  1. Initially I planned to go with slide mounted because I just wanted to use my standard kydex holster. (Now I have a Safariland 014 that I got a good deal on.) Then Carry Optics provisional came along and I already had the optic, so I had it installed into the gun I typically use for production, the G23 shown above. Ultimately, I do plan to switch back and forth between Open and CO. I've shot open guns with both frame and slide mounted optics. As long as the gun shoots flat, I don't think there's a difference for me at my skill level. I can find the dot faster with it mounted low, so I like slide mounted better right now.
  2. Yes, this gun is still a CO legal pistol. No illegal mods were made to the slide or frame. I will shoot this for a while and get it tuned up first. Someday I'll build a dedicated Open top end with a G22 slide with all sorts of cuts and put it on my current Limited frame.
  3. Just got it put together. Need to take a few thousandths off the back of the comp because it touches the slide. Then I'll start testing loads and playing with springs. I probably won't have it dialed in until Summer.
  4. Rare, but not the first... Shorty Forty Open Gun! I'm back into the 40 Open club! This is a G23 with a LW threaded barrel and Carver magwell, reduced power recoil assembly and 4 port comp. The 170mm mag is a 22-round factory mag with a Taylor Freelance +3 base pad. I have not fired it yet because the comp touches the slide. I need to have someone take a few thousanths off the back of the comp. Then I get to start testing some loads that I have made up using Rainier Ballistics 135gr FP's. I will be testing Hodgdon CFE Pistol and Alliant Power Pistol. I'd really like to add a thumbrest, but I don't want to do any mods that would make it illegal for Carry Optics. Also, I'm not sure that my Safariland 014 holster has any clearance for a thumbrest. Thanks to TheWacoKid for selling me some of these parts.
  5. Rare, but not the first... Shorty Forty Open Gun! Just for fun, not planning to win any titles. This is my G23 CO gun with a Carver magwell and 4 port comp. No permanent mods that are illegal for CO, so I can go back and forth as I please.
  6. Only 21 in a 9mm mag? That follower is too tall. If they could do 20 in a .40 mag I'd be on it!
  7. G24 is 6". G35 is 5.3".
  8. Gary Natale built my 40 open top end. His comps are here, but the "order" links are not working. May have to call?? I had a No. 5 comp on mine, but also was looking at the No. 3 and 12 if I recall correctly. http://www.gansguns.com/MAINCOMPS.html
  9. Yep. The rear of the chamber which is already behind the mount. The barrel moves rearward nearly 1/4" before unlocking from the slide. It would work fine.
  10. I've decided to try the Shorty Forty concept with my G23 Carry Optics gun. A 4.5" barrel isn't all that different than the 5.0" that I used to run. I'm going to pick up the magwell and barrel from the Waco kid and try it out. Going to get a Carver 4 port comp to go with it I think. For the rest of the year I am going to continue shooting Carry Optics so as to "vote" for keeping it as a permanent division by participating until the next BOD meeting. I have been planning on going open for quite a while, but took a detour down the Carry Optics route when it was announced. I've made 10 rounds each of some test loads already using CFE Pistol and Power Pistol behind Rainier Ballistics 135gr. Not going to win any national titles, but it will be fun!
  11. Dave, your load is probably good. Start playing with recoil spring weights. You might need to go lower than you think, but I've got no experience with the Tanfoglio Gold Team.
  12. I would if I had Gen4 Glocks. They feel good with the med beavertail backstrap.
  13. It's what I've been saying all along. You can easily make too much gas in a .40 open gun, so you need to tune your load. Shooting open is fun. For some of us, doing it in .40 will get us there for much less cost. Most everyone on here is not a contender to win major competitions, but these guns can work and are a lot of fun. See the links below for my input. http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=77956 http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=210801&p=2365605 https://youtu.be/zVDUhUzTUj8?t=7m45s
  14. Sorry for the late response. I was very concerned about the brightness of the dual illuminated RMR based on ONE review here on BE forum. I went for it anyway and I am very happy with it so far. I did shoot from inside of a van at my first match, and the dot was noticeably dimmer than when standing in the open, but it did not hinder my performance. I just noticed it, that's all. I have not shot from inside of a dark house, but when I'm in my own house at night I can easily pick up the dot. It's not too dim at all, but my eyes are also well adjusted to the low light area. https://youtu.be/tnEcfbis-XQ?t=2m14s
  15. So far I am liking my RMR (RM05G). The lens is small, but if you have a consistent grip and index on the gun, the dot will be there when you bring the gun up. Mine was machined into the slide by Grizz Precision and it is plenty low. Just as low as your standard irons would be.
  16. I decided to try my hand at stippling the gun, and I added a front sight to help find the dot faster for when I get a bad grip on the gun. The front sight barely sticks up high enough to be seen through the lens, but once I find the dot it should not distract too badly.
  17. Interesting thought JoeyMac, but I think no one will know unless there has been some experimentation done. A G23 with threaded barrel would give about a 4.5 inch length, not too terribly short. I cut my G23 for an RMR and am playing in Carry Optics currently. My current plans to go to an Open gun involve a G22 which means cutting another slide and getting another optic. I would run it on the frame that I already have setup for Limited with magwell, etc. You've got me thinking though about just getting a barrel and comp for my G23 and going for Open Div. Are there magwells for the compact Glocks?
  18. I have a Konus Sight Pro Atomic (funny name) on a .22 rifle. It's a good optic with 5 brightness settings in both red and green.
  19. Scope mount is from JV Dynamics.
  20. Hey 40 Open shooters. Here are some tips and words of advice I have dispensed on Power Factor Show. This is the best one-stop-shop for 40 open advice on the ultranet!
  21. Just got my carry optic gun this week and shot it yesterday. I love this new division. Hope it becomes a permanent thing. This is a G23 that I used for IDPA SSP and USPSA Production. I didn't shoot it much anymore, so I sent it off to Grizz Precision to have the optic cut and Cerakote finish.
  22. I shot Carry Optics today for the first time. I was the only one shooting the new (provisional) division, and I'm probably the earliest adopter in my section. What a blast! I don't want to go back to shooting irons, and I've primarily been a Limited shooter for the past 10 years. I had my Glock 23 cut for an RMR by Grizz Precision. Just got it back the middle of this week. Sighted it in yesterday and shot a match today. I love it!
  23. I'm in the same boat. I'm just about at month 5 of waiting on my Glock from GSSF. I'm doing a 40 open with slide mounted RMR. Just 'cause. I've done 40 Open in the past on the STI platform. I just like 40 for everything.
  24. I'm with you 2011BLDR. If we could say full cap mags, optic required to play, that would be the ticket.
  25. I just messaged the A1 Director (bgary) and he says that the 500 production run entry level was intended to allow other guns not already on the Prod list to play in CO. That's not what Appendix D7 says. It says the gun has to already be on the Prod list. Message Troy and push for a ruling if you want to use the PC CORE or other gun not on the list.
