Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. Hello, I have just recently started hand loading .40 S&W for my STI Eagle. My first batch of rounds were made using: Once fired Federal brass (from my .40) Primer: WSP Powder: 4 gr IMR PB Bullet: 180 gr Speer TMJ seated to COL: 1.30 (1.125's don't feed well in my pistol) I started with the 4 gr load as I am looking to only push 700-800 FPS, I'm not really concerned about PF as I don't shoot USPSA or IDPA Just need to knock down steel at 20-25 yards. My first rounds through the Chronograph averaged 655 fps with a SD of 34.9 (not great) well below what my reloading manual listed for this load (851 fps). Since these were my first .40 loads I checked the powder weight of every round all were within .1 gr of each other. I made another small test batch for the chrono using the same recipe. The second test did not go well at all with a 578 FPS low to a high of 740 FPS and all kinds of crazy numbers in between no consistency at all from round to round. I feel like I have consistent powder measurements and case/bullet dimensions. One thing I'm not sure about is the taper crimp, could that be the cause of the erratic chrono numbers. (I checked the chrono with factory loads, had consistent numbers). I'm using a dillion 550b. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated..
