  1. Thanks for all the opinions. I would say I am pretty good with trigger control on rifles, but must admit that most of my shooting has been with precision bolt actions. I would also say that I have had it double on me about four times in 600rds. Yes, once when you are not expecting it is too many. I felt like a jackass trying to be cool or something. I am not that familiar with light triggers on semi-autos and its possible that I was concentrating so much on a smooth let off on those few times that I didn't have enough of a deliberat follow through or a good enough grip and the slight recoil forced it back and then forward into my finger, causing the double. That fact that it does this when only two rounds are left, leads me to beleive I see the first three in a nice group and try extra hard to keep the last two in there. Oh well, I'll let it go a little bit and see if its just me. Now that I have my loads pretty much worked out, I think I'm going to practice off the bench, in alternate positions. I will not be near as precise with the trigger control, so I will see if it ever does it there. If it does, it will go back to JP to get right. I still haven't been able to call them. Work has been a little busy this week. Friday is off though, so I'll see what they think then. Thanks again. Tom
  2. Hi Guys, Well, I've put about 600rd through my JP CTR-02 in the last month, since I got it. It is extremely accurate and well made. I have gotten several groups of .60 at 200yds using the 69gr SMK and Varget. Average though is more like 1.0 to 1.3 at 200yds. Still, nothing I can complain about. I have noticed a problem with doubling, that I'm not sure if its me or the rifle. Out of those 600 rounds, most have been at the bench, working up loads. The rife rest I was using was a Lahti Rifle evaluator, so it was pretty solid. I noticed that whenever it does it, it is always on the last two rounds in a magazine. Kind of sucks when your doing group shooting! I keep the rifle pretty well lubed and have done a general cleaning after about every hundred rounds after the initial break in. I even took the pins and trigger group out and cleaned them. I used the grease supplied with the rifle for the kit and not too much. My technique for shooting the groups is pull the trigger and hold it to the rear for the follow through. I know that with light triggers, its possible for the rifle to recoil and when it comes back forward to hit your finger and fire again. I'm just not sure if its my technique, the rest and technique or the rifle. I'll call JP when I get the chance, to discuss with them, but I'm wondering what your thoughts are. Anyone experience this before, with this few rounds through the rifle, or when using a similar technique? Thanks for your thoughts Tom
  3. Great, now I have to go out and get Mobil 1 20w50! Just another great excuse to go to the parts store! Ha ha, don't tell the wife. Thanks for the suggestions. Anyone had any problems with smoking during sustained fire ie, 60 rds in about 3 minutes. I was playing around seeing how fast I could hit some swinging steel at 200yds, which was fairly easy with the JP CTR02 and JP ACOG and it was burning my eyes after a minute or two. Maybe I used too much. Is there such a thing? Not the way some of you talk about lubbing your AR's!! Kidding. Thanks again for the help Tom
  4. Thanks for the replies. I certainly have enough Mobil 1 on hand, so I will try it out. I must admit that from my military background I have never heard of using grease on the buffer and spring. What type of grease are you using. The only kind I have right now is the Shooters choice grease. Thanks again Tom
  5. Hi guys, I'm a recent convert to using Mobil 1 in my M1100 CM and have since read that it should be liberally used in the AR as well. Do most people do this. It seems a little thicker than I would normally use, but if it works, hey I'll try it. Any down side to using it? When using it, how long do you go before you need to clean. Thanks Tom
