  1. I agree. I finally got to run mine at a steel challenge match. Coming from janky open glocks, it's a beautiful gun.
  2. I drilled my RIA 1911 for the Cheely SRO mount, 5 hole pattern using my Harbor Freight mini mill. I have DROs rigged up, so it was super easy. As long as you have your mill, vice, and whatnot set up right, it is just fine for it from what I can tell. But then again, I'm a total hack, so take my experience for what it's worth.
  3. I'm in the same boat. I plan to pick one up, but I've bought pretty heavily into the RMR pattern mount, and really don't want to deal with another. Though based on wait times and all, I may just order the DPP one if the RMR isn't out by October.
  4. I have seen classifiers relatively consistently state "Box A", "Box B", etc. But I rarely, if ever have seen the shooting area actually "defined" in a major match's briefing. It simply says something to the effect of, "engage targets as they become visible from within the shooting are". Language like that still can confuse people that are doing their best to not be reasonable.
  5. I've found this concern curious, as I've not had much trouble with my Glock handling it, though to be fair I'm maybe a bit over 10k rounds only. So I'd hope that an aluminum frame gun would be fine. I don't plan on doing popples, milling a ton of weight off the slide, or going crazy extreme with springs or whatever. So I'd imagine it would last.
  6. So I've been shooting an open Glock for a number of years, and I figure I should get away from it. Since I apparently like to make questionable choices, it seemed to me that after playing with the Platypus customization thing, it may end up pretty close to ticking the open boxes. Make it up with the threaded barrel, magwell, lightened trigger. Then realistically, drill/tap the frame for the optic mount and screw on a compensator. I've not dealt with the 1911/2011 platform much, what other bits would need to be tweaked? Or is this as much a fool's endeavor as an open Glock?
  7. Probably not helpful, but I found that happening with a G17 open build of mine as well. My only possible guess was that the gun was more violent and something was bouncing? But I just took it out since I shouldn't be shooting to empty anyhow.
  8. Sure have checked it out. The state does a "points series" to get people to frequent some of the other clubs. I've got mine in on that for the past number of years and have been able to get a handful of metro folks up here to shoot throughout a season. So I've been attempting to grow that way, but I've since focused more on converting and retaining more local folks. I have found that the demographics of this area are more "I train for tha streets" IDPA folks, so I try use IDPA as a gateway for USPSA. It's been working relatively well. I think there are 5-6 clubs/matches that shoot down there with much more frequency, so those folks have a lot more options, much closer to make it not worth driving 2+ hours. It just is what it is living up in nowhere. Or maybe I do need to get good and put on better matches.
  9. This is always such an odd topic to read about. I'm the MD at a club in Northern MN. There is a pretty big USPSA culture down in the metro area, but up where I am we're the only club, and besides the "points series" match that I host in our state, I don't think I've had more than 20 shooters at a single match in the past 5 years. I'm typically more concerned about breaking even on materials than I am on running out of space.
  10. I don't think it would hurt anything. If you're shooting both in CO, then it will show as duplicate scores, and I am pretty sure it keeps the highest one. If you are concerned, could always do the shield in Open.
  11. "IPSC Shot Timer" is the one I have.
  12. Not that I'm much good at training, but I like to use a shot timer app on my phone when dry firing. I figure it's fine for par times and whatnot. I put in ear buds and don't have to bother anyone with the noise.
  13. I had brought mine from high 5's to low 3's over the course of one year, but then I tested again this summer and it spiked to 7.3 I believe. I have been diligent about using d-lead soap any time I reload or handle my firearm at home. Though I know of a couple range days where I forgot my d-lead wipes, and there were also a couple days I was at an indoor range. I'd hate to think a couple slip ups would spike my levels that much, but it's all I can think of since I'm good about hygiene while at home.

    Rule ?

I must say, though, conceptually I love the idea of the story-based scenarios. It essentially lets you role-play being an action hero. For a small group of friends I ran a Shadowrun mission match a number of years ago. Had significant amounts of storytelling between the stages to set up the "action". It was quite a bit of fun. Maybe that's what we're all forgetting: IDPA is for LARPers. (and that's not an insult!)
  15. Brassing used to be a big thing at my club when I started shooting (IDPA). As time has gone on, and as I've taken to running USPSA matches there, I heavily discourage brassing during the match. If you want to hunt around for it between shooters, whatever, but I would rather folks focus on resetting and keeping things moving. Anyone that wants their brass can pick it up after teardown. If no one wants it, I'll do it and add it to my stash.
  16. Our club used to be affiliated, but then it lapsed when the only person at our club that was a certified SO left shooting. So now to get reaffiliated we need to get someone certified, which is a decent hassle/expense for essentially no value. Since there isn't anyone in our area that travels around to level 2+ matches, there's really no point/value. Whereas USPSA is easier and offers more value to be affiliated.
  17. Would that get in the way of the optic mount when taking it apart? Could possibly drill and tap.
  18. Weekly sounds insane. I put on matches twice a month at my club from May through August. I'm a teacher with summers off, and that still nearly burns me out. But I also don't have much help with stages - so I steal ones from the internet, and tweak when I set up. I would strongly recommend finding as many stage ideas online as you can to build up a library that you can pull from in case you don't have people willing to make stages all the time.
  19. I'm all for gaming stages, but that sounds like an absurd interpretation to me. From my perspective, we could probably turn to the WSB to justify a FTSA call. I typically word my WSB's as "Engage all targets as they become visible from within the fault lines" or some such thing. If target did not become visible, from within the fault lines, could not be engaged. Therefore, FTSA. Or is my logic off?
  20. My lead level saga has been interesting. Never terribly high, but it was increasing so I decided to take steps. I initially tested at 5.1 three years ago. I shoot outdoors and reload quite a bit. Prior to that first test I would wash my hands, but didn't think about ingesting stuff at all. After that first test, I made hand washing a priority. Stopped eating/drinking when reloading, didn't eat at the range. Would wash my hands thoroughly 2-3 times prior to leaving range. 1 year later, I tested out at 5.7! Not a huge increase, still not a large number, but I still found it troubling. I then switched to using D-Lead wipes and soap. Use a couple wipes at the range, plus wash hands. Wash my hands 2-3 times with the soap when reloading or working with related things at home. After one year of that, my BLL test showed 3.7. TL;DR - the D-Lead stuff works really well.
  21. I've lucked out in finding MG bullets in stock twice in the past 6 months. Just took a couple weeks of checking regularly. It seems that I've seen new stock in the mornings both times.
  22. I despise smoking, but I value the ability to choose more. That said, if someone wants to do well, I think it's ridiculous that they would smoke.
