  1. Most teachers go way, way too fast for the beginners. Makes them feel superior or something.
  2. And back to ammo deals... Post your latest purchase and price here.
  3. Sounds good but I have a bad back. Once fired is fine for pistol and a brass catcher on my rifles. Still going to buy factory ammo once in a while. Have a class coming up that only allows new factory ammo, certain meets, rimfire, hunting, subsonics, etc.
  4. Farenheit 451 is the book I picked for speedreading class. Notice how many “modern” ideas like flatscreens and interactive media it has? Bradbury was a genius. Sometimes when I read E. L. Doctorow it feels like I am reading Bradbury, style-wise at least. Tom Robbins is always entertaining. Still Life w/ Woodpecker is classic Life of Pi by Martel is amazing Barbara Kingsolver is a great writer. Poisonwood Bible is a must read. Kurt Vonnegut’s string of hits, Heller’s Catch 22, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Thompson (after Keroac’s On the Road) are great for thinking out-of-the-box-type stuff. A very good comedy is A Confederacy of Dunces by O’Toole. Paranahansa Yogananda’s Autobiography of a Yogi is interesting. The whole Story of Philosophy by Will Durant is core. Joseph Campbell’s Hero with a Thousand Faces and his monomyth theory is totally important reading. Speer’s Rise and Fall if the 3rd Reich is a good one Gore Vidal is usually worth reading. Lincoln, Julian, Burr. Anything by Steinbeck. John Irving is usually good. Cider House Rules, A Prayer for Owen Meany, Garp. The Milagro Beanfield Trilogy by John Nichols is worthwhile reading. Charriere’s Papillion is a good one. The book is better than the movie, as usual. All of Charkes Bukowski’s stuff is amazing. P. J. ORourke is a damn good writer. Parliament of Whores and his magazine articles are the best. Musashi’s Book of Five Rings, this you must know. Gibran’s The Prophet on my shelf always catches the eyes of the ladies. Read a few pages of that over a glass of wine and see what happens. Everyone should read Homer’s Illiad and Oddyssey. It basically sets up all modern storytelling. (see J. Campbell) Any biography or autobiography of anyone that ever interested you will be a good read because you already want to know about them.
  5. I picked up a Dillon RL550B and started putting a reloading bench together, so now I am looking at brass prices too. Lol.
  6. Just looking through my Kindle for the last year or so and these are the ones I liked: Texas Ranger series by Elmer Kelton. Shark Infested Custard and Cockfight, by Charles Willeford Perfidia by James Elroy Neal Stephenson’s Mongoliad and Diamond Cycle Two Years Before The Mast by Henry Dana Seven Years of a Sailor’s Life, George Edward Clarke Under Sail, Felix Reisenberg The Flashman series by MacDonald The Berlin Noir series and all the Bernie Gunther novels by Phillip Kerr The Hornblower series by C.S. Forester The Aubrey Maturin series by Patrick O’Brian The Pentagon’s Brain by Annie Jacobsen The Jack Reacher series by Lee Child The Harder They Come by T.C. Boyle Saving Capitalism by Robert Reich The Peripheral by William Gibson (anything by him) Phillip K. Dick, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep The Hardwired series by Walter Jon Williams Obama’s Wars by Bob Woodward Andrew’s Brain by E.L. Doctorow Flash Boys, Michael Lewis, also Liar’s Poker, The Big Short Stephen Ambrose, Nothing like it in the World The Living and the Dead by Paul Hendrickson Leon Pannetta, Worthy Fights Lawrence Block, Hit Me, and some others Horseman Pass By, Larry McMurtry Isaac Asimov, I Robot series Cormac McCarthy, the Border Trilogy Nexus Trilogy, Raam Namez Jo Nesbo, Cockroaches and The Bat Level Zero Heroes, Golembesky, et al. Darryl Poniscan, The Last Detail and The Last Flag Flying Robert Louis Stephenson, Treasure Island and The Red Arrow Rafael Sabbatini, Captain Blood and The Sea Hawk Michael Connelly’s Harry Bosch series (only the first two so far) And a bunch of others that were not worth mentioning.

