  1. I would say this sounds a bit too far fetched, but in this day and age, it might be a possibility. I’m a MD that runs a monthly local. Were someone to make this request of me, without insulting their intelligence, cursing at them, and mocking their pedigree information, the polite answer would be no. They would not get the polite answer! Best thing to do is follow the lead of our BoD. Explain that info is the intellectual property of USPSA and is not to be made public! Tell them to contact the board and await an answer. Problem solved!
  2. OP. If you’re still on the fence here’s a suggestion. I’ve taken Steve’s & JJ’s classes and they were both great. Different but great. As far as bang for the buck you may look into Anderson’s online Mental Management course. I took it a few years ago and doubt much has changed. It was $250 I think but well worth it. Not the hands on, gun handling type of instruction you were referring to but still, well worth the time / money investment. You may only come away with 2-3 things that really help but some of the easiest low hanging fruit to grab. Just a suggestion. Have a great day -PTR
  3. Wow. It’s been 3 weeks already? That’s about the interval here when someone who doesn’t shoot major wants to get rid of it. How would it be significantly beneficial to the sport? What would be accomplished? This generally stems from people who don’t like the different scoring values when they review the the a fantasy division page. I say let’s go for it!! No more major. Then every 3 weeks we can listen to the next argument - Let’s get rid of 171.25 mags and cap everyone at 141.25!!!
  4. Morning gentlemen. Hope everyone is hitting alphas and having a fantastic day. As I was way too impatient to wait I initially picked up a JP-5 SC / off the shelf model. Loved it so much I soon got an identical second for a BU. I went with the SC for a few reasons. I like the smaller diameter hand guard, probably more cost efficient to add weight ( if needed ) than remove any, and by the time you throw on a magwell & a few optics, not to mention 47 rds of ammo, things add up. After running them for a while I decided I wanted to try the JP 3 port vertical comp on one, so I did. Then the testing began. While testing both guns were completely identical except for the comps. Granted the SC horizontal comp is slightly lighter which is the only thing not accounted for here. Used a lot of different loads with N320 / 147 - 124 - 115g ranging in PF from 125 - 135. 70deg block. Also some N340’s w 115’s between 135-145PF. 60deg block. Now, not the most scientific method I know but regardless it went like this. On the lower part of a USPSA target I put a bold horizontal line. Then on both sides working upwards more lines in 1 inch increments. Distance to target was 10 yds. I would mount the first gun with the horizontal port comp. Holding it not softly but not as aggressively/ tight as my freestyle stance I would put the dot on the lower line ( baseline ) and break a shot only trying to take notice of where the dot moved to. This was done 5 times to get an acceptable average. Document results. Then, with the same ammo repeat the process with the other vertical port comp gun. Document & compare. In total I used around 14 different loads using the above combinations. Long story short, the vertical port beat out the horizontal on every load, by a considerable margin. First i used the lighter loads and went up on PF. Starting loads at 125 with the vert comp had a dot rise of about a third of the horizontal. The trend of roughly 2/3 less vert dot movement continued consistently throughout testing. I think the old adage of PCC’s not being able to utilize a comp isn’t applicable to the JP-5 due to the delayed action helping to increase, or at least utilize what gas / pressure there is. Now the disclaimer: this was only done because I was curious and had to know. YMMV as always. As stated there was a slight weight difference in the comps. Enough to make this much difference? You decide. These are the steel challenge variant so the difference may not be as pronounced in a heavier model. There is also the possibility that I was somewhat biased and just wanted the vert to perform better and controlled that gun better. I did try to be as objective as possible while doing this but stranger things have happened. So yes, I will be switching comps on the other gun to the vert port when I have time. I’ve ran them both in matches and for me at least the vert is the one I like. If anyone would like any additional information or clarification regarding this please feel free to PM me and we could make arrangements to discuss. Sorry for long post. -PTR
  5. Morning all. Quick question. Does anyone have any rough data on a steel challenge specific load. No PF floor. All my testing was for USPSA. With the 70 about 129 was the minimum where reliability came into play. Anyone played around with the 80 on the lower PF end or maybe one of the lower blocks? 90-100-120 if I remember right. Thanks in advance and have a great day. -PTR
  6. About 5 years ago I tried a cheap one just to see. It survived about 3 matches before it pooped the bed and laid down. Definitely wasn’t for me. Being totally honest I did not practice with it hardly at all. Had I given it more of a chance perhaps my opinion would be different. But my decision to delete it was based on a few things. First as most have stated here, it’s highly situational. All matches are different but I doubt anyone ever won a match and attributed it to their proficiency with the laser. Also, it’s electronic which means one day it will fail. Probably at the worst possible moment. Then practice time with it. For many of us, practice time is limited and valuable. For me at least, spending practice time working on a skill that “might” be used one or two rounds in the next 3-4 matches simply wasn’t worth it. Still all things considered, they are very affordable. Only way to know for sure is bite the bullet and see.
