unsafe gun handling specifically OUTSIDE the bounderies of a STAGING area or SAFETY area.

10.1.13 The last paragraph has caused some discussion.  The berm/backstop is NOT required while removing/returning a properly flagged long gun from/to a vehicle provided all other safety rules are followed.

My comments and viewpoints for discussion:

10.1.13 first.  This does not allow for long guns to be transported from/to a vehicle flagged and vertical up/down.  Must be in a flagged and in a case.  Transferring a long gun from a case to a cart must be down at a safe table.

8.1.7 regarding the on-deck handling of a long gun.  Unless the bay has specifically defined staging area against a berm or a specific safe table, long guns are not to be handled until the shooter is called to the line and given make ready command.

The glossary defines Staging Area as " A designated portion of a range where only long guns may be cased and uncased prior to or after completing a course of fire."

So shooters can't assume they can face any berm and uncase and walk over the line vertical up or down.  At our range, we have ONE Safety Table and thats it.  No other bounderies marked.  A shooter can't determine there is sufficient space against a berm.

    Comments?

  14. I was reading an Enos post titled HHF and Classification and a few of you posted similar comments on it then.  There’s a lot more new people posting now.  Problems with the system, random classifier adjustments, etc.

The post was in 2008……16 yrs ago.  I suppose it’s difficult to identify areas of concern and to get HQ’s attention.

For transparency, I am now an exclusive SCSA shooter (age and physical issues) but some of this discussion regarding classification’s is similar to SCSA regarding changing classifier peak times.  It’s been interesting reading your posts.

I've been shooting with Ken since 2010 or so.  He is a great guy, but can come off as a grumpy turd at times, but it's an act.  I think he will do a great job.

Does Ken also shoot Steel Challenge or run SC matches?

They went into Executive session to discuss financials. I guess that means that the members will never see the full financial status of the org.

BOD is required to post 2023 financials.  I believe the budget discussions in recent meeting is for 2024.  During the last meeting I believe I heard the MD voice some concern with revenue drop in early 2024 and how to use early data for budget projection.  This was also mentioned in A6’s recent podcast.  Members will eventually see both 2024 budget and 2023 financials.
