I own a small frame Tanfoglio/witness in 9mm. The serial number number is AE8XXXX I bought it used so after a couple of years of shooting it I took the frame down to parts for a thorough cleaning. I did not touch the slide. I put it back together, function checked it and everything checked out. With the safety engaged the trigger and action were locked tight.
I took it out to shoot an IDPA match this morning. I loaded and the SO asked me to do a press check. I did so and with the safety on I was able to pull the slide back, with the safety engaged that shouldn't have happened. I told the SO something was wrong with my pistol and I unloaded and took it to a safe zone where I checked it again. Same result safety on and round in the chamber on the slide could be manipulated. I shot the match with a loaner gun and went home.
At home I tried to diagnsose the problem (using snap caps). This what happens (in all cases when the safety was off the gun functioned as normal):
1. Chamber empty, no magazine = safety on action is locked tight.
2. Chamber empty magazine in seated (tested both loaded and unloaded) = safety on action is locked tight.
3. Chamber loaded (with and without magazine) hammer back and safety on, trigger was locked tight but slide could be manipulated.
4. Chamber loaded (with and without magazine) hammer down and safety on, trigger locked and slide would not move. (I suspect it would not move becuase the hammer was down and was locked in place).
Any suggestions on what I did to the safety system when I put the frame back together, or am I just forgetting how the thing worked and the slide could always be manipualted with the safety on?
Thanks.
