  1. Looking for experiences with the Hogue Big But with just the top finger groove? I like the way the top groove lock my grip in, but the other ones never seem to fit right. I went to a no groove big but and like it, but I am finding occasions where my grip is off and accuracy suffers. I have begun shooting ICORE with my 627. I really noticed to when I bought and started shooting a 625. With the finger groove monogrip that came on it I was very accurate…she I paid attention. When I changed it to the no groove big but my results suffered. Not really interested in custom fit grips, but would like to hear peoples experiences with the top groove only grips.

I was thinking this one where the previous owner went the extra step to tri-top the slide.

You'd want an extra two magazines and mag pouches for USPSA but it's otherwise ready to run. It's perfect for IDPA ESP as is.

Window shopping for the perfect gun can be fun but it doesn't change your scores. It's also important to get some regular match time under your belt before you drop a lot of money on gear. Don't outsource your preferences to other people's opinions; experiment yourself and see if changes actually have an impact on your own performance.

It was tri-topped from STI. I never ran it in Single Stack because I lost one of my mags. I was shooting Limited with my STI Edge at the time. Now I’m punishing myself in Revolver.

My journey was over 20 years....owning lots of machines, owning machines one for large primer and one for small. Do this, do that...

At the last cross road, I sold a spare 550 and a Square deal. Purchased a dedicated 1050 in 9mm. IT's been fun. I am now spoiled my the 1050 and want to go .40 full time. My loading partner Jack Russell is going to have to kick in and buy dad a used 1050 for .40

My first press was a used RCBS Junior 39 years ago, loading 9mm for pistol and .243 and 6mm for rifle, I still have it. In the 90s I got hooked on Skeet and ended up with 4 MECs for 12, 20, 28 and .410. At this point I really like the 650, and caliber changes aren’t bad. I’ve come a long way from the RCBS and hand priming...

Do you load any rifle?  I kept mine for loading rifle rounds. My Rifle loads vary by rifle bullet type etc and I usually have to small batch each load to make range boxes and test.

I would hold onto it because you will only get a 3-400 for it with all the conversions. If you do load or have any plans to load rifle Keep it and sell of your conversion kits.

No plans to load rifle. It really comes down to having a machine I don’t need, or some cash to reinvest elsewhere. I appreciate your thoughts.

  5. I began  several years ago with the RL 550 loading 9mm, and eventually added 38 Special, .40 S&W, and recently 38 Short Colt. I bought a new 650 with a case feeder in the last year in .40 and just finished getting conversions to the other rounds I load. I tend to load in bulk runs so I never run low. With Dillon’s excellent support I am wondering why keep the 550. Any opinions?

  6. Revolver (38 Special) shooters have squid plroblems with light loads. Small amount of powder in a large case gets up against bullet a long way from primer. Happened to me once. Evident by unburned powder.

As it has been said many times before all S&W's are your starter kit, short block if you will, to build on.

Most will get you started just fine.

Then you'll want to up grade it.

    trigger work

    Smooth it out

    etc etc etc

Been there before.  This is my IDPA revolver. Old Arkansas Department of Corrections gun. $299, but in good shape. Off to the local gunsmith and $350 dollars later I had a fantastic competition gun.

Shot one for years and honestly for 90% of the matches I shoot it's great.

Couple of the sectional type matches with a few 50 yd. shots the longer sight radius is nice

    But

Honestly not necessary for as few of those as we come across.

If the price is right and it's tight. It would be a great revo to work with!

Thanks. It’s a smaller shop that I have done business with an I feel they will deal. I’ve given it a reasonable look and it seems tight and unmodified with a low round count. Time to give it a closer inspection.
