  1. Harmon, I think you have sensitive ears I shoot longshot and don't find it any louder than any other load I have used in the past
  2. Steve, maybe check your chamber dimension and compare it to other 38 super shooters and see what you come up with. If the dimension is larger the case will expand more. I should check my STI and see what mine is for a comparison. I have never had a split case when using new Starline brass. I use the Dillon Rapid Polish and tumble my brass each time before reloading. Starline is a bit tougher to reload I find when resizing but never sticky.
  3. I know this may be a bit too late to reply to but this is what I use for a load. My gun: STI 38 SUPER TRUBORE 38 super Starline Brass 8.6 grains Longshot 115 MG CMJ Winchester small pistol magnum primer My PF is 175 (last match chrono result in October) Dot movement can be seen as up and down within the sight glass within the confines of my cmore. It's a bit hot with slight primer crater but does not flatten the primer. Fairly accurate load but loading any more powder and the velocity stays about the same then starts to drop off.
  4. I tried Longshot here awhile ago, 10.0 grains with 115 MG cmj with a PF of 171, Trubore, 38 super Starline+p brass, WSPM primers. Any increase over that powder charge made the load slower so this powder seems to peak then sputter, unburnt powder I assume. I am going to try a bit lighter of a load and see what happens as per what I have been reading here and there on this forum.
  5. I have tried some of your loads listed here. With mixed results of course. I find that loading it to 9.1 grains of 7625 gives me better hits. I could shoot over sandbags but I think the real test is getting out there with the rest of the gang while practising. I used mixed brass, winchester small pistol magnum primer, 115 gr MG fmj, oal 1.255 I just chrono'ed the same load yesterday morning using Starline and Remington NP and found that the velocities were a bit higher with NP. About 30 fps. When it warmed up later in the day, about 10 degrees celcius, the loads were closer together velocity wise anway. About 13 fps difference higher with NP. The Starline loads remained about the same. Just what I have been seeing here anyway. Starline PF 175.9 REM NP PF 177.5
  6. Thanks for the info. Who is Angus? Just curious.
  7. Has anyone used this brass? Is it worth the extra cost for reloading in comparison to other brass makes? Pricey for sure but just wondering and if anyone has comparisons to other brass brands I would appreciate any comments. Wouldn't want to lose too much of it, especially shooting IPSC that's for sure if I did buy any . TIA.
  8. I have loaded a lot, well for me it is (15,000 rounds or more)of VV N350 rounds (40 S&W) with a Square Deal B press. No worries if your planning on using that gunpowder/press combo.
  9. Looking for pros and cons about this gun in 38 super. I don't have any interest in the 9 major. Any updated load information would be appreciated as well. Thanks.
  10. Hi, thanks for the reply, all help and tips appreciated. I changed out my grip as well, I have one of those fancy colored grips now. Ugly looking, but not hard to spot in a safety area. Just shot a double qualifier up here on the weekend and didn't have any problems. One fellow on our squad had what I thought was a similar problem but I think it turned out to be something else in the end. Hammer/sear trouble I believe. Worn parts or crud. I didn't get a chance to talk to him later about it but I will pass your message about the loose grip on to him. Thanks again.
  11. You could try jacketed bullets such as Montana Gold or Zero. They are a cheaper alternative to buying Factory bullets. I have used both in 40, 180 gr cmj with MG, exposed lead back with Zero. Para(P16-40 Limited SS) and STI Executive as of late as I have sold the Para. No feeding problems whatsoever as long as the gun is cleaned on a regular basis. I can check my OAL but then again what may run good in mine might not necessarily run good in yours. My loads are 180 pf. There is a fellow shooter friend of mine that has been shooting lead loads out of his new P16-40 and had some problems with it and when he shoot's my Montana Gold loads his problems disappear. Some guy's I know shoot lead exclusively and never seem to have much trouble so I guess it's a matter of preference and price consideration.
  12. My CR Speed belt is about 4 inches over my waist size. I have 2, shoot open and stock so I wear them both differently. Stock, usually attach in front, Open usually, well have to attach in the backside so the mags are out front of me. I have the usual problem at my age, dunlop disease altho I did lose a lot of weight this past winter, had a job that had me doing about 25 kilometers a day walking, lots of stairs, etc. Lost a few inches but am gaining it back sighhhh. Dunlop disease is back lol. Need to run and gun more too.
