  1. Your 4 port rib is probably much shorter than the KKM rib. What I have seen from KKM is a full length rib, so a refit might be possible.
  2. Just spoke to the guys at KKM. They are committed to their hybrid barrel as an exclusive through Shooters Connection. Still tooling up to meet demand. Per my measurements, the rib on the KKM is + 0.010 compared to my schuemann's so a slide could be refit. As far as Al @ Schuemann - totally off the radar. Yes, there is the difference in the back end of the rib between the two that has to be accommodated in the slide refit.
  3. Stone off the high spots so the slide runs smooth. Don't worry about appearance and divots. They help retain gun oil. A perfectly smooth as glass bearing surface is NOT the most desirable. Go over to practical machinist forum and search for "scraping". Try to avoid the lapping compound approach as it will remove material where you don't want to remove it.
  4. Yes, my Schuemann barreled guns are all exceptional. Problem is 38S is getting more and more expensive to shoot. I stay pretty busy converting old 38S open guns to 9 major. Hence the issue with Schuemann being out of production.
  5. Frog, it looks like you handle a file pretty well. Hand filing the dovetail should be within your capabilities. Especially if your buddy can mill a dovetail pocket in a piece of scrap or the slide to use as a fitting reference. You can use a prick punch to raise a surface if the fit is loose, too. Hell, lathes were originally made with chisels and files and reference surfaces.
  6. Just curious if anyone has had contact with Schuemann. I had an email last fall from Mike saying he had sold the operation and that it was in the process of moving. He said to give them a month or so and try emailing them. So far I'm not getting any responses. Currently I have a 38S open gun with a schuemann in it and the owner wants to convert it to 9 major. Thanks
  7. Thanks ZZT, I was thinking of a 4.5" Slide with a government length recoil system. This could get me into schuemann's barrel inventory of a 5" ribbed barrel that I could cut back and thread for a bull comp. I'm stubbornly clinging to the idea of an island barrel for future poppels. I've decided to stay with 40 at this time. Just not worth the change in caliber for now.
  8. Fool around with different bullet shapes. Something with more of a shoulder that contacts the feed ramp higher would be my guess. Feed ramp adjustment or longer COL might help too. Try to simulate the failure with dummy rounds and take a very very close look at what's going on at the bullet/feed ramp. That should tell the story.
  9. Bumping this with a new question. What's the current wisdom on shorty Open Guns vs the standard 5" or 5.5"? Building a shorty along the lines of the DVC Steel might be interesting. All opinions welcome. Thanks
  10. Nose diving b/c the front of the round is not supported as well by the feed ramp would be my bet. Especially when the mag is completely topped up causing drag at the feed lips. I stay away from conicals in all my 1911/2011 patterns. Good Luck
  11. I have about 15K rounds this year behind a DPP and 3-4 x per week dry fire and I'm finally getting comfortable with the delta. For a long time the sight picture seemed too busy and took a little bit more time for the brain to process it. If I had it to do over, def a round dot.
  12. Looking at the HP Precision Delta's, they appear to be conical. So they likely have a narrower shoulder and are hitting the feed ramp further up the bullet. Hold the two load up with the HP in front of the RN. I bet you can see the RN from behind the HP. If you can tolerate a longer OAL, that might help. Or..... Have you tried RMR's HPs. Very popular around here.
  13. Will do Rishii, its very hit or miss right now. I just bought a commander length from stock no problem. So it the shortage looks to be limited to the barrels for open gun builds.
  14. "You have a much clear view of the target for the second shot. Another plus is he cuts the ports way forward, so if you want to add poppels later, you can add them in the comp. I put two 3/16" poppels in a V2 config. " Nice Pistol! And that's exactly what I was looking for - putting the poppels in the comp. What I saw with poppels on DVC guns reminded me of fire cracking. And yeah, I hear yuh on comps breaking loose. It's PITA Appreciate the input a ton.
  15. I know it's hit or miss on these Mike. If I decide to go with a Schuemann, I can go on a waiting list since this is for a future build. Appreciate the lead on KKM and SVI island barrels.
