  1. The linked video explains what I wanted. Maybe we'll get there someday. This was posted a few weeks before the BOD meeting. Yes, I am speaking to a broad audience that may not be shooting competition yet, so I feel the need to bring them up to speed. You can fast forward a few minutes. I also later thought that full cap mags would not be good. Allowing full cap mags could result in production shooters using their regular iron sighted Prod guns in CO, just so they would not have to reload. I think this forces CO to be a 10 round division. Having said that, you can't have a major/minor 10-round division b/c minor would not be competitive, and we don't want that. Result is I think this has to be a 10-round minor division, which is what we got. Personally I'm excited about trying it out, even if what we got was basically "Production Optics."

    Limited G35

Tungsten because it was what I decided to get 10 years ago and I'm still using it. I'd buy SS for my next Glock because I don't think it will matter much, and my next Glock will be an open gun so I'll have a comp working for me. Get all of those springs and try them out. See what works for you. I shot with a guy last weekend that said he was running a 12 in his G35. Sounded a bit light to me. Too much bashing and you'll break trigger pins. I have not shot freedom munitions, so cannot comment, but if their PF is around 170 you should be good to go. Definitely start reloading when you can. Stick with the stock barrel for now. Just know that if you do get an aftermarket at some point, you will have to re-zero your sights. I switched back to my factory barrel as an experiment for a match and I couldn't hit crap at 35 yards. Don't worry too much about the trigger. If you have one that you like, go with it. I have pretravel and overtravel screws in my ejector housing and a Lone Wolf connector. Polished parts and nothing else really fancy right now. Running a stock trigger bar/shoe.

