  1. Gore-Tex is too slow and Frog Togs are too heavy and don't breath well.
  2. Look at a Patagonia Catalog. I use one of their resistant shells designed for cross country skiing, cycling, etc. They are breathable, light weight and will keep you dry in anything but a torrential downpour that last for hours. Mine fold up small enough to put in a jacket pocket. I also have a heavier Columbia OmniDry waterproof, breathable jacket with hood that I use when I can take it off to shoot. If it is raining hard I keep the Patagonia on. It doesn't interfere with movements.
  3. I only shoot pistols so far, but I do the same. When I'm one step from the box I bring the gun up into firing position, but my finger is outside the trigger until my right foot hits the ground. I do look where I am going up until the last step, because I've seen too many stumbles.
  4. There is a difference between aiming and pointing. While you may be pointing the gun at the right array while moving, you aren't aiming. You are watching where your feet are going. At every LII and LIII match I've shot, the MD emphasizes this at the match briefing and tells the ROs to watch out for it. 8.1.1.7 is specific. USPSA carves out an exemption to avoid a judgement call. They didn't always. SCSA does not.
  5. That's what I'm going to do as soon as I sell the BSF barrel.
  6. I'm going with the LLW for just the reason the OP listed. Also, it will be softer recoil. The 115 @ 950 109PF load I plan to use gains 250fps in a 16" barrel.
  7. I more interested in transition speed for Steel Challenge. It will also help if I decide to use it for USPSA. I kind of doubt it, because I love Open so much. I need a 16+" barrel, because it is legal everywhere and I don't need a stamp.. I'm going with the WilandUSA LLW barrel. Although it weighs 15 oz., the weight is concentrated near the receiver. The barrel is 5.5", so I don't get the increased velocity (and recoil) I'd get with a 16" barrel. Since there is no comp, I can shoot less expensive coated bullets without worrying about crudding up the comp. I've tried 19 oz. pencil barrels. They swing slow. I was going to go with a BSF carbon sleeve barrel at 16 oz., but that is not much of an improvement. The Polar Moment is not as good as the LLW. There are two things that decided me on the LLW. The first was my newest Open gun. It is heavy with a SS grip. Everyone said the transitions would be slower than with my lighter poly grip guns. I set the gun up so it balances on my left index finger, so really all the weight is between my hands. I'm faster with this gun than I was with the others. Why? It doesn't feel muzzle heavy. Now my other guns feel like I'm swinging a log. The second was how much faster my transitions were with my full race, light Buckmark over the 1911 with conversion I have been shooting. So my recommendation would be one of the ultra light barrels you mentioned. I went with the LLW because the rifled barrel is longer and IMO the build is better. FWIW, I like the concept so much I have an LLW 22 11 oz. barrel on the way for my RFRO gun.
  8. Everglades is a 124 at about 173PF. It works well and doesn't break the bank.
  9. Absolutely. None. There is no shooting involved. I do those things to make sure the RO dosn't have to even come close to making a judgement call. As far as I'm concerned, it is 'best practices'. I RO A LOT, and appreciate that in a shooter.. SCSA is easy. ROing USPSA is a lot tougher. There are a lot more rules, and a lot more judgement calls.
  10. After talking with them this morning, I decided to go the same way. I ordered the 22 barrel for a build I'm assembling. I had planned to do the same for the PCC. However, the one I want is only sold with a barrel and comp. If I can get it with the Lead Star 16" pencil barrel and comp, I'll do it and swap out the barrels. Unfortunately, the only ones coming in have the BSF 16.1" barrel and comp. That's $449 for the barrel and $79 for the comp. I'll have to think about that.
  11. I was going to respond to several of your points, but you are too worked up about this. Think of it as avoiding a judgement call. Sweeping any part of your body except the lower extremities while holstering is a DQ. Even then, the safety must be on and the finger clearly outside the trigger. There is no judgement involved. The RO doesn't have to think about extenuating circumstances.. It's the rule. It's a DQ. USPSA rules apply unless specifically countermanded by an SCSA rule. Uncasing your gun an placing it on the table is a very, very bad practice that could have consequences other than sweeping. Suppose you drop a mag and go to pick it up. You are farther than 3' from the gun, so DQ. BTW, I have my holster set up so that no part of my body is swept while holstering and unholstering. In SCSA I do not unzip a case past the muzzle, so there is no way I can sweep myself when uncasing or casing unless I do something really stupid.
