Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. Have been reading some on the Hornady 105gr. Shows the A-Max should have at least a 1:8 twist. As for the BTHP, could not find any specs showing only fast twist. May load a few and see how they go. Should be obvious if they don't tear clean holes in paper. May try a ladder with Varget and see how it goes. Thoughts?
  2. I have some Magpro and also Varget. A lot of people like Varget for a wide range of calibers. Thoughts on these two? Need to see what I can find in the way of 4350 and H1000.
  3. Have a Browning A-Bolt II with the BOSS. Have had it since new 1994. Would like to find some good target loads for strictly accuracy. I happen to have a box of the Hornady BTHP in 105gr. Might be a little heavy for the 1:10 twist factory barrel. Have shot factory loads with both 80gr and 100gr Federal. Seems to group fairly well. Haven't had it out to the range for a while. Just wondering what powders I should be looking at for the 105gr as well I have some plated 80gr. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
  4. I recently ran a ladder with an XTreme 147gr RN-HPCB and N320. OAL is 1.16. Pistol is a CZ75 ShadowLine: 3.4gr Avg fps - 866 | Avg PF - 127 | SD - 15 | ES - 40 3.5gr Avg fps - 895 | Avg PF - 132 | SD - 7 | ES - 22 3.6gr Avg fps - 910 | Avg PF - 134 | SD - 6 | ES - 18 3.7gr Avg fps - 924 | Avg PF - 136 | SD - 10 | ES - 33 Also ran 10 of the 3.7gr over the chrono through my HK VP9: 3.7gr Avg fps - 919 | Avg PF - 135 | SD - 5 | ES - 15 Excellent info!!! Seems like the 3.6gr area is the sweet spot for you.
  5. I happened on some VV N320. One previous post suggested 3.0-3.5gr for the 147. Good range to work in?
  6. Great input! Going to try some various loads and powders again. I do have Bullseye, but don't see much with it and the 147gr. I am wanting a lighter shooting round to help my fiance get used to the 9mm and also to help me work on trigger pull and flinch. I'm def not a pro shooter or even a bullseye shooter. Just like to go out and challenge myself to get better by technique improvement. Appreciate all of the input!
  7. Seems that a lot of people like the VV N320, haven't seen any in my area for a long while. Any suggestions for Silhouette with the 147gr Xtreme?
  8. Loaded 10 groups of 5 of various powders and charges. Best functioning with light recoil was the Titegroup at 3.2gr but had a much better case seal with 3.4gr without adding too much recoil. Seems like this is very well liked. I also had good results with Silhouette and Unique. Silhouette at 4.3gr was very good. I may go down .2 to 4.1gr and try that. Tried two sets with Unique, 4.3gr and 4.1gr. Both were good. May try .2 down to 3.9 and check chamber seal and function. Tried Power Pistol at 3.5gr and 3.8gr. 3.5gr didn't cycle slide well. 3.8gr functioned ok but seemed to have more snap to the recoil. Maybe just me but that's what I felt. I used a bag for a rest to eliminate as much of me as possible. CFE Pistol at 3.8gr poor function. 4.0gr and 4.2gr were better. Again, seemed to have more recoil. Going to load more TG at 3.2 and 3.4 to verify initial trial. Going to try Silhouette and Unique at slightly lower charges and also at initial test charges. I loaded all rounds at 1.150". If I were going to try different seating depths, what is a good change to notice a difference? Have read many load down to 1.115 and all the way up to 1.165. Now looking for seating suggestions, I know every gun responds differently, just don't want to waste a lot of time and materials by changing depth by too little of amount. Thanks to all for helping supply a huge amount of info. It definitely helps a lot! Forgot, was going to run some Bullseye but not sure on charge to start with. Would it be worthwhile to give Bullseye a try? A friend has some of the new BE-86, anyone know much about it?
  9. You are absolutely correct. Fat fingered the max Oal. Should have been 1.220, changed it, thanks. I checked some factory loads, Blazer aluminum and brass in 115gr were both 1.150-1.152 Federal HST 147gr was 1.121. So starting at 1.150 seems a safe bet. So reducing oal may help accuracy? Help with more consistent pressures? Like to know all the little things while I learn.
  10. I checked the max oal in one of my Sig 226 barrels using the above posted method. Used a fired case that fit well in the barrel but allowed the bullet to be snug but still slide. To my surprise, and using several cases and bullets, the max came out to 1.220. I had to check several times and it was very consistent. With that info, most any length will work as long as mag fitment is ok. Here is what I have to test: 3.2gr Titegroup at 1.150" with xtreme 147gr RN 3.4gr Titegroup at 1.150" with xtreme 147gr RN 3.5gr Power Pistol at 1.150" with xtreme 147gr RN Would like to give the CFE Pistol a try. rtp has a load of 4.2gr at 1.140 Also Bullseye seems to be popular. robport has a load of 3.2gr but no oal. May add these to my next range session and see what works best. Thoughts on all of these?
  11. Thanks for the OAL link, rtp. Same basic method as using the Hornady OAL gauge using their modified cases for rifles. Great info. I was just thinking of doing something like this. Better to find an actual max OAL which contacts the riflings, then back off accordingly. So much info in these forums. I am never reluctant in asking what I may think is a dumb question, it's probably been asked many times before. And the best part, almost never get razzed for asking, normally get excellent answers, and usually much more info! Thanks to all!!! Going to start some workups with Titegroup and also a few others.
  12. Excellent! Since I have access to a variety of powders, I will do some workups on several different ones. With my .40 Sig, I did a workup on 180gr xtreme with 231 and had issues on the low end. Ended up at 4.1gr of 231, no issues with gun function and shot well. Appreciate all of the input!
  13. Thanks for the quick replies. I have several Sig 226's and a 2022. Have read Titegroup is well liked but can be sensitive to powder weight. Not much difference between min load and max load. typically .5gr. I suppose I have a lot of options. As long as I don't go too light and stay clear of max, should be good to check for function and then consistency. Any others?
  14. I have been reading a huge amount on light recoil 9mm loads. Most suggested 147gr. I have xtreme 147gr RN. The powders I can choose from are Power Pistol, Silhouette, Bullseye, CFE Pistol, Unique, Titegroup and 231. I have found some suggested loads but many are for lead bullets and the OAL ranges from 1.100" to 1.165". I am confident in making sure I don't over charge but my questions come in on OAL. Does anyone have some suggested loads with OAL that I can start from? A lot of load data is done with a Hornady XTP which in a HP and I don't know how that data would translate to a Plated RN. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I am fairly new to reloading so I would rather be cautious and careful. I have figured out some nice loads for my .40 S&W but that was a lot easier than this 147gr 9mm stuff. Thanks again Glen
