  1. Pre-COVID I was always chasing the absolute cheapest combination of powder/bullet I could find. That lead me to big jugs of Titegroup and various coated bullets (whichever had the best sale, discount, free shipping, etc, etc). Ultimately I ditched the coated bullets for plated due to smoke issues. Outdoors it's generally manageable, but indoors it's definitely a factor.
  2. I think the point is that the 'lapsed' members are still participating in the activity. They likely feel that 'voting' and waiting for change to happen is a fool's errand, so they take a more drastic approach and impact the revenue stream. Perhaps loosely analogous to the people I know who will drink a Bud Light if you offer them one at a party, but they'll no longer purchase them. If situations change (for both organizations) the revenue stream could pick up again.
  3. I'm not that worried, but seeing something other than 'perfect' in my blood results stuck in my brain a bit. It made me realize that I could be more diligent, so I'll take some measured steps and see if I can drop things a bit.
  4. And I just ordered D-lead body wash/shampoo, wipes, and hand soap. I think the biggest contributor is the indoor action matches 2x/month. Between setup, shooting, and cleanup I'm there at least 5 hours, so if the ventilation is less than optimal I think I'm getting greater exposure. I then have a 50 minute ride home where I immediately shower, but not with d-lead. I switched from coated bullets to plated about 2 years ago because I didn't like the smoke. As soon as the wipes come in I'm going to wipe down all of my pistols. I presume that my regular cleaning routing with Hoppe's would be sufficient, but I'll add a wipedown with the wipes after every time I shoot.
  5. Glad I found this thread. I was getting bloodwork for a physical recently and on a whim I asked my doctor to add in a test for lead and it came back at 9.1. The nurse who called me with the results said everything else was perfect but she wanted me to go to a Hematologist to talk about next steps for the high lead results. She said 'normal' was below 3.5 so I should make an appointment as soon as possible. I'm one of those who isn't the most diligent about washing with d-lead soap after touching brass, and the indoor range where I've been doing action shooting doesn't have the best ventilation, so I think I'll start with addressing those first before seeing a specialist. The internet says "For reducing blood lead levels, vitamin C, vitamin E, thiamine (B1), folate (B9) and iron have the strongest and most consistent blood lead links" so I may start taking those for a few months to see how things go.
  6. Thank you VERY much for that @JWBaldree! Bunch of stuff I hadn't thought of.
  7. Now that ammo prices are 'less stupid' and people are out of hiding from COVID, it seems that it's very difficult to get into USPSA/action shooting matches in the area. Most matches are full within a day (or hours) of registration opening, and none of them are particularly close to where I live (typically 45 minutes away). I'm a member of an indoor club that is physically setup well for USPSA/action shooting matches (and many years ago they ran IDPA matches) and I've previously seen some of our members shooting matches at other clubs, so I thought it would be great if we could start doing matches here. With that in mind, is there any general framework available detailing how a club typically gets things started? It seems the 'simple' way is to setup some basic stages and once a month (or more) get some members together and run through them, but ideally I'd like to setup something more formal that I can run by the board (it's a private club) and work towards being an official/sanctioned club. I know of a few members who are USPSA/GSSF members and NRA RSO certified, so we should have a decent crew to start with, but I want to be as organized as possible so people keep coming back. We already have target stands, some barrels, and timers, but I'd need to build some walls, buy targets, tape, wood for framing, and spray paint. We don't have any tablets, so scoring would have to be done manually. Suggestions are welcome. Thanks.
  8. Are you planning to be a competition shooter or are you just working to be able to shoot the G17 well? If the focus is shooting it well then I agree with the folks who say "do what works well for you". I have a friend who's a retired LEO and he has a grip similar to the one you describe. He'd never be a competition shooter, but he keeps everything center mass on a Q target from 0 - 25 yards, so he's plenty effective from a self-defense perspective.
  9. Where did you get them for $60/1000?
  10. Riveting is considered a "permanent" adjustment.
  11. That's very strange. Has to be a manufacturing defect of some kind. I've seen people do very stupid things with Glock's and they always seem to keep on going, so for a simple drop to cause that much damage there has to be something else going on. Is it possible it was sold to you as "new" but was really a trade in from someone who broke it?
  12. I haven't used that powder, but I've had good success with many thousands of rounds through a lock n Load. What kind of differences are you seeing in powder weights? IMO the tightness of the knob shouldn't be an issue. As long as the arms are connected you should get full range of motion for the arms. In fact, if the know is too tight it could make the action slow and get stuck in the drop position. Do you have the powder baffle inserted in the drop tube? That definitely helps keep things consistent. Maybe try taking it apart again and giving it a good cleaning and then finish with a dry lube? Could be some residual cleaning compounds gunking things up.
  13. I've shot several thousand 124 gr Xtreme with no issues. I typically use Win 231 powder (or Titegroup when I can't find Win) and both seem to work well with Xtreme for me out of a Glock 17, EAA Witness, a PCC and a small carry gun. They seemed to have bullets available when i needed them during the pandemic when other dealers were out of stock, so I never stopped using them. I only but 1k or 2k at a time, but consistency between batches always seemed pretty close. I might check the others mentioned in this thread if there's a good enough $$$ saving, but otherwise I'd have no issues sticking with Xtreme.
  14. Great thread. I'm going to check my insurance to see if there's any coverage for for hearing protection...
  15. Start with your regular load and see how it works. If you're already on the "hot" side with your load then start a little lighter and work back up, but I haven't noticed a difference.
  16. This is a discussion forum, right? Generally speaking I don't think people are really that concerned with what other people do/don't do. If you tumbled brass only on Tuesdays and used precisely 1/2 cup of lemi-shine in your pre wash then that's all you. When you provide a source/reasoning to "justify" doing something, then I think it opens things up to discussion. For example, if someone says "I don't do X because of Y", it essentially sets Y up for review. If there's counterpoint that debunks Y and someone then follows with "Well I don't care about Y, I don't do X anyway", then discussion would naturally continue. IMO there's no need to justify/defend the decision to NOT tumble live brass. You do you. Not sure I understand why you're deflecting/distracting with the attack on the NRA...
  17. Can you just keep unscrewing the die while the bushing is in the press? That's what i do...
  18. Thanks for linking. I shared it several times.
  19. On their shipping info page they show "We only allow shipping within CANADA. No international orders."
  20. On a reddit forum there was a discussion about this. The original posting was taken down due to a copyright challenge, but there's a link to a "mod" that supposedly has all of the original parts as well: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3207921 I've never done this project so I have no idea if everything is there, so you'll have to figure it out.
  21. I wanted to try them out so I ordered 1000 135gr 9mm from them last year. Many were like in the pictures above and consistency was garbage. My Glock and one other pistol would run them but the rest hated them.
  22. I agree that it makes sense to stick with one powder. However I do think it's valuable (when times are good and powder plentiful) to try out s few different ones just in case a great deal comes along where you can get a good haul of your 2nd favorite powder really cheap. I stay connected to local forums and look at the bulletin boards at the ranges and buy up supplies from people who are "getting rid of" what they have. I've picked up pounds of powder and thousands of bullets for pennies on the dollar that way. As for starting out, I initially went with a Hornady lock and Load Progressive. I was only loading 9mm, 38 Special, and .45acp, so I went slowly and carefully. I picked up a single stage Lyman press when I started loading .308.