  7. It’s tough for anyone to really understand precisely what happened as we didn’t witness the events unfold in real time. One extreme could be the RO had a God complex. The other could be he was simply trying to be helpful but wound up going overboard. Either one is not good. For example. You said in one position you had a mandatory 3 targets to engage but could also see 3 more. It’s not always best to shoot everything you can see. The RO may have been trying to advise you to move through the stage further before engaging the next 3. Just speculation here. And he may have just been being a thing. If it were me and I was limited on options meaning I was going to be shooting matches here for a bit, I would straighten it out. Simply arrive early, find the guy, and politely have a conversation with him. Explain yourself and get it worked out before it gets worse. You don’t know what you don’t know. Perhaps he doesn’t understand how his actions are being interpreted. If he says he was just trying to be helpful, thank him but ask him to please not be so helpful while your shooting the stage. If he gets upset, simply ask for another RO. Either way the healing can begin -PTR
  8. Well, you made me look. My newer gun only has about 1500 through it and port still look’s factory. My older one has about 8500 on it and shows the same wear you described. Rear of port has a line about 1/4” long and upper part of port has a slightly smaller area. Still runs amazing so a drop of oil is my fix.
  9. Here’s a simple fact. Everything is usually a pro / con relationship. Even if the JP-5 did require more cleaning, which it doesn’t, the reliability & how good it shoots more than make up for it. Both of mine have remained very clean but then like stated, I don’t let it get too bad before a rub down.
  10. Last time I cleaned a batch of brass I tried something a bit different. I wet tumble in a cement mixer and do the Dawn / Lemmishine thing then wash and wax. Also Lanolin/ 99% for lube. This time after wash and wax I drained water, refilled and added about 1.5oz of Lanolin and ran for 10 minutes then didn’t rinse off. Have been loading with no additional lube and this has worked pretty well. I still after loading 3-4 hundred spread them out on a towel and wipe off with alcohol to remove any excess. This has worked well and gets rid of the gunk issue.
  11. You’re never going to need a backup gun………..until you do. Then you’ll be glad you brought it. I always bring a backup & enough ammo / mags for both guns to shoot the entire match. I’ve yet to need the backup but I have loaned it to a buddy on several occasions.
  12. A lot of guys, myself included, have gone from the JP GMR-15 to the JP-5. There will be a lot of 15’s up for sale soon. Do a WTB on here and plenty will pop up. I’m partial to JP’s just because they are ultra reliable but there are a ton of options in that price range.
  13. So the new golden rule is “ Don’t be a ……… Delta????”
  14. You seem pretty certain that it’s due to the station 1-2 move. Just an idea. Have you been able to replicate the issue with only one piece of brass there or does it only occur with a full shell plate?
  15. About every 2 matches ( maybe every match if I’m bored ) I’ll pull the bolt, give it a rub down and a little oil. You simply turn he roller assy @ 90 degrees then turn the lock block the same. Entire process takes about 90 seconds and no tools. Not to mention the 5’s seem to stay much cleaner than my GMR-15’s did.
  16. I don’t have nearly the experience with this model as others here but just my $0.03 ( which is just a little more than $0.02). I have JP’s base spare parts kit. I’m only @ 5K rounds into my first 5 and have a secondary gun now. My plan is to change FP, extractor, ejector, roller & buffer springs at 10K intervals. Also buffer O-rings at that point. Needed, prob not but springs are cheap so why chance it? Total cost is less than a couple of open mag springs. One other item I plan to replace after 10K is the clip that retains the ejector arm. No pressure on it but might be cheap insurance. $0.50 might wreck a stage one day. Prob overkill but no more than I shoot by the time I get 50K on both guns JP will come out with the new hotness and this cycle will start again. Thread re-derail time. On the 45deg optic, I never ran one on my GMR’s but succumbed to the temptation on the 5’s. First time and no experience initially. Step one, make sure the cover is off! Don’t ask!! It’s like moving from irons to an optic. You still need to learn the index but once done, it’s just another tool in your arsenal. The 45 is basically like a backup gun, you don’t need it until you do. Then it’s great. But that isn’t often. If you plan to use it make sure you plan for it in walkthrough & visualization. All boils down to personal preference. -PTR
  17. They hit hard and fast the other day. I was actually disappointed. The thought of all the Ukrainian beauties and being able to fly for free indefinitely was nice. Thanks for the cleanup job mods. @ 90 minutes it was back to normal.
