  1. I shoot the 200 grain RN from Bayou. I really like them. They don't lead, don't smoke much and they are consistent, add great customer service and fast shipping to the list.

  2. The e book works for me.

As far as keeping track of drills and what not, I use a paper notebook. Write down my plan for the session then record time and points for each drill. I keep notes in there if I try different things, an example would be "push more speed over hits", this gives me something to review when I get back home. I figure hit factors for my drills and see if it was beneficial.

I also keep a performance journal (separate from my range notes).

  3. Yakima rifle and pistol association (YRPA) shoots at Sun Valley shooting park (in Moxee) on the 1st Saturday if every month.

Ephrata shoots on the 2nd Saturday and I believe Rattlesnake(Benton City) is shooting 3rd Saturday.

All are great matches and great clubs/ranges.

Yrpa shoots a "Steel Classic" every year around June.

Ephrata holds the "Washington state championship" in June usually as well.

  4. I wanted to learn more about these pistols so I took Bob Rodgers RYO class. We built a gun in a week, learned more than I ever thought I would about the 1911s.

The class wasn't cheap counting tools and travel expenses, but the knowledge I gained is priceless. It also makes it nice now when I am building a few more pistols, I will be money ahead rather than buying custom pistols, and I have the satisfaction of doing it myself.

  5. I don't see what the problem with an app is for dry fire, just need 2 beeps. I like the app because I can turn the volume down and not have my timer going off a bunch of times while my wife is trying to watch tv in the other room.

I use a real timer for live fire.

  6. I downloaded an app called "dry fire timer" it lets you enter drills, pars and reps. I have all the drills from the book in there. Most are set for 5 reps.

This has helped speed up my session a lot. No messing around with changing a par and starting a timer every rep.

I will stick to 5 or 10 reps per drill unless I have issues, then I will figure out why I have issues and work through it. On the same note, if a drill is going really good I carry on a few extra reps to make myself feel good.

  7. When I first built my pistol I had issues with all my McCormick mags, 8 and 10 rounders. They would not drop free but wilsons would. The McCormick mags were a little wider at the feed lips, I squeezed them in a Kurt vice and it fixed the issue for a little bit. I ended up just switching to all Wilson ETM mags.

  8. Towards the back of the book there are "programs". Find which one you fit into and try the sections he recommends.

I have page numbers written down that I'm going to do that night. I plan out 4-6 weeks with each program for what I want to work on. This saves a lot of time, I just look at what I have planned and stick to it.

I also end up going through almost the whole book each week. Just working different drills each night, 6 days a week.

  9. A friend of mine has an Atlas built 6" .40 with a bushing barrel and PT grip. The gun is awesome all the way around.

I have shot it and a Cheely 6", they are both nice pistols. If I had to choose I would take the Atlas build.

  10. Here's my first build (with help from Bob Rodgers and his RYO class), Caspian slide/frame, Kart barrel, Wilson, Ed Brown, a Colt internals.

I've had this since May, I'm at 3,300 or so rounds and I have yet to have a malfunction.

Nice. I love the look of a clean slide - no roll marks, branding, FCS or other crap. Its just........clean. Very nice build.

Thank you. I have been shooting and dry firing this pistol A LOT, It hasn't missed a beat.

    It carries pretty good too.

  11. I personally like to be as prepared as possible for the stage. I show up early, walk stages, use my 5 minutes then rehearse in my head until I'm up. It also takes a little extra planning shooting SS.

I don't think about results, my scores or who else is shooting, just focus on the process of executing my stage plan.