  6. I will give them a call. Thanks again!
  7. Hi guys, I've guickly exhausted my supply of 500 69gr SMK's and I'm looking to make a bulk purchase. If the deal is good enough, I'm willing to buy upward of 5K. I think Sierra might do something like that, but I'm not sure. I've done some cursory searches and found midway had 500 for 59.99. Thanks for any help, Tom
  8. Zak, Are the Larue SPR mounts available now? Who has them the cheapest? Thanks George, You are probably right about not seeing any tighter groups, but I do have to try. Still searching for that elusive 1/4" group. The ACOG is cystal clear and hard to beat for most targets inside of 400 meters. Thanks once again for the help! Tom
  9. Hi Guys, Ok, I have a JP CTR-02 that I have been ringing out over the last couple weeks. Great rifle, great trigger. Current scope is an ACOG with JP reticle mounted in the dovetail in the reciever. I have been working on loads for this rifle and I'm going to mount a Leupold MK IV 3.5x10x40 mildot on it to see how good I can get groups, as well as play with it for a while. My end goal it to have multiple optics set up for this rifle including an Aimpoint ML2 I have, the ACOG and the Leupold. I have had the A.R.M.S #22 mounts before and they worked well. I have also used the Leupold MKIV's, but they are pretty pricey these days. I'm just wondering what others are using with this type of scope. Keep in mind it is a 30mm tube. What height are you using? I'm not sure I need quick detach rings as I will have a little time to change it out and I'm sure a torque wrench will get me pretty close. Thanks for all your input. Tom
  10. I got my CM about two months ago. It was NIB and cost me $750. Not too bad. I am just starting out in 3 gun and it shoots as fast as I can. I haven't had it long enough to talk about durability. I will say that mine would not cycle the bolt when it was new. After reading on this site, I opened the gas ports up a bit and used Mobil 1 10w30 liberally on the bolt and mag tube. It works very well now. No malfunctions in over 500 rds, including reduced recoil slugs and buck and skeet loads of birdshot. One mod I added was the EZ loader gate. Not too hard to install and makes quick loading a lot easier. Overall I think its a good deal and ready to go out of the box. I would fire about 500rd through it before I used it in competition as well as get some rubber o rings for spares. Good luck with your pic. Tom
  11. Well, finally got to the range today. First time its been open since Huricane Rita hit here. I worked up some loads using Varget, Win Brass, Win Primers and 69gr SMK's. Not too bad for the first batch. My first time at the range I was just burning up some left over .223 I had lying around, about 100rds worth. So the rifle is just slightly broken in. For this trip I was seeing an avg of 2750 with 25.4 gr of Varget loaded out to 2.265. Slightly longer than I wanted because I didn't check after all the stations were filled. It was on a dillon 650 and I was going for 2.26 as per the Sierra maual. I'm getting SD's of 11 or lower, so I"m happy with the consistency. Temp was 91 degrees. The groups I was getting were between .50 and .75 at 100yds. I'm happy with those for now, but I will try a few more powder weights and then try Viht N140. Then I will work on the 55 NBT's. Thanks for all your help Tom
  12. Thanks for the replies. George, your really helping me out a lot lately. I probably should have said I have reloaded for it for several years, but only in small batches. Due to some time in the sand box, I couldn't shoot, so in reality, it really has only had about 500rds put through it, and those were 130gr plated Rainiers I thought that might make a difference. I'm going to be moving to a new bullet and working up a new load, so I figured I would try a few different ones and see what she likes. I'm using Supercomp brass, Winchester small rifle primers and Viht 3N38. My gun is an SVI 5.5" barrel, 8 port comp gun. I'm either going to go to a Montana Gold bullet, or a Zero bullet. Going to a 9mm bullet would help with logistics. Got any good starting recipe's? Thanks again. Tom
  13. Hi, I have been reloading for my .38 super for several years now, using a .356 bullet made specifically for 38 super. My question is that I just realized the Schueman Ultimatch barrel says .355 on it. Do you think I would get better results with 9mm bullets? Just curious. I'm getting good accuracy now with what I have. Thanks for your thoughts. Tom
  14. Just did it, worked great. I"m sold on that technique. Try it, you'll like it. Thanks again. Tom
