  1. I have Dawson extended firing pins in both my limited and open guns. It definitely helped my open gun that has a lighter main spring. My limited gun already would ignite anything, but the Dawson is a quality part I thought was worth replacing my stock one with. And the primer flow issue it’s suppose to help. Don’t know anything about further modifications. It seems to work pretty well as is.
  2. Among other things, the extended firing pin is supposed to help stop primer flow.
  3. No you’re right, it doesn’t effect the velocity or anything. Federal ars so soft that even below major velocity the primers get incredibly flat. The problem I see is you can’t get an accurate reading of pressure signs. Here’s what they look like at about 1250fps, 124g bullet so 155 pf. These things look like the load is dangerously over pressure, but there not. Because the next pictures is the same load but with Federal SRP, then below that is win small pistol. And they look totally fine. So my problem with the fed spp is there’s really no way to gauge pressure. It doesn’t get any flatter then this, so there’s no way to tell when pressure increase from here. Typically with primers that arent this soft you can slowly see the pressure going up, primers gradually get flatter etc among other things. I’d never get to a change where they look like this with other primers. But l agree with you that it doesn’t matter if they look like this, since I know the load isnt way over pressure, which is why I’m going to use them up and not worry about it. But I’ll buy federal SRP from now on. I always work up with either fed srp or win spp or rifle. This way I can actually watch for pressure. Once I confirm the load is safe I’ll use these spp.
  4. Anyone have a phone number for venom? I want to see about having some work done to my open gun.
  5. Berry’s makes those thick plated bullets rated up to 1500fps. Although I’ve ran regular Berry’s plated in my open gun before. Accuracy was fine. For the most part I’ve been running blue bullets, polymer coated. I’ve put around 2000 though it and haven’t cleaned the comp at all, and it doesn’t look like it needs it either. With that said, I may switch to a jacketed bullet when I finish up all the blues I have.
  6. I just moved from a Glock to a 2011, so of course I had a huge stash of federal primers. I won’t be buying more of the regular small pistol after the 8k I have left run out. They’re to soft for 9 major. Primer gets totally flattened, and with fed SRP or even win Spp they look great. And this is With a load that’s like 100 FPS under major too. Same load that used to make major in my g34. I’d buy fed srp if I could find them. Then either win or cci.
  7. I just bought a used trubor recently and a few days ago installed the same trigger group as you. When i first installed it everything worked fine. Then I got this idea that I won’t go into but I messed with it and then the hammer wouldn’t lock back, sounds like the same issue you’re having. So I took it back apart, didn’t adjust anything, put it back together and it was back to working right. I put a few hundred rounds though it yesterday and it ran without hiccup. The pull is 1.5lb. But I think when I messed with it and the hammer stopped locking back the sear spring might have idk shifted around or something, wasn’t positioned right. Idk, wish I knew what caused it when it happened to me. But it works now. I’m thinking some part of the leaf spring is the cause of your issue.
  8. Been off work the last few days so I got to really put the pantera though it’s paces. 3 days in a row, 400 rounds a day, no cleaning or lubing besides what I did before day one and she just ran and ran. Shot a lot of Clays, so the gun wasn’t even that dirty after 3 days and 1200rds. I usually shoot titegroup, so even after 200-300 the guns pretty filthy. Not a single malfunction. The new 21rd mag worked perfect too. Probably ran 15-20 full mags and didn’t have any problems. The feed lips on the 40 mags a are bit wider then the follower, so it sticks out a bit. But it works fine. Coming up on the 5k mark pretty soon. Don’t see much changing soon. I’m more interested in how it does at 10k. As sps confirmed the internals are Mim. But I’ve Ben doing quite a bit of reading on modern MIM parts and according to bill wilson thru should last forever. Apparently Wilson. Combat uses them in their production gun. And quality modern mim parts are extremely durable, and can last 10s of thousands of rounds. So I guess I probably won’t touch the trigger group. But I do want to bend the sear spring a bit to bring the trigger down a bit. Currently it’s around 2.5lbs. Like to get it around 2. The trigger in my open gun Is around 1.5, so I’d like to get them closer. Mods: is there anyway we could change the thread title to Sps pantera review? That’s what this has become. And there really isn’t much info out there about these guns, and how they hold up over time. This could be a good reference. There wasn’t really one when I bought mine.
