  1. I searched but not very hard so if this has been thrashed out in another thread, point me in that direction [emoji4]

Wanted to know everyone's opinion on safeties for the 1911 / 2011 guns.

I have always had ambis but don't remember using them all that much if at all and was wondering if anyone else felt the same.

So, what do you like and why and for what game/use ?

Do you ever shoot weak hand only? That is my main reason for using them. It gives my thumb a reference point of where it shoud be and makes sure my meaty hands dont nudge the safety up.

  2. That's really personal preference to how you want your gun timed to your ammo.

In my limited guns I use a 17lb hammer spring and stuck to that because I was able to get a trigger I liked and I knew that it would set off darn near any primer I put in the gun. For the recoil springs I ended up at a 12 lb recoil spring, but I fooled around with 11-14lb springs to see what I liked. I tested these individually in both guns and was surprised to find that I liked the same weights in both guns since one has fairly radical slide cuts and one has none. This was with 180gr ammo at 172 power factor.

In my .45 SS gun, I stuck with the 17lb hammer spring (I think, could be a 19 as I don't shoot it much) and a 14lb recoil spring for 230gr ammo at about 174 power factor.

  3. Gorilla brand duct tape, while expensive, is really good at anchoring down raised fault lines. We usually use 2-3 strips for every 5-6 foot stick (targets sticks serve double duty). For fixed size shooting boxes, we use PVC piping and joints which are getting pretty beat up, although they have been in use for 3+ years.

  4. Is there a reason Dillon didn't put a threaded hole in the casefeed mount to secure the casefeeder? Mine keeps coming loose and its pulling the threaded boss out of the plastic casefeeder. It hasn't really been an issue, but its starting to move more and more now and I am likely going to have to have Dillon replace it soon.

  5. Will be following this. When my stock of WST dries up I plan on switching because I am already using it as my .40 major powder of choice and want to consolidate to less types if I can.

  6. The factory Maxxtech ammo doesnt even come close to making power factor either. Through a glock 17, it was around 110 to 115 pf. This stuff doesn't belong anywhere near a uspsa range...

  7. I have no idea what your grip looks like, but it could be the cause of #2 and #3. If your grip is high, you might bump the slide lock under recoil which could either lock the slide back prematurely or keep the slide lock from engaging when it should.
I personally have given up on the slide locking back on empty [emoji14]

  8. Does anybody know what size spring Zev uses for their trigger safety, amd where to get one? Mine has failed (broken into pieces), and Zev wants $50 to swap the whole trigger bar since I am passed their warranty. Due to liability issues they won't send just the spring, which I don't really blame them.

  9. 15+ years and countless cases, crimped or not. Then a couple weeks ago a .223 case flipped out of the shell holder into the path on the downstroke and the pin broke.

Any other time I had foreign object or berdan case the pin just backed out.

Do you think the press timing is just a little off or the pin is not exactly centered in the collet so you're not centered up on the primer?

I am not sure whether the timing is off, but I don't think so. When the pins bend and not break, the pin catches the shoulder of the case and u turns through the shoulder. I'm starting to think that it really is time to get the press rebuilt and tightened up.

  10. Lee will replace them for free. I resolved these issues by doing the following: Ensure the press is adjusted properly at the case insert to fully place the cases into the shell plate slot. Center the Lee decap die in the tool head bore by loosening the lock ring, place a deprimed case at station one, lift the ram until the pin goes through the primer flash hole. Then lock the die down. Lastly make sure your press is well lubed, especially the zerk grease points. You will be amazed how much better your feel is and just the slightest amount of unusually high resistance can be felt. This will help you stop and assess quicker before bending or breaking pins. I literally just last night deprimed my 5000 case since my last pin bent/broke and that i believe was just due to wear.

That brings up a good point... I have been meaning to send my press into Dillon to be rebuilt. Maybe the time has finally come.

  11. I was stationed at Goodfellow a few years ago before I was introduced to shooting competitions, but it seems that San Angelo gun club is now putting on USPSA matches. I don't know anything about EIC, but if uspsa is something that you are still interested in, check with them. The range definitely has the facilities to put on a good match.
I do recommend finding an off-base storage solution though, because I had several less than pleasant dealings with the armory. Maybe it is being run better now, but that would surprise me.