    no guns

When life gives me lemons, I re-arm. Lol
  8. Stalled out on this untill I can find a teenager who can fix my laptop.
  9. Don’t use this thread to promote sleazy pron. Unless it is gun pron.

    no guns

Hate having my main gun and my backup at the shop at the same time, and a meet coming up in two days.
  11. The author is asking to reconsider power factor in order to integrate shooters from military and law enforcement. If you don’t read and understand the article, your arguments will not be valid, germane, or pertinent.
  12. Assuming you are physically fit, the rest is mental: some have it, some don’t.
  13. After trying to run a cleaning patch through the barrel with the can attached, I have rethought the idea and am leaning more towards the permanently attached shroud with room for a can to thread on inside it. That way, the gun still has an overall length forward of the recever of less than 20” with can attached, but retains the ability to remove the can and stay legal w/o the tax stamp for sbr. Not a cheap solution, but not an 8 mo. wait either.
  14. If the idea of power factor can be seen as a handicapping system to mitigate competitive advantage, which is an effort to level the field and promote fairness, then any modification to improve the system is a benefit to the promotion of fair play. Assuming that most current participants and any potential future participants would also desire the same fair chance, then adjusting the power factor to accomodate modern calibers and loads used in popular personal defence arms would be a benefit to the sport. Given the advances in technology, perhaps an overall look at each individual firearm’s total capacity, such as caliber, bullet weight, velocity, magazine capacity, and performance enhancements such as optics, porting, etc. could be summed up in an individual handicap number that is specific to that weapon and applied to the score of each round shot with it. Much like the handicap of a golfer that is set for each player and follows him around. That way, all you .40 cal guys can shoot your prize ponys all you want and the duty gun guys can run what they brung and everyone feels like they are gettin a fair shake.
  15. You are right, Krag: It is an interesting article. Elsewhere in the article, Hopkins mentions the goal of reaching out to other shooting organizations and soliciting more participation from government and law enforcement shooters. Perhaps this is part of the reason to reconsider power factor, since the 9mm is what most defence arms use. The .40 guns are cool and all, but they are really about gaming the existing pf system for advantage, instead of safely practicing and competing with defence-type arms and scenarios.
  16. Finding a good deal on a gun, ammo, whatever else. It would be nice to have a topic thread on good deals so members could share any good deals that they happen to find.
  17. Brownell’s has Browning 9mm 5 boxes of 100 for $89.95 with code and another 20% off mfg coupon. That’s $71.96 and possibly free shipping, depending on your order. Works out to about 14 1/2 cents per rd. Saw the ad on gun dot deals.
  18. Amazon has a few, but not for free. These days, I prefer Kindle to paper anyway.
  19. My question is about barrel tempering.
  20. My experience ordering from Blue Target Firearms sucks. They waited 3 weeks to admit that they backordered the magazines even though they showed as in stock on the website. I have asked for a refund. I don’t expect the truth to be forthcoming from Blue Target Firearms. I apologize if anyone else here ordered from them based on my info.
  21. I have 2 uncle mike’s double stack, double mag pouches from amazon that were 16 bucks each mounted to safariland clips. Had to drill one hole each. Cheap and work great for RIA 9mm/para/R9 double stack mags.
  22. Update: It is the 22nd and I have not seen the mags yet. Even if they show up, I would not do any more business with Blue Target Firearms.
  23. I’m new myself, and I can tell you that your local range probably has a few classes beyond concealed carry like defensive handgun 1 & 2 that will get you up to speed with basic gun handling, drawing, grip, and magazine changes and will totally pay off at the meets. Read Ben Stoeger’s book and do the dry fire drills. Mark your brass so the brass hounds at the meets can’t claim it. Keep a gear checklist and use it before leaving home and before going home. Earplugs and electric muffs work best. Always bring spare batteries: they wear our faster around other shooters. As far as guns go, run whatcha brung for awhile until you get a better idea of what you need/want.