  13. Ok, Fired a couple hundred rounds out of my gun this afternoon and had no problems whatsoever. Tried white knuckle grip, hard grip, shot strong hand, light grip, whatever, gun still functioned ok. Shot the gun fast, slow, double taps. made a few quick mag changes and kept firing. My friend thinks that the sharpie (wide felt pen actually) residue may have built up enough on the breechface around the firing pin hole and some of the gunk was getting into the firing pin hole itself. After shooting all those rounds there was a real buildup that we could both see. I have been using a different felt pen lately marking my cases. The one I usually use has been "lost" and just found it today actually. I have never had any problems using that one as it doesn't seem to leave a really bright mark on the case unlike this other one I had been using. Took the gun completely apart after and checked out the rest of the parts, nothing too worn out yet. All my gun parts(innards) are stock STI except for an ejector and extractor which were replaced at a match last summer. Not too sure if they were STI as a friend loaned(sold) me some parts and got me back in the shoot. Other than that my friend while watching me shoot said most all my rounds were ejecting into one spot and didn't think I had a load issue. I chrono'ed 20 rounds, all within reasonable variances. My power factor was fairly high today(179), not too warm this afternoon, but the gunpowder may be temperature sensitive. My friend shoots the same load through his STI Trubor so he made the comment about the gunpowder sensitivity. The pf is usually lower when it warms up here(175), thereabouts. If I have any problems in the future I will post the details. Thanks for all the suggestions and advice folks. It's very much appreciated.
  14. Thanks for the replies. I don't have a *long* firing pin. I can always order one. I guess some gun shops like to push certain primers as well but they just recommended I try the federal rifle primer. I have used the regular winchester small pistol primers as well and had no problems. I just put the old firing pin and spring back in and I will be trying it out today. I have a friend who has some spare parts so I will be there today so we can try and figure out what the problem is. If I recall when I cleaned my gun the last time I may have put some oil in with the firing pin. May have caused the problem. It has been assembled dry this time. I will let you know what happens later today. Thanks again to all for your help and advice.
  15. Ok, stripped the gun down, pulled firing pin and spring out. Both are intact but will change them out anyway just in case. Checked for debris in the firing pin hole, nothing there. I had run the pencil in the barrel check as well yesterday after finishing the match, pops it out pretty high. I forget to mention I use a felt pen to mark my headstamps. Just for matches, not so much for practise. Not sure if that would cause a problem but have cleaned that up as well. I also pulled the extractor, now there was some crud built up just behind the lip and have cleaned that all up. One of the more experienced open shooters did mention to me about primer crud getting back into the firing pin hole and said it could be a possibility. I am going to try some federal rifle primers and see what happens if all this cleaning and fp and spring replacement doesn't clear up the problem. I also checked the hammer movement back and forth but it seems smooth, no bumps or should say didn't notice anything catching. I also rechecked my powder throws, nothing out of the ordinary there + - .1 of a grain. I use a Dillon 550B. Thanks for all the replies, it's appreciated.
  16. scews are too large anyway to fit the sti mount, you would have to retap the holes
  17. Ok, just shot a match yesterday and was having a problem. I was having a hammer fall after pulling the trigger but firing pin is not hitting the primer. It was not happening all the time but it was happening at least 2-3 times per stage while shooting stages that required mag changes. I am using brand new Winchester brass, 115 gr MG CMJ, 9.4 grains SP85 powder, .377 crimp, OAL 1.26,Win small pistol magnum primer. Same thing was happening using old brass as well in practise. Thought maybe some of the rounds might be bulged out too much causing the problem with the older brass. I use a Dillon case gauge checker on every round, new or otherwise. I saved all the ejected rounds with the fired brass, had a look at them after and there is no primer hit at all on the unfired rounds. The fired cases had good hits and no pressure signs that would really flatten the primers. I replaced the recoil master with a new one and on one stage that I needed only 1 mag no problem but as soon as I shot another stage requiring a mag change the problem reoccured. Gun was cleaned thoroughly a few weeks ago. Mags are fairly new but have never changed the springs. They are 140's blocked for 10 rounds. I have had the mags for 18 months. Maybe put 12,000 rounds through the gun so far. There is also varying flash intensity through the comp. This was an indoor match so some of the guys made the comment. Any ideas? Thanks.
  18. It only fits the three screw mount not the 5 that STI makes for the competitor model
  19. This has nothing to do with an open barrel but from past experience with the power factor drop using the same powder load you may want to take a really good look inside your barrel and see if there is a ring around the inside. You may have possibly had a squib pushed through your barrel or it may be cracked. Happened on my Para last year. Also if your noticing more fouling in the gun it is because gases are escaping through the crack in the barrel. It was cracked around one of the lugs on mine. Just a thought but might be worth checking into. I was new to this kind of failure and didn't notice it until I shot a match and was stopped by an RO, he said my gun was cycling in slow motion at the time. Changed out parts from a spare gun and finished the match and had the gun fixed soon afterwards.
  20. Current IPSC rules state that you can't make any modifications to a gun in production division. Appendix E, Production Division, 21. Application of grip tape is allowed however (24)
  21. Which direction do you drive it out? Let's say with the gun on it's side with ejection port up. Left or right? Just for clarification if someone ask's me. Thanks.
  22. I can't say I slap my trigger at all either dry or live firing. I used to shoot a lot of 22 bullseye previous to IPSC so maybe that has helped me more than anything. I guess for some folks they may need to concentrate more on the trigger set? It comes natural to me.
  23. I had one and the buzzer crapped out on it after a few months of weekly use. Sent it back and CED is sending me a new one. Can't beat that for customer service.
