Thanks everyone for the suggestions.
I got it removed, but it was a bear. Compressing the spring and yanking back and forth seemed to finally allow it to slip past the block on the barrel. Getting it back in was another story. This will probably seem obvious to everyone else, but in case it helps the next guy...
the problem was that I was sliding the guide rod and spring all the way in BEFORE trying to lift up on the guide rod/spring, basically binding the spring and rod against the front bushing and binding the back of the guide rod on the barrel block. I finally tried lifting the front end up WHILE sliding it in, before it could bind, and it slipped right in. Duh....
After fighting with this thing for 2 days, I’m going to go shoot several hundred rounds through it before I try stripping it again, but hopefully that technique will work again, and maybe this will help somebody else down the road.
It is a beautiful pistol by the way, but our relationship did not start on the right foot.
thanks agsin for for the help.