  16. Thanks ZZT, I had an idea that the 40 would be a forgiving path, so I chose it for my first open build. I haven't added any poppels to it at this point and probably won't with this gun. I wouldn't hesitate to build another 40. So far the only downside I have experienced is 25 rounds vs 28 in the big stick. At my shooting level, that isn't a big deal. I have seen 9 major poppel holes develop cracks in DVC guns and that's where my interest in the Schuemann barrel came from. If I were expecting to use poppels, I would lean toward a barrel with a rib in order to have more "meat" for the holes. If I recall correctly, my slide weighs 11 oz machined on a manual mill. BTW, I'm running Bob's TC2 right now. Have you come across anything better for a 40 comp?
  17. Thanks for that. I didn't realize USPSA had a bullet min for 9 major. I'll check it out So to extend the discussion on bullet weights, the underlying question is twist. I think this only matters in the Schuemann world where Mike offers different rates. How are you guys finding 115's and 124's running in 1:16 twist rates? Or would a 1:24 gain twist or even a 1:32 constant twist make more sense? HP Jack, yeah, especially in 40 I had to go with lighter bullets to make gas for the comp. I fiddled with 135's for a little bit, but the dot didn't track as well as the 155's.
  18. Thanks, I appreciate any and all feedback. I would likely experiment with anything from 88 gr JHP 380's all the way to 147gr. The idea is not to be barrel twist limited by focusing on the light bullets only. My current load for 40 is MG 155JHP on top of Major Pistol in the 10 grain range, 1.185 oal
  19. I'm starting to organize my thoughts for building a new open gun this fall/winter and would like some opinions on the following options. This is for a 9mm Major gun and I'm a B shooter 1. 5" Threaded Schuemann Barrel with up to 4 Hybricomp ports machined as needed plus a external comp 2. 5" Standard Barrel (Nowlin or Barsto) Barrel threaded with cone comp 3. 6" Tribrid Schuemann no comp, long slide, no external comp, (would like to hear about drawbacks of long slide recoil system if any, too) I'm intrigued with the Schuemann ported barrels based on the 4.25" Single stack I'm finishing and would like to incorporate one in an open gun. Considering 147 grain 9mm major loads I'm currently shooting a 5" cone comped 40 open gun Thanks
  20. "The trick is to avoid penalties and Deltas (or TOO many Charlies) while still shooting at a very fast pace, and that’s what separates the A through GM shooter from your average B-class guy." Yup, when I finish a club match with nothing but A and higher shooters above me shooting around 2:1 A's to C's and D's, M's and penalties are at a minimum, I've shot up to my capabilities. When I haven't, it usually shows up in the D's M's and No-Shoots, indicating I over ran my sight picture. Thanks again
  21. I don't think I explained my approach. When shooting, I am always focused on the A-Zone and working to manage recoil and dot. I'm working past the whole blast two shots at the brown bad habit. But when I evaluate my performance at the end of the match, a success for me is minimizing D's and M's and keeping my stage times down doing it. After a typical club match, I'm usually in the high points group of shooters that fall in the second tier overall.. I notice however that the couple of GM's and M's that shoot regularly have lower points than us. They win by accepting some A-C or C-C targets instead of all A-A targets and run stage times 5-8 seconds faster than the next tier of shooters. The ideal would be all A's and screaming times, but that is the result of a long term commitment to improve. I'm just starting the path up the mountain and movement and time are bigger areas of opportunity. My practical marksmanship is going to take some temporary hits along the way as I'm learning things like shooting on the move and so on. But trigger time and live fire practice should bring my hits back up acceptable over time. I'm not trying to be a newb know it all. But I hear the same bad advice all the time. "Slow down and get your hits"......it should be "go as fast as you can and learn to get your points doing it". Thanks for the input.
  22. I tend to look at it more from the bottom up. I try to limit my speed just enough to Keep the D's and M's to a minimum.
  23. I see probably 1 in 4 shooters running salomons among south and south west Florida practical shooters. They do a good job in our sand/mud/brass/crushed shell
  24. Trash talking squad members that aren't pulling their weight pasting and resetting is about all I see. And that is richly deserved imoh.
  25. As I recall, I only needed to do some minor fitting of the mechanism to get the Everglades MRH to lock. Not a big deal if you're handy. Re. the Cheely E2, At least one open shooter gives my grip a feel up at every match. And for the bean counters, Cheely includes the mag release and mag well. Compared to the cost of a plastic grip, mag well, and mag catch, it's really not a big step up in money for a build.
