  1. I've been working on my presentation. I recorded this video of some dry fire practice. This is as "fast" as I can go without feeling rushed and sloppy. Would love to hear some feedback. Be brutally honest please.

I'm trying to bridge a traditional tactical draw with a faster stroke but still avoiding anything bad like muzzling myself or fingering the trigger too soon in the draw, etc.

I am firing as soon as I got good sight picture and I'm on target. Using a scaled down version of a standard USPSA target.

IMPORTANT NOTE... my firearm has no magazine. Chamber checked several times. I have no ammo or magazines in the room where I am practicing.

  2. When people shoot with both eyes open on irons is it the same as when you shoot both eyes open with a red dot? I can shoot both eyes open with a red dot perfectly fine, but when doing it with irons my weak eye is about half closed.  If I leave it all the way open I can't see my rear sight, but with half closed everything is in perfect focus.  I wasn't even really sure it was open until I covered my dominant eye to see what I could with my weak eye!  Anyone else Experience this?
What you describe with irons is the same for me. Open both eyes and the rear sight practically disappears. The scotch tape on the glasses on the weak does work well for me. I can see under, over and to either side of the tape but it blocks my view of the sights when aiming so I don't have to squint.

I've been trying to wean my way off the tape in dry fire. I can get a decent sight picture on the front FO but that rear sight is pretty damn blurring. It may be good enough for closer speed shooting but for anything that requires accuracy, I will have to squint that one eye.

I travel a lot and I never go anywhere without my camera. Thought I'd share some photos I've taken if that's OK.

  4. I will jump in here as someone that wants to shoot USPSA but hasn't. Maybe give you my perspective that could be why others haven't taken the plunge.

Probably the best way to put it is cold feet. At least for me.

I am a relatively new gun owner. I bought my first handgun back in Feb of 2017. I shot a gun for the 1st time just 4 months before that. I now own 4 handguns and an AR-15.

For me, it's not a matter of just owning guns. I love to shoot them. My wife and I hit the range almost every week. Have since before buying the first gun.

We've taken multiple training classes from basic safety to defensive tactical classes. I dry fire practice and practice drawing, acquiring sight picture, reloads on the move, etc. In my backyard with a dry gun or snap caps.

I read a lot about USPSA on this board and other places. I've watched countless videos of matches. I've read the rules multiple times and I may not know them by heart but I understand them for the most part.

I've become a pretty proficient shooter standing still and shooting a paper that doesn't move. I'm safe at handling my weapon. I can draw pretty well, reload and handle malfunctions. No expert by any stretch of the imagination but I know I can run a stage without being a danger to anyone.

I'm not afraid of competition. I'm a competitive person. I played baseball all my life, even into adulthood. I'm basically saying I'm not shy.

I guess even with all this practice and preparation, I am still so hesitant about taking that next step and entering a match. It also doesn't help that I live in Los Angeles, not the most pro-gun place, and don't know anyone that shoots USPSA. The couple of people that I know that own guns probably haven't shot them in a decade.

Long story short, I'm sure I'm not the only noob that wants to shoot USPSA but are too intimidated to start.

Would love to hear from any local guys out here in LaLa Land, especially up in the San Fernando Valley area that shoot USPSA. Maybe I can come out and hang out at a match and meet some of you. Get to see one in person first and then try my hand at one.

  5. It's obviously been several months since I made this post. I do appreciate the continued help and replies. It's all still pertinent advice for me as I continue to actively practice my shooting.

Although I did take about a 2 month break due to some travel, I am back to hitting the range weekly. I have definitely improved since making this post. I am more comfortable shooting at longer distances and can get tighter groupings with fewer fliers.

I'm going to start hitting an outdoor range where I can shoot at great distances and also where I can practice transitioning targets. I do this I dry fire but more difficult to do at the indoor range.

  6. Just got back from the range. I focused on shooting at 20 yards. It's the furthest I can shoot in this range. I shot 100 rounds. Concentrated on all the tips you guys gave me.

Making sure front sight is in focus. Worked on precision... aiming small and keeping my aim constant through a string. Tight grip. No limp wrist.

Result... much better. I had a few flyers but most of my strings were tight.

Target posted is my last 25 rounds. I was shooting 5 shot strings. Cadence was about a second, maybe two per round.

I felt much more relaxed today. I thinker that helped.

    Is this decent shooting?

It's hard for me to judge. I am better than most of the folks I see at the range but they could all suck. LOL

BTW, This was shot with 115g S&B new ammo.

