  1. I wouldnt practice doing it wrong, you don’t want that subconscious expectation in the back of your head when shooting one in a match. I think a lot of people are intimidated by stars because most can’t practice them in live fire. Just remember that it’s five separate targets and shoot them one at a time. You don’t want to rush yourself into missing because you feel like you need to shoot the plates quickly before they start moving. Be disciplined in your dryfire to call your shots and go one for one on each plate. This will carry over into live fire/match day because you’ll already know how to shoot it and that you can.
  2. I don’t know that it would be any more useful than a static Texas star target. Depending on your preferred pattern, you (should) shoot most if not all the plates before it really gets spinning too much anyway. I usually shoot them clockwise, and in dryfire I just shoot the 5 o’clock plate two more times because that’s where the others would end up.
  3. Not sure if they’ll do custom cuts, but Jagerwerks is a great company to deal with.
  4. Brass basepads would add some weight. Stainless steel or tungsten guide rod are common. I’ve also heard of people getting really creative and filling the backstrap with birdshot and putting a plug in it, or using lead tape in the front end of the frame.
  5. I started with a Glock 34 in Production. Eventually, I got bored and switched to a Stock 2. Shot the Stock 2 to M class until I tried out Carry Optics. I fell in love with the dot and capacity so now I’m shooting a 2011 in open this coming season.
  6. The guys around here who shoot open Glocks shoot .40 because they claim 9 major is too harsh on the gun.

    Shoes

I’m in the Midwest and my local Scheels carries them. It’s the only place I’ve found them.
  8. Ive found brass head stamp has a lot to do with it. I’ve taken to using one or two head stamps I know are consistent for major matches and the rest for locals/practice.

    Shoes

I like the Speedcross 4. Fits all the way around your foot like a glove. Lightweight, tread is nice and grippy. I have also had some New Balance lightweight trail running shoes I really liked.
  10. What mag pouches sit the lowest on the belt? I have pretty long arms and I’m changing to open soon. My current Ghost pouches feel awkward as they sit pretty high on the belt. CR Speed pouches look very low and seem like just the ticket, but I would really prefer a bullets out option if I can find one.
  11. Stoeger shoots a Tanfoglio but the basepads he uses are also available for CZ in the same design. They are the Shockbottle Easy Off basepads. They are well made and very easy to pop on and off for quick cleaning.
  12. +1 on changing your shoes. Nothing says you have to wear your “shooting shoes” to shoot, especially if they’re not ideal for the situation. I wear my everyday Onitsuka Tiger shoes for indoor matches and have never had an issue on concrete floors.
  13. YouTube. If I’m feeling lazy and want to skip dryfire, I’ll watch some GMs I follow on YouTube and it gets me off the couch and into the dojo every time.
  14. Brian states in his book that he and Rob Leatham experimented with this a lot and they found it was always faster to stand and shoot than remain seated. I’ve never been forced to shoot sitting down but it seems like you couldn’t be nearly as aggressive with essentially no stance to help absorb recoil or help drive quick transitions.
  15. I should point out again that I prefer the DPP based solely on window size. In USPSA you don’t always have the perfect conditions for the dot to appear in the perfect spot. Bigger window=more forgiving=faster.
  16. Lizard bedding walnut with Nu Finish. The walnut doesn’t get the brass as shiny but I feel like the Nu Finish makes up for it. Best of both worlds between walnut and corncob imo.
  17. If you’re disciplined enough to use the top of the sights for a perfect sight picture in situations where you need one, the deeper or wider rear channel allows for more room to see a “sloppy” sight picture in situations where that’s all you need.
  18. Can’t attest to the brightness, but I looked at a FFIII in person when shopping for a Carry Optics dot. The window is quite small. As others have pointed out, this doesn’t always matter. If you hold the gun correctly with a good stance, you can still see the dot just fine. For USPSA, I prefer the bigger, more forgiving window of a DPP.
  19. I’m a big fan of the Sevigny sights made by Warren. The rear notch is deep and wide making it easy to get a very quick sight picture that you can then refine as necessary. They also offer a carry version with rounded corners if that’s your thing.
  20. Here’s a little throwback with a .45 Para
  21. Are there any other red dots that share the mounting pattern for a DPP? I have a slide cut for a DPP and would like to find a cheaper dot option since the gun is no longer in regular usage.
  22. Full mags with dummy rounds for me. The weight difference is pretty substantial. I also color the brass of my dummy rounds with red sharpie so they’re very identifiable as dummies.

    Enlarging Grip

Everyone seems to do grip reductions, has anyone tried making the grip larger? I was thinking epoxy and silicon carbide. I get shooter’s elbow with Glocks, but not with guns that have bigger grips (Beretta, 2011).
  24. I learned fast splits by shooting into a berm with no target. You have to learn to move your finger that fast. I find staying relaxed and not trying to focus too hard on what you’re doing with the trigger pull is helpful.