  9. I talked to the guys at eagle, and they confirmed this is a para based gun. Looks nice but I think they made a mistake. They should have brought in another sps 2011 based gun like the Vista star or the vista 9mm long, or something. It says “coming soon” but he confirmed there is a limited number of them in the country already, with more to come in 2019. I think another 2011 based gun for under 2k would have really done well, much like the sps pantera and vista have so far. They would have to sell this for under 1500 I think for people to think it’s a good value. I definitely would have considered another SPS possibly an open gun, as my pantera limited gun has been 100% perfect. But being that it’s assmbled by metro arms, I’m sure it will be a tight fitting, very reliable run. MAC somehow knows how to build them tight, yet make them run perfect from the first time you pull the trigger.
  10. I would like to onos this too. I want to put a Dawson magwell on my sps, but don’t want to buy a new grip just yet. I bet it could be done, cutting off the Magwell. Maybe I’ll try it when I actually have the money for a new grip. That way if I ruin it I can just buy the new one.
  11. I’ve read a few accounts that some CKs sometimes come short chambered. I would get it reamed a bit more, atleast so you can load out to 1.160-1.170. Although, from what I’ve heard checmates have pretty short throats and people load short like that without issue. So, maybe work up some loads. Although overall these guns seem to run a bit better with longer loads. You’ll just have to experiment. It’s pretty cheap to have it reamed, gans charges 50 bucks. And you won’t have to send your whole gun, which costs a lot due to the insurance, just the barrel.
  12. The Brazos trigger I just dropped in my open gun is super nice. Really unbelievable that it’s a drop in unit. It’s actually just under 1.5lbs, comes in at 1lb 6-7ozs. It doesn’t feel to light though. Passes all safety checks. It’s crisp as hell, much nicer reset then the old one, and the one in my limited gun. So I would like to drop in a Brazos into my limited gun. I keep thinking 150 bucks is expensive, then I remember that I paid 200-300 for my Glock triggers. 150 is actually pretty good.
  13. The hammer hooks are still sharp, and it doesn’t look like there’s much of any wear on either the seat or hammer. The trigger worked well in the gun before I replaced it. So I guess it would probably still be fine? Here’s some more pics.
  14. Hello so I started rebuilding my open gun that I i bought used a few months back. It was a custom built gun on a PT frame, trubor slide, so not a stock trubor. I dropped a new Brazos trigger group in it. Probably didn’t need to, but I wanted too. So I have the old hammer, sear and everything out now and I can’t tell if it’s still in good shape, or not. If it is I’d like to put it in my limited gun. It gave a pretty nice 1.5lb pull. The internals is my limited gun are mim parts, so swapping to these would be an upgrade. I’m assuming they are decent parts since they were choosen for this custom build. I’m pretty new to 1911/2011s, so how can I tell if the angles are still correct, and everything is still good to go? Here’s some pics, I can take more specific ones by request if that will help people.
  15. I’m having the same issue but with hs6. Load chronod in the 100 degree N.C. summer at around 168-169pf, and the same load was down 10-12pf a few weeks ago at around 45-50 degrees. I’m gonna probably going to have to go from 7.5 up to 8gs to get back to 168-170. I guess all powders have some degree of sensitivity. But us here in the south it really shows due to the extreme temps in the summer.
  16. Are you talking about the ultra thin +1 followe? Or the universal? I just put some of the ultra thin +1s in my 40 mags and got 21. Ran perfectly too through 300 . rounds. I have the same one in an mbx 170 and I get 30rds. But To be perfectly honest my luck with sti 9/38 mags isn’t as good as the 40 s mag. Not terrible by any means, but occasional nose dives, maybe one out of a few hundred rounds. But I like 100% reliability.
