Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. The soft shooting has value but after the beep you won't even notice the recoil. I have tried a bone stock H&K 45, 10mm in limited and S&W 625 .45 in matches and not once did I notice the recoil. In fact on one stage with the 10mm (not powder puff loads, around 207 PF factory rounds) I started inexplicably (more than just that I suck) missing. I kept easing off the grip thinking I was pulling the gun with the trigger to the point that I limp wristed and stovepiped on the fourth try. Recoil never entered my mind. Down the road it will matter but you will change your mind on what you want to shoot a zillion times before then. I would go with the most reliable and then cheapest comfortable option to start. Be safe and have fun. Plus, slow and smooth is fast. You want to start training your muscles with the proper technique and if you do that the speed will come. We like to have new shooters so just remember for now that your only competition is yourself. It is way more fun that it looks and is instantly addictive. And welcome!
  2. Thanks Tim, that exactly the kind of thing that I wanted to hear. My wallet is now hiding somewhere but that is my problem. If I could get my other stuff to run 50K without any issues I would be very happy. To the top of the list it goes.
  3. I'm broke, so would you guys please stop? With that said, how long have these been out in .45, and what is the highest round count anyone knows about through a near factory stock one? I have been missing my Series 70 Colt and the Sig Max was already alongside the STI Lawman on my "to buy later" list before I stumbled across this thread. It might be good for me to go without food for a few months anyway.
  4. Ha, thanks Jack but I admit it is easier to have my attitude when I feel that I smoked a stage at 62 seconds flat and the next guy up does it in 7.5 seconds. I guess there is a reason he has a sponsor and I do not. The big rock is running great now that I have had Benny Hill here tune it for me. The only problem it has given me is that it always shoot right where I point it instead of where I want it to hit.
  5. Yup, my problem is solved. 400 rounds today, including 250 during a match, and no more magazine poops.
  6. My RIA Big Rock 10mm uses the same Para 16 round .40 magazines (ships with one from the factory and that is what you get from Greg Cote as well) and it is doing the same thing. I was only getting a sliver of engagement between the mag release and the mag slot. I verified that the mag was properly inserted and I had nothing touching the release button. Still, I had a rash of the the Big Rock taking a Big Poop after a shot and releasing the magazine at my feet. While I was waiting for RIA to send me a replacement mag release I ordered a Dawson Posi-Lock 2011 mag release. The OD of the button was .283 and the bore in the frame was .280. I turned the button down to .279 and it grabbed and held the magazines wonderfully. But it is designed for either a thinner magazine and/or a thicker frame because the magazine does release when you push the button but the land of the mag release on the button side traps the magazine. So you either have to train yourself under pressure to only press the mag release button "soooo" much or press and then release just a little before releasing completely. That is no good for competition and it was too much material to remove for me to bother with it any farther. My replacement mag release arrived from RIA today and the engagement is much better. If I was not too stupid to post a picture I could show a comparison between the two (or three) but the difference is obvious. I am heading to the range in the morning to see if my problem is solved. I will let you know how it goes.
  7. I managed to activate the hook pivot with a slight taper very small Craftsman screwdriver through the empty lever hole. The slide has been removed. At least I can do a complete inspection and cleaning now.
  8. Thanks that is the same answer that High Standard gave me when I called them today. Sadly they are sold out as is High Standard. At least the guy at High Standard ran to the back to rummage around to see if he could find one. That is good service even if it was unsuccessful. I need the entire assembly and retaining pin.
  9. I picked up a High Standard HD Military this weekend at a gun show for what I thought was a good deal. Yesterday I had time to disassemble it for inspection and cleaning and discovered that the takedown lever is missing. If I could order one and install it I would just consider it a stupidity tax and move on. BUT, I cannot find a way to remove the slide without the takedown lever installed. I spent about 45 minutes jiggling is around trying to get the hook to rotate downwards but I made no progress. I had to stop and let my patience regenerate before I tried any more. Does anyone know how to remove the slide with the takedown lever missing without damaging the gun? Almightly Google only says jiggle it or saw it apart and re-weld which ain't gonna happen. Also, everywhere I look online that does list the takedown lever and retaining pin show them as out of stock. I have not called High Standard yet since it really makes no difference until I can get the slide off. Are there any other good sources for High Standard parts out there that I might be missing? Thanks for any help. PS Thankfully the Duramatic that I Also picked up was in great shape internally so I do have a new plinker to keep me sated for a while.