  18. Whats your load data? Just my worthless opinion and no data to back it up but if you’re running something like N320 / Titegroup loads I doubt you will see much if any improvement with the vertical port comp. Just not much gas / pressure there. A slightly slower powder would probably be in order. However with the barrel length/ leverage it creates just a small amount of downward force may be noticeable. I went with the steel challenge models simply for the weight savings. I’ve kicked around the idea of going to a vertical port comp but am saving that for a last resort. Lot of debate on carbine comps with no data and of course, everyone has a different opinion. As far as putting it on a diet, earlier in this thread the guys have several recommendations that may be helpful. If you do elect to change comps please post your findings. Inquiring minds want to know. Thanks - PTR
  19. No no no. I very sorry for not being more clear. Mine also has two weights but only one has a small 45. Just wanted to throw that out there. It’s small enough that it might not be noticeable. Sorry for the confusion.
  20. You're not confused. This is exactly correct. I got my first 5 about a month ago and have done a lot of testing. The 80 it ships with is ultra reliable and feels / runs well with ammo up to @ 130PF. Higher than that and performance begins to degrade. Moving to a 70 & the difference is night & day. It seems to perform best in the 133-137 range. Below this threshold it's very soft but has the sluggish feel of soft 147 loads. Above and the 70 runs out of steam pretty quickly. The 60 is a different beast altogether. It seems like the 80-70-60 jumps are not linear. With lower PF loads the 60 is basically a rimfire. Laughably soft. However ejection is predictably weak. For me the 60 requires PF of @ 143 and above to act right. Mine is the SC model. Since February was tinker month, after a lot of playing I settled on PD 115 JHP V2's with 5.2g of N340 and the 60. Makes @ 146PF and does exactly what I want it to. I also played with the buffer a bit but after several different combos wound back up with the stock setup. The stock spring in mine is the black / uncolored which JP list as their 15-85. I tried a 15-90 and although it was slightly better, I had ejection concerns and moved back to the 85. Also just an FYI. The buffer has one weight with a small 45 deg cut on it to take off the edge. Just something to be aware of. Now for the quick review. I was on the original wait list and after some deliberation I declined to order one then and decided to stick with my 2 trusty GMR-15's. Reason being the cost vs improvement range. Plus I was shooting open mostly anyway. End result, biggest mistake I've made in a long time. Now 5 number 2 on order and both Open guns in safe. The hype is real. This is as close to cheating as you can get without getting banned from the game. Attempting to explain how they shoot to someone verbally is an exercise in futility. You just have to experience it for yourself to believe it. Also for the disclaimer. The test results listed above are mine alone and not intended to cause any micro aggressions. Good day to all. -PTR
  21. Wouldn't a hypothetical 13th shot that hit result in extra shot & extra hit penalties from one action? Not saying that I think 2 are in order here. Just that no penalty is IMHO incorrect. Going to soak my brain in hooch until I forget about this.
  22. So, my big takeaway from this is the next time I make a VC stage, I should print two identical WSB's. Two ply paper should make it easier for the shooter to wipe their a$$ with the WSB right? Yes, I'm a resident of Mississippi, born & raised. However, I am at least somewhat fluent in English. At least I thought I was. So now the phrase " only 2 ", means 1 or 3? Copied from their explanation: The procedure does not say that the reload comes after 6 shots. Copied from their WSB: engage T1-T3 with only two rounds per target, make a mandatory reload, then engage T1-T3 with only two rounds per target. 3 targets X ONLY 2 rounds on each. I think the formula is 3 x 2 = 6? Then again, math's not my strong suit. Looks to me like the WSB clearly in plain English states precisely when the RL should be performed. Whatever silly interpretation anyone rationalizes for it, only 2 shots per target 3 times adds up to 6. 7 is not ok!
  23. Cold wash / gentle cycle only. I used hot water once and some of my 9mm brass shrunk down to .380's. Don't overthink it. Lots of Dawn and a pinch of LemiShine. Cheap cement mixer from HF. Let it run until neighbors can't handle the noise anymore. Then another 90 minutes. Rinse well and spread on beach towels in the shop for a week. Ready to go.
  24. OP. I joined the “somewhat “ civilized world a while back an d went to a MK7 drive still on a 650. I had one on order but a friend was upgrading to an apex and made me a deal. I only shoot 12-15K rds a year so bulk output is not my primary concern. Consistently is. My machine will run at 1800 rds / hr. Wide open!! If u try loading open ammo on a 650 like this powder would fly like a yard sprinkler and more indexer ring plastic would fly out than loaded ammo. So I don’t do it. With top slowdown, top dwell and index dropped I run about 470 rds/ hr. Still with adding primers, brass, Bullets and powder 1K finished product is less than 3 hrs. Anything less than perfect adjustment wise on your press will be amplified when automated. If u want raw high output, simple fact is you will get what u pay for. Also the larger machines are much more forgiving due to automation. As far as the MK 7 on a 650 the only problem is the 650. I love mine but it has its limitations. As long as u stay within these limits it’s fantastic. When you exceed them it will let you know.