    That's a quarter for scale. f7a626d47d5ee187c408e142e05de092.jpg

Still shooting offhand I bet. I would guess its the mental aspect of kinda psyching yourself out on how far away the target is. Gotta remember that any error at shorter distances is magnified the further away the target.

Just spend more time on it, and even move the target further back. I felt that once I discovered that I could hit targets well over 50yds away, shooting at 20yds became much less intimidating, etc.

I think you're right. I know I instantly get in my head when I move the target back to end of the range. I like your idea of trying to shoot further distances. I am gonna try a different range. Outdoor with steal targets. The indoor maxes out at 20 yards. My thought is shooting at the outdoor with all the steal targets already staged at different distances is a more relaxed setting. Plus, just the different venue may help me get out of my head. Gonna see if I can make it out there next weekend.

Did you notice any issues with my grip in the video?

  8. Could be the ammo?   What are you using?

Eyesight?   Can you see the front sight and the target clearly?

    Is this freestyle?    or benched?
Hmm... I definitely have not ruled out ammo. Today I was shooting new S&B 115g brass FMJ. I also shoot Blazer Brass in 115g and 124g FMJ.

My eye sight is great. I see better than 20/20. Had LASIK about a year ago.

And this is all freestyle. Traditional grip. Isosceles stance although I do stand with my right foot slightly behind left.

Here is a video of me shooting. This was taken a couple of months ago. My grip may have changed a little since this was shot but not much. Unfortunately, you can't see the left hand from this angle. Hoping it's still helpful. Not sure if you see any iasues.

  9. Just what the titles says. Need help. Little bit of background.

I shot a gun for the 1st time about 14 months ago. I got my 1st pistol in March. I've been hitting the range consistently since then. I go at least once a week. More in the last month.

I have 2 pistols now, SP-01 and 1911 Loaded Target, both in 9mm. I shoot exclusively at paper, in an indoor range. I have been focusing on increasing the distance to target over time. I'm pretty darn good at up to 12 yards. Pretty tight groups. Within an inch when I am focused and not tired.

The problem is that once I push the target out beyond that, I got sloppy. I just don't get it.

What I mean by sloppy is my groupings are like 6 inches apart. All around the bullseye. All my shots still hit all on the 8.5x11 sheet of paper.

Am I being unrealistic? Should I expect to make 1 to 2 inch groups at distances of 15+ yards? What do you think is wrong? Is it just a matter of practicing more at these dustances?

I think its mental. I get a little anxious when I see the target is farther out and I lose my focus on fundamentals. At least it's what I think is happening.

  10. DO NOT buy Dawson's recommended set. The front sight is too tall for the rear they package it with. Ends up shooting low by about 2 inches at 10 yards. They sent me a custom shorter front sight for free. Haven't installed it yet but I am afraid it's gonna be too short. I think it's .120

I have heard good things about the CGW set. It's what I will buy of the new shorter sight doesn't work out.

  11. For sights, get the CGW black rear, FO front sight.

DO NOT get the rear and front sight kit from Dawson. Their front sight is not properly sized to the rear they sent. Its too tall at .150. You will wind up shooting 2 inches too low. They will send you another from sight, but then you are stuck with a tiny front. Something like .120.

This is what happened to me and a couple of others.

Again, go with the CGW set if you want FO.

  12. Guns, ammo, magazines, tools, sight kit with FO, cutters, lighter, punches, screw drivers, batteries, allen wrenches, timer, 9v battery, lube, lead wipes, rain cover, spare gun, safety glasses, ear pro, squib rod, tape gun and mag brush.

What tools do you carry? I am guessing everything you need to fix any possible malfunction?

  13. In the event that what I said above isn't very clear, fired primers are brass and go for the same price as the brass cases at a scrapyard, so don't discard them either.

Admittedly dumb regarding this topic but all the ejected cases I have seen always have the primer in them. I assumed that when you sell your "brass", its the case and the primer. I sounds like it is not. ??

    Raffles
Because it is impossible for the BE Staff to verify that raffles are run fairly, correctly and according to the laws governing them in various locations, we have decided on a 'no raffles' policy. We understand some legitimately good causes may be impacted by this, but felt it was in the best interest of the membership overall.

  15. Oh Lord, send me all the 45-70 brass  !!!

Check prices on some of the less popular calibers on some of the brass sites.

I only currently shoot 9mm. I have gone to the range twice since making this thread and have collected each time.

If I do not end up reloading, maybe I will do some sort of free raffle for forum members. Winner takes all, just pay for shipping.[emoji3]
