  1. Hey gang. I will be in the Newport, RI area from April 15-20, 2016 including the weekend of the 16th-17th. Are there any matches anywhere in the area? I understand I may have to go out of state to MA or CT. I won't be bringing any guns, so not planning to shoot, but might want to hang out with some like minded folks (possibly RO your match!) for lack of better things to do. Thanks Larry
  2. I too went from custom STI's back to Glocks. I shoot just about as well with either. I like the G35 for Limited, but if your duty gun is a G22 or G17, just go with one of those and shoot the appropriate division.
  3. I am working on a Glock 23 based open gun. 135gr FP Rainier Ballistics, 8.5gr CFE Pistol, 1.135" COL. Power Factor was 168 and the temperature outside was a bit cold, I'd guess about 40°F. Threaded LW barrel length is 4.5 inches. This load is too snappy out of this light weight gun. I am now experimenting with 155gr FP Rainier and 6.9gr CFE Pistol. Haven't chronoed it yet but it feels better. I am using Hodgdon's website for load data. Out of a 5" Schuemann AET barrel STI that I used to have, I loaded 135gr FP Rainier with 8.7 gr Alliant Power Pistol to 1.180" COL to make major with room to spare.
  4. Cheap is my middle name. I'll contact you Mitchell when I get the 650 coming.
  5. I am considering going from a SDB to a new XL650. Can I use my existing strong mount and bullet tray "as is" for a new 650? The SDB strong mount has a top plate connecting the two legs. I know it's a little tall, but could I mount the 650 to that?
  6. What .40 PCC are you guys running? I am interested and would love to get into it using my same .40 cal Glock mags. You can PM me so as not to derail the thread. Thanks.
  7. What does "not running" mean? If it is not fully extracting the spent case, the recoil spring probably needs to be lightened. I think I ran a 9-lb recoil spring in my STI 40 open.
  8. I've got the springs on mine too. That's the way I received it when I bought it used 10 years ago.
  9. zzt, you should post your data in the 40 Open thread. http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=77956&page=15
  10. Saw this thread just now and want to up date my previous statement. The dual illuminated RMR has been good to me at outdoor matches, but it is far too dim at my local indoor ranges. Targets are illuminated with lights that point downrange, but there is no light directly overhead to provide enough illumination to power the optic.
  11. I used to shoot Open with an STI and now several years later I'm getting back into it with a Glock. Using my same old pet load doesn't work as well in the glock. The recoil is stout, presumably because there is less static mass to tame the gun. Back to the drawing board for me.
  12. Nice! You convinced JPL to build a 40 Open gun? I'm sure my name came up more than a few times.
  13. I am currently working with CFE Pistol (slowly, as I have time) to develop a .40 Open load for a Glock. I am working directly from Hodgdon's load data. The 135's are too snappy in the lightweight gun and there's too much gas for the comp. I have done a small amount of testing with 155's and will also get some 165's to test in this gun.
  14. This episode of power factor show may help you since you're new to the Square Deal.
  15. Just be sure there is a slight gap between the slide and comp when the gun is in battery. Use a feeler gauge or a sheet of paper to check for clearance. My carver comp was touching the slide. I simply sanded down the back end of the comp until I got a little clearance. I think I removed 0.005" to 0.007" with sandpaper. Just place the sand paper on a solid smooth flat surface when running the comp against it.
  16. I've been looking at PCC's recently as well. The stuff from quarter circle 10 looks good to me. I like the idea of a Glock mag fed PCC in the same caliber as my pistol. I could have several mags on the belt and shoot both the pistol and carbine with the any mag. They do have 9, 40 and 45.
  17. Experiences so far with my G23 Open gun: First shots were over chrono with five loads that I was testing for power factor. Gun short stroked ~40% of the time causing Failure to Extract/Eject malfunctions. I later figured out that the recoil spring was heavier than stock. Recoil was stout with all five loads as described in my previous posts. Replaced recoil spring with 13 lb ISMI spring for a compact gun. Second time out, I shot an indoor outlaw match with three stages. First observation - the dual illuminated RMR was not very bright at the indoor range where lighting is angled and almost never directly overhead. Started Stage 1 with a minor load using 135gr Rainier and Ramshot Competition. This is my production/carry optics load. It was soft shooting, but the gun short stroked twice in a 24 round stage, failing to eject/extract. One failure was shooting Strong hand only, the other Weak hand only. Stage 2 used 1/2 scale targets and a plate rack. We were given the option of shooting from a closer line Strong hand only, or shooting further back freestyle. I chose to shoot further back because there was good lighting directly overhead. I could see the dot much better. Again with the minor load the gun short stroked, FTE 6 times on a 24 round stage. Stage 3 gave us 32 paper plates to shoot at with a 10 second time limit. I chose to run a new load that should be about Major PF, but I have not shot it over a chrono yet. The load used 155gr Hornady XTP (the only 155's I currently have available) and Hodgdon CFE Pistol powder. Using my 25 round big stick the gun functioned flawlessly allowing me to draw and fire 25 rounds in 8.25 seconds. I hadn't planned to reload, so I didn't even attempt one. The recoil did not feel nearly as harsh as the 135gr loads I tested before and video confirms that the gun shot pretty flat. Again, shooting was from a location of bad lighting so I did not track the dot too well. Basically, the moral of the story is that this gun and comp (and the nut behind the trigger) may like 155gr bullets better. Time to get some 155 Rainier's and do more testing!
  18. Welcome Charis. Did you really just discover and join the forum this month?
  19. Shot the G23 shorty forty today over the chrono. Had a couple loads make major, but results are mixed and more testing is definitely needed. The comp is not matched to the load all that well. By that, I mean that there was too much muzzle flip and too much gas going out the end of the comp. It was quite a thumper too! The entire gun only weighs 28oz. Launching Rainier 135's at major power hits you in the hand pretty good!
  20. Have not shot it yet. Planning to chrono some loads this Sunday if the weather is decent and film it for power factor show. I've got three different charge weights made up with CFE Pistol and two more charge weights with Power Pistol. All using Rainier Ballistics 135gr FP and loaded to 1.135" COL. Hoping for major.
  21. Probably some brass shavings in there preventing it from coming out. I've had that happen. Just keep working at it.
  22. I really like my Trijicon RM05G with 9MOA green dot. No electronics to fail. Very bright in direct sunlight, bright enough in shade.