    Limited G35

That list looks good to me. I really like my extra heavy Ice magwell. I think that's a good investment. Get the mags to 140mm anyway you want Get the sights you like. SS recoil rod is good, but I run tungsten. 15 lb spring would be maximum. I cut a few coils off my 15 lb ISMI. Trigger. Yeah, personal preference. I have a BarSto in mine. I've had good experiences with several KKM's in STI's and Glocks. Stipple job is good to have. Mine was done by boresight solutions by the previous owner. I like the finer stipple jobs and undercut trigger guard.
  4. I was about to start a thread on this... I do not/ Cannot reload (landlord) will plain jane factory .40 from wally world run the comp? I would not recommend going .40 open if you cannot reload. You will spend a lot of money to get setup and then the ammo might be a coin toss whether it will work or not. If I could only buy factory and wanted to shoot open, I'd probably be shooting 9mm minor pf.
  5. I am a fan of the GRx die from Redding. It's an extra step on the single stage, but zero ammo problems since I started using it at least 5 years ago. I load on a Square Deal, so I don't have any other options.
  6. I love the Mitchell right side mag catch. I sold all of my STI stuff, but I still have three of these just in case I get back into the platform someday (and I'm sure I will).
  7. Several years ago I ran into a guy with the member number S1. S is for "sponsor". Not sure what his story is. He is the only member with the "S" prefix. This was at a range north of the old Sedro Wolley USPSA HQ.
  8. Take the bare slide to Fastenal and they'll help you find the right screw. Prob 6-40? Just a SWAG (scientific wild ass guess).
  9. G22 is my vote. I'm working on building one now, but I want the dot on the slide for various reasons. It'll just be for fun. I'm not ever going to be a contender to win an Area or Nationals match. I think the G35 is too long once you add a comp.
  10. This is what I was thinking. Power Pistol burns very hot in my experience. I used it in my .40 open gun. It is probably vaporizing the coating off the bayou bullets. You generally don't want to run moly/poly coated bullets or exposed lead base bullets in Open division.
  11. Thanks to Wilson for driving the prices up! I was able to sell my used Elite II last fall turned that cash into Oakley Rx glasses, Rudy Rx Shooting Kit, and an M&P Shield!
  12. Ace Hardware, Fastenal, any other fastener store local to you.
  13. The 40 Open thread I started shows that everyone is running something a little different, so there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to hand loading. Shooting .40 Open in the past, I have proved that you can have too much gas volume. I settled on Rainier Ballistics 135gr bullets and drove them to 1275-1300 fps with no problems. When using Silhouette, there was too much gas volume for my comp. I tested this by firing the gun with the comp 1" from the white side of a cardboard Metric target. Enough gas went out the end of the comp to put a tear in the target. So I figured I needed less gas volume, but more gas pressure to get all the gas venting out the comp before the bullet left the end. I went up the burn rate chart and settled on Power Pistol back in the day. Doing this same test with the target 1 inch away, I got a nice clean hole with just some speckles of powder around it and no tearing of the target. This is as ideal as it gets. I am hoping to try some more 40 Open shooting within the next year. I plan to work up a load using CFE Pistol and the Rainier 135gr bullets. Do not listen to anyone that says the 40 does not make enough gas to work the comp. They just haven't done enough experimentation. I worked on it off and on for a year and a half before I settled on a load. I tried 5 different bullet weights and 3 different powders with many different charge weights. Like I said above, there is no one-size-fits-all and you're kind of on your own to experiment, but it can work! I also feel that mag capacity is a non-issue unless the round count for a stage is 26-29 rounds. That's the only time you're reloading and the 9mm/.38's may not. The 22-round .40 cal Glock mag with Taylor Freelance +3 is a great way to get a 170mm mag. Here are a couple of my videos showing how flat my old gun shot. https://youtu.be/pHne_u4jfaM https://youtu.be/uJTX_ed7ajs
  14. If you are able to get Hodgdon CFE Pistol, look up their load data. If you pick a 135 gr .40 cal bullet, their STARTING load of 8.0 grains will make major at 1300 fps. Loaded to 1.125" COL and tested out of a 4" barrel. I haven't used this load, but I plan to in the future. Look up the "40 Open" thread. I have probably listed my old STI load in there somewhere. I used to use Power Pistol with the 135gr bullet. I never had any problem driving Rainier Ballistics 135's that fast. Actually my loads were running about 1275 fps.
  15. I actually got to try the RM05, Dual Illuminated 9 moa green dot yesterday. I think it's fine! Should work on a Glock open gun. This was mounted on a G19 slide, low mounted by Suarez. I shot it at an indoor range and I was able to vary the amount of light above my head, and hence, shining on the RMR.
  16. I see you have the dual illuminated RMR. Which dot size, shape and color did you go with? Is it bright enough for USPSA style shooting in sunny, cloudy, or mixed conditions (shaded spots)? Looks good. Thanks.
  17. I compete with a tricked out G35 for Limited division. The only other .40 cal Glock I have is a stock G23. I always bring it as a last-ditch just in case backup gun. I don't expect that I'll have a failure that I'll need it for. I keep a lot of spare parts in my range bag.
  18. I shot with Robin Taylor as promised on page one of this thread. Shooting the sight block was interesting. I ran his top end on my frame. He had stock Glock sights on it, which I've never used in a match before. Drawing the longer gun from my kydex holster was not as smooth as my regular G35. It was a short match of only 6 stages, so I did not have a lot of time to play with it. I did not shoot any groups before competing, so I wasn't really sure where the shots would land. I don't recall if I had the same problem with the G24 that I used to have. Of course, on our first stage there was a Texas star, but I cleaned it in 6 shots. The other thing I noticed immediately was that my brass was hitting the top of my head. Probably due to the factory weight recoil spring that Robin mentioned above. Shots were accurate and the slide cycled much faster than a stock G24C slide, which I prefer. For me, the benefit over a G22 is the longer sight radius and increased velocity of the longer barrel without the sluggish slide of the G24. I don't think I'm good enough to realize the benefit of the "sight tracker" effect. Overall, I really liked the sight block. If I had a G22, I would seriously consider getting this product. Look for my match footage on Power Factor Show in a couple of weeks.
  19. Sad to hear about the Dual Illuminated RMR. If I ever build another open gun, I was thinking slide mounted RMR. Is there anything similar that offers a battery powered GREEN dot?
  20. Thanks for posting that. I think you win the contest for best looking 40 open gun!
  21. It is legal for Limited or L10. Almost anything is legal in Limited or L10 now except for comps, optics and mags longer than 141.25mm. That's me in the video up there, and I will be testing this for Power Factor Show tomorrow at a Level 1 match. Stay tuned for my impressions. BTW: CDNN Sports has police trade in Glock 22's for $325 this weekend. I'm sure there will be more as departments are going back to the 9mm, from what I've read on the internet (so it must be true).
  22. Read this again and this line stuck out. If the gun is not cycling, I bet the recoil spring is too heavy. I don't know what open Glock guys are running for springs, but my STI needed a 9 lb spring to run right. Do a search for "40 Open" here on the Open sub-forum. We have a nice little thread going where you can get all kinds of advice.
  23. To hkfooey. The heavier bullet will usually give less felt recoil at the same Power Factor. With the same powder charge, heavier bullets will give more recoil. You need to consult the loading manual, as others have said above. I have experience with .40 Open in an STI, and have been looking into doing it again on the Glock 22 platform. I would start with a 135 grain bullet and look at Alliant Power Pistol or Hodgdon CFE Pistol. Based on Vihtavuori's load data, you cannot make major with N350 and a 135 grain bullet, but you can with the 155 grain Rainier bullet. You might not like the way it feels or how the dot tracks. This is personal preference, but I have tried all bullet weights in a .40 open gun. 135 is what I liked best, and that is the general consensus as well. Be smart. It would be a shame to hurt yourself or the gun that you have invested so much money in.
  24. Sorry to hear JP doesn't make theirs anymore. I have that one and really like it.
