  1. Pink foam makes an *awesome backstop*. Just picked up a few airsoft equivalents of my real steel for practice, was going to do the towel trick, then realized I had spare foam from another project, thought I'd give it a shot (so to speak).. Have put a couple thousand .25-.30gr into a 2x4' slab of 2" thick "Foamular 250". Have picked up a dozen off the floor afterwards. The Tokyo Marui pistols running green gas have enough power at 12 yards that they don't bounce, just go through the paper target I've taped on, and embed in the foam up to a few BBs deep. The WE G35 is a little slower, so get an occasional bounce towards the end of a mag. Here's a pointer: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Owens-Corning-FOAMULAR-250-2-in-x-4-ft-x-8-ft-Tongue-and-Groove-Foam-5D/202080950 HD didn't carry it at the stores around San Jose, but I found a local distributor who was really great, sold me a couple sheets at a decent price and helped me cut it into 2x4' sections so I could fit it into my car.
  2. I'm a fan of the Ballistic/4000 combo. If you're going to go to the 4500, look at the options that include things like ATRAG (sp?).
  3. Interesting reading others takes on Peltor vs. HL. I have a pair of Peltor Tac 6s that only come out of the bag when I can't find any of my HLs. I double up since I seem to spend time on the gravel next to a braked 7WSM or in the lane next to the guy trying his 454 indoors. I use the "Sparkplug" foamies as they've got a great NRR, are comfy, and don't make my ears itch. (Not sure why (dyes? Plasticizers? Solvent?) but some foamies irritate the hell out of my ears.). HLs on over those, crank the volume up, and I can hear the RO but protect my hearing. Only downsides I've run into with the HLs is that they can pick up interference from cell phones, and the plastic cover on the ear cups isn't 100% proof against aerosol sunscreen. Someday I'll buy Sordins, but until then this works. $.01,+/-.01
  4. My rem 700 5R had three miles of jump when running maglength rounds out of AI mags (badger dbm installed by a local smith). 175SMKs tolerated the jump and still ended up shooting pretty much to the limit of my ability to hold and windread at 1K. You've been shooting long enough to know to work up. My load for my 700 5r turned out to be 44.1gr varget, 175smk, wolf primer, fed brass with a 336 bushing in the redding full length sizer. Seated to avg oal of 2.816. If you're sure its not your hold or breathing, perhaps time to bed the action?
  5. Process I used for a couple thousand rounds of .308 for 200-1000 yd competition: Used fgmm 175 as a brass source Tumble range dirt and much of the carbon out with green cob. Shiny=less die scratching Spray lube with oneshot and a jelly roll pan; spray/roll, wait a few sec, repeat Size/deprime in redding fl type s die with neck bushing Trim with a giraud to 2.007 Tumble the lube off with green cob Remove media from primer holes with a drywall screw Hand prime for feel with wolf or ccibr - I was using Fed brass (soft), so around 5th loading some primers would seat really easy. Set those cases aside for practice. Charge cases with Varget through a Satern - used a tuned rcbs charge master Seat 175smks with redding precision seater to avg pal of 2.818 I didn't test press priming vs hand priming, but should have, since it'd save handwork A 450 powder die with funnel would have worked better than a Satern free-floating in a die hole. A toilet paper tube dropped over the seater micrometer kept the Satern funnel lip from catching on the mic. I don't shoot bench rest, so sub-moa is all I need. If I were not shooting beyond 600, I would have tried a polished Dillon measure. These days, doing much the same thing but in .260
  6. If you shoot rifle or revolver, the Magnetospeed unit is awesome. I use mine instead of my CED whenever I have the option. Not helpful for auto loaders at this point though.
  7. I've got cerakote and ion bond. Any new customs I have built will be ion bonded.