  12. I'll second JEM Guns frames. Vastly superior to the STIs I used.
  13. This applies only if you are planning on using a full size C-More like the Slideride. It is big and tapered cases have trouble ejecting under it. It can be done, but most times an offset frame mount is required. For straight walled cases like 38SC and 40sw, that is not the case. The Serindipity is a bod idea. Too flimsy. If you like the RTS2, go with A Cheely Custom frame mount. They are already set at the correct angle so you don't max out your adjustments.
  14. I have a different take on this. First of all it is your gun and comp configuration that determines what the best bullet weight is. The best load uses a bullet weight and powder that works the poppels and comp to the fullest, and has little or no gas jetting out the front of the comp. I shoot 9 major out of a 5" gun with two 3/16" poppels and a 3-chamber comp. I shoot 115 JHPs @ 168PF with and SD of 4.9. Loaded to 9x21 lengths (1.161" OAL), pressures are not over +P+ with Major Pistol or 3N38. I use MP, because it is denser than 3N38 and loads better. If I could buy fully processed SC brass for the 4 cents I pay for 9mm, I'd be shooting that. When you move up in case capacity, SC or 9x23 you have a lot more options. You can use 3N38 effectively. You can produce more gas, so you can run more poppels and more comp ports. You can get the gun to shoot flat and soft. That is the reason you go for larger case capacity. If you are not going to take advantage of it, you are better off with 9 major. If you plan on running a frame mounted, vertical Slideride, you want a straight walled case. So SC. If I were willing to buy new Starline and leave it on the ground, that would be my choice.
  15. Marvel Precision sells widebody poly mags for $51.
  16. I'm always amazed by the 'I never had a problem' comments. I'm sure they are accurate, but I don't know anyone who says that. They all complain about buildup in the comp. One friend, a sponsored shooter, use Blue Bullets in his Open gun. His comp crudded up. He switched to Montana Gold JHPs and his comp now stays clean. The only manufacturer who doesn't hem and haw when you try to nail them down about leading and buildup is Egglestom Munitions. Their pricing is so close to good JHPs, why bother.
  17. I don't see the benefit. You can already buy 13oz. 16.1" barrels. Why go to great lengths to save one or two ounces. That being said, I can see this in PCC. With a 6" to 10" barrel you can use the same load you use in your CO, Production or Limited minor gun and minimize recoil.
  18. The difference is the trigger is accessible. You cannot get to it while the gun is in the case. You can when it is lying on the table. Therefore, the DQ. If your hand is on the gun while inside the case and you sweep- DQ. Reason? The trigger is accessible.
  19. There is only a $4 difference per 2000 between PD 115 FMJ and JHP, and only $2 difference between their 124 FMJ and the JHP. I'd gladly pay a larger Delta not to have to clean my comp. Geez! 8000 JHPs through my new Open gun so far this year and I can still see the machining marks in the bottoms of the comp chambers.
  20. +1. After Make Ready you are IN the COF. ICHDH ends the COF. 8.1.1.6 is clear and specific No sweeping during the COF. It also says you cannot sweep yourself or anyone else with a cased gun. How much clearer can you make it?
  21. MidSouth Shooters Supply. They often have them on sale for $280/3000 bulk.
  22. I just tried Precision Delta 115s. They are not quite as accurate as the Hornady HAPs I had been using, but the difference is very small. I just finished my first 2000. I'll be ordering them again. My only complaint is their packing. It's built to withstand a nuclear blast, and it's a pain to open.
  23. Rubbish. The plated bullets will shoot just fine. You'll find the Rainiers a little faster than the X-Treme, and more accurate. If you were at 170~172PF with your coated bullet, you'll be around the same or slightly lower with the plated. You'll still be comfortably in major territory. I used both brands for years. They don't tumble and they are accurate. The Rainiers were as accurate as JHPs in my guns.
  24. Precision warns not to use their bullets in compensated guns. They get flame cut and lead the comp badly. I'd suggest you sell the coated bullets you have and buy JHPs. Your comp and your bullet feeder will appreciate it. If you just have to use them, load them for minor and buy JHPs for major. The only coated bullet maker that I'm aware of that doesn't hem and haw about using their bullets for Open is Eggleston Munitions. Why bother? For about the same price you can buy JHPs and be done with it.
  25. I have to say this thread has inspired me to consider RFRO. I had briefly considered it before, but dismissed it. Now I'm looking at a Magnum Research Switchbolt Tactical Black Rifle. 4.0 lbs., even thought the reviews say 3 lb. 8 oz. with a Kidd single stage trigger. I'm also looking at a Lead Star arms Prime PCC. So if I get both I can shoot RFRP and RFPO one week and PCC and Open the next. Sounds like a plan.
