    Magpul question

I got 1 of the 21rd 140mm magpuls, and while I like a lot of other magpul stuff I can’t really back the Glock mags. One is a small sample of course, but after it dropped in some fine gravel/almost sand 1 time at a match, I could not get it to run properly again. Took it apart multiple times and cleaned it as well as I could but it just wasn’t having it. YMMV of course but after that I’ve been sticking to factory.
  2. So a little while back I was thinking about getting into Open, then realized I'm way too poor for that. Ended up getting a performance center m&p pro core thnking that I could shoot open in local steel matches, and production / carry optics for uspsa. I then realized that the whole 'ported glocks are ok with a non-ported barrel' doesn't apply across the board. Checked the production gun list this am to see if I needed to start figuring out what I'm going to do, and the ported M&Ps have been added to the production list and are approved for Production and CO when used with a non-ported barrel. Just thought I'd throw that out there, as I seemed to find a lot of miss-information when I originally researched the topic.
  3. I've actually been on the other side of the situation. I frequented a local shooting range for a number of years, and became friends with all the employees and the owner. I walked into the range office one day to find the clerk had a 1911 pointed directly at me! There was a surveillance camera system, and he had seen me coming in from the parking lot. Seems he thought it would be funny to surprise me like that. The first thing I did was instantly create a vacuum in the room by sucking all the available oxygen into my butt. After that, I came totally unglued. I almost went over the counter at him. His response was “But I made sure it wasn’t loaded.” He honestly didn’t seem to understand why that did not make it okay. To this day I vividly remember how HUGE the muzzle was from that perspective. "The first thing I did was instantly create a vacuum in the room by sucking all the available oxygen into my butt" I just almost died laughing thanks for that wonderful sentence. I've been slowly working my way through this thread thinking that my shops are generally pretty good, as I haven't experienced anything quite like most of these. Then I went to a local indoor range yesterday and had a funny one. Guy in a bay next to me asks what I was shooting, (I think after already seeing it was a sig 229) and wants to show me his fancy Sigs. I realize he has an x5 and wants me to try it, Ok rad. He's showing me the gun and points to his rear sight, a big target style one, blacked out no dots or anything and says "See I don't have a rear sight, I just use front sight, center of mass" . I couldn't bring myself to say anything so I just said "Oh, cool" and enjoyed a few rounds through the x5. I had no idea that if you didn't have markings on your rear sight it's apparently useless and doesn't even count as a sight. So I guess if you shoot a blacked-out rear you can start bragging to all your friends about how rear sights are for suckers and you're way to good for that nonsense.
  4. Come on Jack - you know what will happen Yeah, so that happened. Haha I tried out Foxbat's SVI the other day, they're amazing. It's crazy how loud, fast etc they are, yet the recoil is basically non-existant, took a little bit to get used to but man are they fun. Going to try out as many more as I can but I think open is in my future. I also learned you should keep your thumb nice and flat on the safety if there's a slide racker, mine snuck upwards a couple times and got smacked, didn't really hurt, or cause any malfunctions but its somewhat surprising when that happens haha I could see it hurting a bit if you really got wild with your grip.
  5. Thanks for the input everyone! Definitely gives me more to think about, and I already feel more informed about what I might be getting myself into. I'm going to be taking full advantage of every opportunity to try out Open setups and go from there, and I'll keep posting about my findings and decision making process for sure. Thanks again to the guys who offered to let me shoot, looking forward to shooting with you guys and actually seeing what its all about!
  6. Hey everyone, So I started my competitive shooting adventure this summer by shooting some steel matches in the PA Steel League, and am hopefully going to get into some USPSA soon as well. I've been shooting production with my Sig 229, but am contemplating saving for an open gun over the winter and moving into Open next year. I've been doing a lot of reading here on the forums about open, and especially related to eyesight. I have a pretty serious astigmatism, on top of being right handed and VERY, VERY left-eye dominant. While I understand that I will get better at tracking the sights the more I practice, the consensus seems to be that shooting with a dot minimizes the gap between those with good eyesight and those of us with crap eyesight. It also seems that switching back and forth between different gear and guns frequently will make it harder to progress quickly. I originally thought open was something I might try in the future when I have a lot more matches under my belt, but I'm thinking that it might be a good idea to just go for it. I don't reload yet, but I will be getting into that soon as well, but for now I've been looking at the Steelmaster, and also the CZ Czechmate. While I think I can manage so save enough for an open gun, I won't be able to get two, so I'd like to have something that can pull double duty for steel and USPSA. I'm totally fine with just shooting minor in USPSA for a while as I get started both in that game and reloading, but from what I've read, it seems like the Steelmaster will run fine with major loads (once I have some reloading experience) with just a spring swap, and I believe you can make the CZ run with either as well without too much trouble, although there is less info out there on it than the STI. So i guess there's a couple questions, will open be as awesome as I think it will for my useless eyes? And am I looking at reasonable guns to start? I have never shot an open gun before, so if anyone has either of those guns (or really any 2011) within a few hours of Philly, would you be willing to meet up somewhere and let me try it out to help with this expensive decision? Thanks guys, this forum has been a wealth of information for a new guy to the competitive shooting!
  7. I've been thinking about this lately as well, and I think I'm thinking along the same lines as Bkreutz. I'm right handed and extremely left eye dominant, and am faster and with better hits left to right. I think even though my right eye sucks, the fact that the gun isn't in front of it helps me transition to the next target easier. When going right to left, my good eye has to track the sights and find the next plate, all with the gun up in front of it, so my right eye is basically useless going that direction. I think that's why I'm slower that way so definitely trying to practice to bring that speed up. I've only shot three matches, but I've noticed that going left to right when I can, even if that leaves a big / weird / or extra transition seems to be quicker for me at this point.
  8. Thanks guys, Lots of good resources here I really appreciate it! So it looks like I got into the Topton Steel match for tomorrow's morning session! If anyone else is going to be there I have big black frame glasses, a black and white Indianapolis Motor Speedway hat and a sig 229, definitely come say hi and I'll accept any advice on how to not blow it. Looking forward to meeting you guys and shooting my first match, a little nervous already but just gonna try to stay mellow and have fun out there. Have a good weekend everyone and maybe I'll see you tomorrow blacklab!
  9. Hey everyone! My name is Tyler, but most of my friends call me Lazer (not the worst nickname I could ask for haha, take your pick). I recently moved to Philly from Brooklyn, and can't even describe how psyched I am to be in a gun-friendly state since I have gotten much more into shooting over the past few years. I am very interested in starting to shoot some USPSA matches, and just got my sig 229 transferred from family in CA so I'm more or less ready to get out there and shoot. I've been lurking for a while and have already learned a ton from this forum, it seems like this is a really amazing group of people with extensive knowledge of the action shooting sports and who are excited to share with us newbies, so before I even ask you guys a bunch of questions, thanks! So far I've just been shooting at square indoor ranges, doing some dry fire/draw practice at home, and when I visit family in CA we have a spot we can run and gun, but that's only once or twice a year. I've been looking for clubs in the area and found a few that have matches/ one that looks like they will let you set up steel and practice, but due to scheduling it will be a while before I can get into one. I would love to get in some live fire practice with drawing and moving in a match-like environment, so if anyone in the Philly area has suggestions of where to shoot, or the best club or clubs to try to join, I'd love to hear it! I work Tues-Sat so any local Sunday matches would also be awesome to learn about. Looking forward to getting to know you guys and hopefully shoot a couple matches this year! Cheers, Laze