  17. I just put the taran low pro followers in my 40 mags. Now I get an easy 21rds in a 140mm sti gen 2 mag, Dawson snl basepad. I can load the 21st with my fingers, don’t even have to use the mag loader, I can almost get the 22nd round. I wonder if I had a professional do it if it would be possible. I’m good with 21 though. I tested it out today and ran probably 6 full mags though it and it ran 100%. I just hate that it kinda pops out of the top of the mag. I get 30rds in my 9mm 170mm mags using the taran low pro follower, and so it definitely gives you one extra mag round in any mag you choose. The one in my 170 is actually an old bolen follower, but it’s exactly the same as the new tti.
  18. On another note. My load for my open Glock was 7.5g hs-6 with a jacketed bullet or 7.3 with coated lead and it was right around 1360-1375fps. I don’t know the exact length of the barrel, stock g34 is 5.3, then a threaded barrel is a bit longer so probably 5.5-5.6. Well this same load in my 5 inch trubor is only around 1250. I’m gonna have to go up to 8grs to get back to 1350. I just can’t believr I lost 100 fps by dropping .3-.5 of an inch off the barrel. Another factor I’ve been thinking about is that load in the Glock was really only shot in the summer time, which is like all but 4 months of the year down here. The load was chronod in probably 95+ degeee temps. When I ran it over the chrono out of my trubor it was around 40-45 degrees. So a 50+ degree difference. Ive been searching to see how temperature sensitive hs-6 is with much luck. I’m thinking that the temperature had more to do with the loss in velocity then the slight difference in barrel does. I’m sure the barrel has some effect, but losing over 100 fps due to a loss of half an inch seems a bit much. Anyone have experience with temp changes and hs-6?
  19. Hmm, good to know. My gun is built on a PT frame, which I’ve heard are very precise. Whatever safety I choose, I’m gonna have the company i choose fit it. I’m not gonna mess with it. .
  20. I’ve actually had my eyes on the infinity safety’s. They’re a bit expensive though. But should last forever. I like how I can get one that’s wider on my side as a lefty.
  21. So I just installed the new main spring that came with the Brazos trigger group, which is a 17lb. And the trigger is still just as nice. It’s coming in on my gauge at just under 1.5lbs. 1lb 6-7ozs. This new spring when compared to the old one I pulled out was dramatically stiffer. The hammer seems to fall with a bit more authority now too. I’m hoping to get reliable ignition of different primers now. If I don’t with a 17 I have no problem going up to a 19. I don’t need a 1.5lb trigger. 2lbs is good with me. So if going up in weight makes it a bit heavier that’s fine with me. Im surprised I didn’t see any change here in pull weight going to the new stiffer spring ? I’m wondering if maybe the one that was in it was already a 17. But the new one felt much stiffer. Who knows. All in all, this Brazos trigger is great.
  22. Ya man, the Brazos trigger is really nice. Apparently he puts each trigger group he sells into a gun first and tunes it. So the sear spring is bent right, he cuts the angles on the sear and hammer. The only thing some people have to fit is the safety, which I didn’t even have to do. I’d buy another one of these in a heart beat. And I will be probably before it gets warm out for my sps.
  23. Same plastic grip, but the limited gun is much more comfortable for my big hands because the magwell is shaped differently. It’s also smaller. I’m planning on making them as similar as possible. The sps comes with an intergrated magwell, so it doesn’t take up any spcace on the grip like the other one does. But I also can’t change it which sucks because I would like one with a bigger opening. So I think what I’m going to do is put the DVC grip on the trubor with the new big hands magwell, then take the old plastic grip from the trubor and put it on the limited gun with the same big hands magwell. Ideally I would put a dvc grip on the limited gun also and that’s the plan. Just need to wait until after Christmas when I’m not so broke. Then I’d like to put SVI long flat triggers in both guns, as well as new ambi safety’s that are a little larger on the right side for lefty’s. Try and make the two guns feel as similar as possible.
  24. Ya I’ve thought about tommy guns. He’s about 1.5 hours from me. I’m off work all next week, so I can finally make some phone calls during business hours. So I’m gonna call a few places. I guess whoever seems the most informative and I Guess just gives me the best feeling will get my business. Tommy guns would be ideal though since I wouldn’t have to ship the gun. And yes, a slide racker is a great idea. Didn’t even think of that.
