Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. I tried a 14lb spring yesterday. It cycled perfectly with major as well as minor loads. It also felt less punishing to the gun with the heaviest loads. Will the standard 10lb spring give me any advantages when shooting minor loads or should I just stick with the 14lb??
  2. I have a custom buildt 5" 1911 38 Super. The smith who buildt the gun tells me that he has installed a 10 lb recoil spring for factory ammo but if I want to shoot major loads I should replace it with a 12 lb. 12 lb for major sounds very light to me. Which spring do you recommend for pf180 loads?
  3. That is a good point and I have been thinking the same thing. There is really only one way to find out. Range test at 25, 50, 75 and 100yds with the following three loads: 1. 124gr. load that stays supersonic all the way (and it will do that ) 2. 124gr. load that is transitioning at 50 yds or so. 3. 147gr. subsonic load I do not have access to a Ransom rest so all shots will be fired from a sand bag rest. If I should bet on the result I would say that there is a difference but shooter error will be even more and you cannot tell the groups from each other. I will post the results here but I have to wait a couple of months until we start practicing at our outdoor range
  4. I have Quicktarget, Exbal and Oehler Ballistic Explorer so I am pretty sure of my numbers.
  5. That depends on the bullet. 10,4gr. N105 behind a Hornady FMJ RN does 1477fps on the chrono from my 5" barrel. This bullet has a BC of .145 and will stay supersonic to 110yds. Not 115yds sorry.
  6. I am going to buy new hoster and magazine holders for whatever gun I choose. We have a Glock 17 in my club which I am free to use whenever I want. Is that a better choice?
  7. I am going to start shooting IPSC this spring and I am thinking about which gun to use. (I am a total newbe to IPSC) I prefer my 1911 but there is no single stack competitions here. My other gun is a 9mm Beretta Steel-I with adjustable sights. Will this do or do I have to consider a new gun?
  8. We shoot at ranges from 10yds to 125yds with most of the targets between 25 and 50yds. As I see it I have two choices with my 38 Super: 1. 125gr. load that stays supersonic to 115yds 2. 147gr. that starts subsonic The first is very flat shooting but with a "snappy" recoil The second is more pleasant to shoot but then I have to be better at ranging the most distant targets. What would you do?
  9. I don't know exactly what happens but when shooting rifles at long range the accuracy goes out the window when the velocity drops to subsonic. I beleive it makes the bullet wobble a bit. Riflebullets are probably more effected due to the length. Btw. my 95gr. 9mm load does 1345fps. I also use a 38 Super with heavier bullets but it is the same question.
  10. We have a national competition in my country where we shoot at targets at variable distances out to as far as 125y. I would like to take advantage of the flat shooting 95gr. wich is also my guns pet load. I just started wondering if I would be better of with a heavier bullet?
  11. It's a known fact for long range rifle shooters that a bullet fired supersonic, must be kept supersonic until it reaches the target. The bullet becomes unstable when it goes from super-to subsonic. How much does this effect 9mm handgun bullets? Is a 95gr. bullet only accurate as long as it stays supersonic?
  12. When I'm firing major loads in my 1911 the slide sometimes stays open with rounds left in the magazine. This happens one or two times with every magazine (10 rd) but only with major (pf 180) loads. My minor loads cycles perfectly. The gun is a custom buildt 38 Super with a ramped Kart barrel
  13. I live in Denmark and Vihtavuori is the most common powder here.
  14. No it doesn't. Shooting distance about two feet.
  15. I found that 10,4gr. N-105 and SR primer gives me 1476 fps (183pf) with no signs of excessive pressure in my 5" 1911. Pretty awesome
