  1. Thanks guys! Ha ha! A special thanks to you Warren for being my machnist teacher and mentor!
  2. I just finished this one for myself. 10mm STI frame and slide. Blued slide, hard chromed frame, blued externals French cut lines Bottom edge of slide is beveled Hi-power cut Flat topped. Custom front sight blended to slide Dawson rear sight Front strapped hand checkered 30lpi Internals and safties are all choice parts (EGW, Ed Brown, etc) The grips and magwell are used from a previous gun I had.
  3. The comp that ended up on the gun is actually a little different than the comp that is shown being made in the pictures. The first comp was made out of 1.5 inch diameter material. I did this so I could end up with with a comp that hung down lower and meet the line between the frame and slide. However, a potential problem arose with the long dust cover. I discovered that if the loctite ever broke loose and the comp indexed just a little, the back of the comp would hit the corner of the frame when the barrel unlocked. This caused the whole thing to jam up and potentially damage the comp/frame/and threads on the barrel. I ended up cutting the corners of the comp off to prevent this, but it was ugly so I made a second comp. The second time around I cut the diameter of the blank so that it would not hit the corners. I also reversed the ports. The first comp had a 1/4 diameter port first and then several 3/16 in ports. The second time around I put the 1/4 in port last. I did this to retain a little more gas longer. [edited for typos]
  4. Thanks. It's a Grizzly...I think the model is 3102?? It's not fancy. It's a good basic beginner vertical mill. I would really like to get something bigger and add a DRO, but I don't have the room at my house. Need a new house first. D
  5. Thx! Yep. Here's the photo album link again: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.3099628863866.115729.1658508105&type=3&l=7679d28921

  10. Thanks Bill! I ran it this weekend at the Ohio State Championship....it ran great!
  11. I am a USPSA shooter but occasionally I will shoot an IDPA match. Recently I signed up for a state level IDPA match and filled out the registration. I got to the part where you had the option of selecting a special category (i.e., Lady, LEO, Industry, etc), and I remembered that I had seen some other sponsored shooters select "Industry" in the past because they represented several companies in the shooting industry. This was the first and only time I had ever selected "Industry" but thought it was OK based on what I saw others do. I sent the registration off. A few weeks later I get a call from the match director asking me about my "Industry" category selection. He himself was unsure of the definition. I told him the reason why I selected it (as stated above). Turns out, there is NO subcategory definitions in the IDPA Rules. So this particular MD made a bunch of calls and asked a few other MDs about it and he got several different answers for the definition. He has since emailed IDPA HQ for an official definition. We are still waiting for a response. For what it's worth, it doesn't really matter to me if I can select the special category or not. If they say that shooting teams that represent shooting companies are NOT considered "Industry", that's fine with me. It's not a big deal. However, this got me thinking, if there is an issue with the "Industry" category, how do they define the other categories?? Below are subcategory/category excerpts from the IDPA and USPSA rule books. Here are some questions to consider: * Look at the IDPA High Lady category....Is Lady defined by body parts? Chromosomes? or sex on drivers license? * Look at the IDPA category, High Law Enforcement.....does a part time security guard count as Law Enforcement? * Look at IDPA High Press.....Is a person that runs a blog considered "Press"? If I write articles and they get published in Front Sight, does this make me Press?? Also look at the USPSA category definitions....the "Lady" category is NOT defined. Same comment as above. IDPA and USPSA need to define or better define the categories if they are going to recognize them. Match directors and section/area coordinators are having to make decisions on whether shooters meet these categories and that is wrong. HQ should make these decisions. Anyway, I thought this was something that needed discussing. Cheers, Darren IDPA Subcategory Description from the IDPA rule book: USPSA Category Definitions from the USPSA rule book: [edited for typos]
  12. PS: The shorter 5 inch slide will be lighter, reducing recoil. D
  13. That's a 6 inch frame and slide, eh? If I were you, I would go with the 6 inch frame, but I would definitely go with the lighter 5 inch slide on top of it. Yes, the frame will extend beneath the comp...but you could have a custom square bottom comp made that would mate up great with the top of the frame. The Greenfield's both shoot guns like I describe....here's some pictures of their guns: Sherwyn and Nick Greenfield's Open guns:
  14. [it's] a hair under 50 ounces. I'm using an aluminum C-More which I'm sure is a tad heavier than the plastic scopes. My comp also has a little more meat in it than most...and it also has some special, super secret design features. Just kidding....however, it does have a few features that most comps don't have. [edited for typo]
  15. It obviously is a little heavier in the nose...which is exactly what I was going for. Shoots real flat. All the BS you read about heavier guns indexing slower, etc....I don't notice any of that.
  16. LOL. Thanks! If you're interested, last winter I built an IDPA ESP/USPSA Limited gun, two winters ago I built my now backup Open gun. I've also done some Browning Buckmark conversions, custom basepads, etc....you could see pictures here: https://www.facebook.com/media/albums/?id=333470123330494 Take care, Darren
  17. Thanks! I only work on stuff for me, family, and friends.
  18. http://www.mahovskysmetalife.com/ did the hard chroming. They have hard chromed several of my guns and I've been happy with all of them. The "blems" (some file and machine marks not completely removed) are my fault..I did the gunsmithing. D
  19. Thanks! The more I look at it, the more I wish I would have cut some matching horizontal lines on the slide (as I did on the frame). Oh well... As you see, I wanted a little more weight up front. I love the feel. Darren
  20. I just got my open gun back from the hard chromer. It looks pretty good. Hard chroming does a great job of showing all the "mistakes"....like areas where I got a little too deep with the file or areas where I didn't get all the machine marks out. Most people probably wouldn't notice these things but I do. I may still drill a couple decorative holes in the trigger...but for the most part, it's done. If you want to see pictures of the build process, you can check out this album: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.350356271641879.99700.333470123330494&type=3&l=b2fce407f5 Darren
  21. I'm not stating an opinion. I'm stating a fact...he COULD NOT keep up with me. Ask anyone that knows me if I'm fast. BTW, I'm 40.....not so young considering we have a lot of teen and twenty somethings out there kicking ass. D
