Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. I added the dot to my EDC about a year ago. The Holosun SCS on a G19 allows the standard height irons to be used on the bottom third of the window. No on/off, no adjusting brightness, no changing batteries, it's just always there. In my experience, after a year of practice and competition with it, there's no speed difference at close range and an absolute advantage at mid to longer ranges over irons. One huge advantage of training with a dot is that it gives much more precise information (feedback) to the shooter. If your grip or presentation is inconsistent you see it more obviously when the dot doesn't appear vs irons. If you're jerking the trigger or flinching, the dot movement before the shot breaks and the sights lift, it's much easier to see. At distance, the precision of the dot is far superior to irons in seeing where shots break (infinite sight radius!). I think what I, and many people, struggle with early on is over-confirming the dot on closer targets when that's just not needed. Like someone said earlier, at 3 yards you don't needs sights, or even to see a dot in the window.
  2. From the older rulebook, rule 8.5Q Q. For male shooters only, the holsters must fit the shooter’s body such that a ¾ inch diameter dowel placed between the shooter and the firearm anywhere above the belt contacts both the shooter and the firearm simultaneously
  3. You as well! I’m glad your match turned around. I had a great time last week. Despite a few boneheaded mistakes and totally missing a drop-turner, I finished 1st place CCP SS with a match bump to Expert. Running the timer all week on stage 9 was fun. It was one of my better stages so it was good for my ego to see how many people I beat on that one. It always stinks to work a stage you sucked on!
  4. I'll be an SO, likely on bay 13, and shooting CCP on Tuesday & Wednesday with my G19.
  5. I heard 20+ from a friend working the match. ~125 shot the match.
  6. I see that it definitely requires more creativity from stage designers and builders. You have to make doing the action you want the fastest way to activate a target or get through the stage. We've been operating under this basic rule for at least the last year. For example, at the Iowa state match last year to open several windows required a dowel stuck through several holes. Taking the dowel with you was the best way to do expose those targets. For our local match last year I built an activator out of an old pallet that required dropping a brick in a bag down into it to activate it. It would be very hard to activate without that brick or running around the obstacles, hence, people carried the brick in a bag through the stage. Generally, at big matches they already have more elaborate props that can accommodate this. Local matches will struggle more trying to be creative with stage designs that are practical.
  7. I’m assuming the weapon mounted lights are not okay for ssp since they aren’t in the allowed list. 50 to 30 yard max distance changed for standards stages. Fault lines don’t extend to the stage boundaries. I’m trying to understand exactly what that means in practice. Does it mean you can’t engage 9 feet away from the poc? Maybe some can help me understand this change.
  8. Ah yes... I remember guns much better than names or faces!
  9. I was SSO on Icy River Bank, doing regular SSO duties and pre-"loading" (division capacity mag inserted with chamber empty) on-deck shooters. Pretty sure I spoke to everyone who shot that stage! It had a challenging swinger, tight non-threats, and one of the aforementioned vision barriers. There was definitely more than one way to shoot that stage and would reward you with less movement if you took some tighter shots past non-threats. I saw that this stage had the most hits on NTs in the match as a result.
  10. Yes, if you are an IDPA member please let them know what you did, and did not, like about the match. This was my first time being at IDPA Nationals so I'm not familiar with how it's been done in the past. However, I have heard that they are already planning on changes to the squading and scheduling for next year. Now is a great time for constructive input. As an SO at the match, I agree that it felt rushed and I didn't like "pushing" competitors through two walk-throughs at once. I've already talked to a few people and will email the MD in the coming weeks with my thoughts on making the match run smoother and be more enjoyable for everyone next time. Cameo should shave 9 more private bays completed soon. Lack of bays cannot be any excuse! I had not heard of any controversy with Coley's PE. What happened there? All that said, I had a great time at my first Nationals! I will definitely be applying to return as staff again next year. This was the first time I'd met the Match Director, Seth Hayden. Super nice guy and I'm sure his matches will only get better.
  11. It was designed to be exactly that! They seem committed to making it so. Really looking forward to seeing almost 500 shooters there for this match!
  12. Congratulations! I'll be there as well on staff. Do you mind my asking how many points you had? Also what are you shooting? I'll be shooting my G19 in CCP in the SS classification. It is an amazing facility for sure. I've shot there a few times and am always envious of the locals that get to use it regularly!
  13. I had this happen one of the first times I had my new M3000 from MOA out. I found that I didn't have the extension nut tightened all the way. The barrel was not quite fully seated and it was causing light strikes. It wouldn't do it every round, but did twice out of about 25. The second time I took a closer look and got it tightened down better. Now I take special care to push the barrel in hard when I tighten that nut. I'm sure I was just being overly ginger with my new shotgun while reassembling it those first few times. Since yours is a reoccurring issues this may not be related but thought I'd throw it out there.
  14. I have the 1-4x HD by SWFA, which also has a FFP reticle. I bought it because I loved the idea of the reticle it came with. It has surpassed by expectations. I love it. It is not the same one that the 1-6x has though. There is a great review and discussion of the early model of the 1-4 here that sold me on it. http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_18/527840_Review_of_the_SWFA_SS_1_4X24_HD__Updated__Page_6_.html One 1x the circle is a great size for fast target acquisition and at 4x it offers very usable hash marks for hold-over. I was able to buy mine directly from them when they had a sale, so paid well under the retail price. They can be found used for about $600, if you're patient.
  15. I've been struggling to reduce muzzle flip lately and just watched this video last night on gripping. You're faster than I am already, but maybe this will help. One thing I've determined about the grip I've been using seems to be true of yours as well. That is, that the left hand wrist angle is wrong and needs to be rolled forward more, allowing the left wrist to lock down.
