Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. That is all some great info, guys. What is quick load and where can I down load that?
  2. Hi, I would like to hear some of your thoughts on this subject. I have been reloading for almost 40 years, but I just purchased a STI Grandmaster in .38 Super, so this is a whole new, yet exciting, world for me to start working up loads for this. And I spent about 8 hours researching powders on this forum before asking this. After all of my reading, I decided that I would pick up some VV 3N37, 3N38 and N350. I was also interested in testing SR4756, since I load that for two other calibers. Then I read all the discussion and then verified that Hodgdon/IMR is truly ceasing the production of SR4756 in a couple of months. So that is out. Then I had a discussion with a gentleman I know that is a large smokeless powder distributor. He explained to me that I should not get too excited about the VV because the plant in Finland has some huge issues and needs $60 billion do bring the plant up to code, can't afford it, and have been trying to find a buyer. And this has not happened. He furthermore told me that they told him that effective January 1, 2014 they will no longer be taking any more orders on powder. They will only keep the plant running just enough to take care of all of their backorders. Now, one gentleman that I know did tell me that I should ignore that and he felt that someone.....maybe Hodgdon...maybe Winchester....maybe Alliant....but that someone would at least buy the recipes for their powders and probably continue them down the road somewhere. But before I go any further, I am curious if you have heard this, as well. But most important, I feel sort of shut out because after 8 hours of reading favorite powder recipes, I ended up picking 4 powders that I will not be able to obtain very soon. That said, I have been looking at the burn rate charts to try and figure out a few things. And I guess I could sure just pick 4 or 5 powders and see what happens. But let's say that none of us can get these four powders in the future......what other favorite powders would you suggest? As I look at the list I do recall hearing some of these mentioned in posts, but nothing near as much as the three VV powders. I could try 800X, HS-6, Longshot, A #5, WAP, power pistol, silhouette or true blue. And although I do not see this on the chart anywhere, I was actually going to try Win Auto Comp, too. Forgot that one. Any thoughts on any of these from any of you? I just feel horrible that the VV situation sounds so daunting. But I don't want to get excited about it if I may not be able to get it later. I hope to hear some good news from you experienced 38 super loaders. Mark
  3. I would like to update my response above. I needed to order more MG bullets and called there on Tuesday, Christmas eve. That lady answered and she was very pleasant. I had 2-3 questions and she answered them right away and even wished me a very Merry Christmas. I am expecting to see the order shipped out tomorrow or Friday. Again, I think they are a great company.
  4. Thank you, guys, for the kind words of wisdom. I really appreciate that a lot. And I am looking forward to playing with this a bit.
  5. Thank you to each of you. Right now the cheapest nickel I can find is almost double the cost of the starline brass at 14 cents. I will not be paying twice that to say I have nickel. Thanks for the wisdom!
  6. Thank you, both of you. I will definitely take this into consideration and hey, I don' mind buying two different bullets if need be. One thing I would like to ask, however. What make/model of open gun to you both shoot? I ask that only because it may be possible that these may feed slightly different in your open guns differently than in my STI Grandmaster. Not sure. Just thinking out loud. I guess I will figure that out soon enough.
  7. I've read through about 40 pages of topics and heard a few tiny comments on this. But let me be direct and specific. I have money for both, but if I can conserve here I want to know if I should, but more importantly if it is best. I have a new .357 exchange kit coming for my Sig. And after conversing with the owner of MG Bullets, I have chosen to go with the 125 gr. JHP bullets that he said are specifically designed for that caliber. I completely understand why now and I am sold on them. I just got word that my new STI Trubor Grandmaster in .38 Super has arrived and I will receive that next week and need to order my bullets and dies tomorrow. As I read some posts I have heard a couple people state that the 125 gr. MGs will work "just fine" in the 38 super. Yet I saw hundreds of posts where shooters have stated that they use and love the 124 gr. MG bullets designed for 9mm and 38 super. I have looked at the profiles over and over and I do see some differences. What do you experienced shooters recommend? Would you recommend that I just go with the 125 gr. JHP bullets and use them in both calibers? Or is there possibly a reason why I should use only the 124 gr JHP for my 38 super? Would the 124 gr possibly be more accurate? I would appreciate any and all advice on this one. Thank you in advance for your thoughts!