  10. Yes there was some sarcasm there. It is nearly impossible to convey tone with text. If the belt had been illegal per the old rules, I consider your response to be very reasonable. I would not be offended with a "No, you can't do that." I think that we can both agree that at a level 2 or higher match there would be no allowance for such a thing even once. Your response is basically the response I was given just worded differently. My paraphrasing was poor. The real message that I took from the answer that I was given was that I could wear the belt but it would not be long before I figured out that I do not want to. The fact that the tool belt is legal by the current rules simplifies things. Interestingly, I tried an old 1 inch military style belt with the friction buckle that would have been legal by the old rule and it was completely unacceptable to the level that I would call it unsafe. Everything flopped around during casual movement and I had concerns that it could dump the entire rig (and maybe my pants) during aggressive movement. A normal every day belt was more secure, but stuff was still flopping around to the point that grip tensions needed to be dialed way up to make sure that nothing fell out and the holster moved during the draw. The 2 inch tool belt is much more stable and secure, but that might be more about my bonus layer of fat preventing any upward movement. There is no belt movement during the draw and to the amazement and bewilderment of my wife, I was able to do the funky chicken with the grip tensions backed off to a reasonable level with nothing falling out. But all of that was enough that I already have a "proper" belt on the way so by the match next weekend this will just be an amusing memory. Plus, now we have a record of a belt option for overalls.
  11. This is exactly the information I was looking for. My 2" tool belt is legal without belt loops if secure; it is just an easily avoidable handicap. The proper belts at Shooter's Connection are very reasonable, maybe I should buy an extra one to go with my dress shoes. The RO had already ruled that I could shoot this weekend using the tool belt (local match) but it would be considered illegal for a "real" match if I went somewhere. I will have a proper belt long before I venture away from home so it really does not matter but thanks for the rule clarification.
  12. Thanks for the welcomes. I think that Benny signed my membership application. Ammo cost is only 90+% of the cost, why should I make it easier on myself? I might end up loading my 10's into needlessly long 40 S&W but I still like the idea of being able to go into full *BOOM* mode from ping ping ping with only the change of a mag. Maybe I will come to my senses later but for now I will giggle until my wrist or my wallet breaks. Jim already told me that I was going to have to bribe people to time me running that thing even with normal factory watered down ammo. Edit: I fail at grammar.
  13. Hello, My name is Jeph and I have a problem. I don't have enough guns and I don't get to burn enough powder. I recently relocated to Corpus Christi, Texas after 7 years in Germany. My boss invited my wife and I out to the local range to "shoot a little shotgun." When he showed up in his shooting team shirt I was a little worried. When he pulled a race gun out of his truck I was concerned. When everyone else was also pulling out (sometimes multiple) custom race guns I thought about going home. When I learned that it was practical shooting with moving and reloading I was honestly afraid and did try to go home. My wife is German and other than a day at the Gun Store in Las Vegas (where she did great) she has never held a gun. The thought of her running around with a 12 gauge frightened me more than how bad I was about to perform. But, everyone was very welcoming, helpful and understanding. And, most importantly we both had a blast and we were hooked. I am about to start competing in the local USPSA in pistol and shotgun. I was going to run my HK USP .45 (my nightstand gun) in the production division, but the new RIA "Big Rock" double stack 10mm screamed my name so I will now be making a fool of myself in the limited division but I will never have to worry about power factor. I wanted to run something other than an STI or a Glock and I love the 1911 style and I simply ran out of excuses. I have some serious heavy hitters that shoot at my club so I have no illusions of being competitive but I am looking forward to having a lot of fun burning powder in a safe, dynamic environment.