  8. I've been reloading for 30 years, but just starting out with my new .38 Super. I will be shooting a top of the line STI Trubor Grandmaster and will be loading for major. I have searched through 40 pages of topics and have not heard one word on this subject. So I would like to know from you experienced shooters if you prefer the brass or nickel plated brass at these high pressures and why. I do shoot a lot of nickel in .357 and .45acp and love it. I hear people complain about the brass becoming brittle over time. I've just never seen that. But this is a different animal here with these high pressure loads. I care about the brass life and also the feeding. I will be ordering 1000 cases in the next day or so and although I have access to whatever I need in once fired brass, I want to start with new brass. Please shoot me some of your thoughts.
  9. I am enjoying this thread. And I am by no means extremely knowledgeable like some of you. I am new to the .38 Super and just fortunately read a bit about primers before seeing this thread. I think all of you, in light of this issue being raised, will gain something from this. Here is the link: (it won't allow me to paste in the link so I will type it out) http://38super.net/Pages/Major.html Paste that in your browser and then scroll down past the power factor chart and photos of excessive pressure and supported barrels. The next section is entitled, "Rifle Primers". Here he discusses the sensitivity levels of various brands of primers. I think it will shed light on this subject. I hope that helps.
  10. I have been buying from Montana Gold for some time now. I am so incredibly impressed with their bullets that I am literally switching over to MG for every single pistol cartridge I reload for, except my .45 Colt. But I was laughing as I heard everyone talk about how rude they are. THEY ARE!! And being in business for 40 years I don't understand how they stay in business with their attitudes. But, here is what I have learned. One, I NEVER call them to ask questions about stock. Don't do it! The owner of the company is cool and he responds very well to emails from the website. And he is quick, too. When I recently had a bunch of questions about bullets for the .357 Sig, the guy was great and answered every question via email. I only talked to him one time and voiced my concerns with the rude lady who always answers. He mirrored the words of one of you earlier by stating that they are working around the clock to stock items and they get 1000 phone calls a day asking the same thing. The other thing he told me was how their production worked. so now I just click on my link for whatever bullet I want. It my be unavailable for a few days or even a week, but then suddenly it is there. Then I order. And they are pretty quick. Normally my bullets are to me inside of a week. But it is true that they don't send confirmations or tracking numbers. What he told me was that when they produce stock and they are ready to fill orders on it, they make it live on the website, usually toward the end of the day. Then when they have just about enough orders for their supply, they take it down. And in the past that is normally sometime the next day. So just watch, keep an eye open, and when it says you can order, just order the bullets. Heck, it is free shipping and they ship fast. And one last thing. I mentioned the consistency. I took the time one day to measure 20 different 115 gr. 9mm bullets. I had 4 different ones in stock. When I measured the actual width of every bullet, the other three were not bad, but definitely not consistent. The MG bullets were right on the nuts for all 20. Then I weighed them, both individually and in a group. HOly schniekes!! Those other bullets were all over the place, again. But not the MGs. They were almost 100%. I was so impressed that I have, as I stated earlier, decided to switch over to MG for everything pistol.
  11. I have a question and am new to competitive shooting. What do you guys mean when you talk about the "dot flattening out"? I am reading between the lines and figure you must be speaking of muzzle jump and keeping the dot on the target, correct? If that is the case, then I have to ask an obvious question here. How on earth could you increase the velocity and power factor higher and higher.....and suddenly get less jump or a more stable dot hold? That just does not make sense to me. Unless....... I have been reading a lot on here and keep hearing about "working the comp". Maybe this will put 2 and 2 together for me. Is what I just asked bringing the "working the comp" into play to the point where there is just the right amount of pressurized gas shooting out the top of the compensator that it is now actually zeroing out the muzzle jump to keep my hold pretty much dead on for the followup shot? I hope to hear a great answer, and oh how I would love to get this right. BTW....what I am going to be shooting is a STI Trubor Grandmaster with the 6 port comp in .38 Super. I know, pretty expensive. But I saved for years to splurge on this and I wanted the best. Thanks in advance for your wisdom on this.