  15. Thanks for that little trick. I know exactly what you mean about it looking clean, but being far from it. I used to do a lot of skeet shooting and would look down the barrels and think it was clean. Just for general maintenance, I decided to clean the barrels.. Wow, all of a sudden, little bits of plastic are sheeting off and it looks like hell. Not sure what impact it has, but a lot of times it is mental. If you think it is effecting your shooting, than it is. That is why confidence in your equipment/setup is so important. Anyway, good advice! My wife is heading to the store this afternoon. I will ask her to get some of the copper pot scrubber and put this technique to work. Thanks again. Tom
  16. Hello all, Well, I was trying to clean my 1100 barrel and it looks like a train wreck inside. It hasn't had that many rounds through it, maybe 500 with a good cleaning at 200. What I think has happened is that I shot some regular shot through the barrel which left some was residue, then about a week later, I fired some more shot and then about 35 slugs through it. After trying Shooters Choice and Hoppe #9, I noticed some nice gray sheeting coming off the patch. I recognized it as lead like when I used to shoot my Ruger Blackhawk with lead loads. I have tried the above solevants as well as Shooters Choice Shotgun and choke cleaner. Ive scrubed with a brush about a hundred times, and it just barely removes any. Is this normal with slugs? The area goes from the chamber to just past the gas ports. What do you use to get rid of it. I don't have any lead remover on hand, but is that the best way? I'm really looking for a quick fix. If I need the lead remover, I'll just shoot it the way it is until it gets here. I'm sure it won't have much of an impact anyway. Maybe this is the time to send it off to get the forcing cone lengthened. Do any of you have a recommendation for where to send it, with contact info? Thanks for any information. Tom
  17. Thanks for all the input. Practice is its number one purpose. I think I'm just going to go with the PACT MKIV. Tom
  18. I've searched the numerous threads on here about the different timers but still can't figure out which one to get. Some say the CED8000, some say the PACT MKIV. I already have a PACT Chrono that works fine for me. I'm also on the fence as to seeing what the new MKIV will be like. If it was a little more aerodynamic it would be nice and if it had volume control. Other than that, everyone swears by them. So, since I have a chrono already, would I be better served by another model. Cost isn't really an issue if the features are worth it. Thanks for your time. Tom
  19. I pick up my CTR-02 tomorrow and I want to start loading for it. I'm looking for some pet loads for this particular setup. Ideally, a close range load and a long range load. I've got a TA01 ACOG on it with the JP reticle and by long range I mean 300-400 meters. I have 500pcs of Winchester virgin brass, 500 69 SMK's and 300 Nosler 55gr BT. I have winchester primers, but I can get CCI's pretty quickly. I will be loading at least the close in stuff on a Dillon 650. I might load the long range stuff on a single stage. Not sure yet. Even if you aren't using these components, tell me what your rifle seems to like. Thanks Tom
  20. Here is what I'm trying to get them to buy. All from MGM IPSC targets 100 Target stands, 2 angled, 8 straight 12 rolls of pasters 10 Pepper Poppers (at a minimum 5) 10 8" knock over plates (at a minimum 5) 4 Rifle flash targets 2 sets of clay pigeon holders 1 additional plate rack for 2 total 3 PACT Club timer III's from Brian's store Barrier material and additional props I will try to locate on post, ie desks, chairs, doors, plywood, 2x4's etc. Comes to $6276. I hope they go for it. It would be really nice. Its the end of the fiscal year, so I know they have money to spend. If you can think of anything I missed, please chime in. Once its in motion, it will be hard to get additional funding. Thanks for your help so far. Tom
  21. Thanks for the link. I'm in the process of printing out all the rulebooks now. Then I'll come up with some stages that might be interesting. Nothing too fancy and probably not too technical. Hoser stages will be a must as that is what most soldiers will like. I'll try to keep the match fairly simple to start off with. I've got to find some RO's to help out, but that shouldn't be impossible to find. Once I've got an idea of a course of fire, I can see what kind of targets we will need. Right now I'm thinking mostly paper at short ranges, some poppers for shotgun out to about 35yds plus some paper for slugs out to about 60yds, but I might limit that because slugs are expensive and a soldier can go to Walmart and get a box of shells (birdshot) for fairly cheap. I'll add some flash targets for rifle, with some multiple paper targets out to 100yds. Plus the regular pistol targets. I think for the first match the weapons will be staged and loaded. This limits some of the need for special equipment. I thnk we need some PACT Club III timers, some barrier materials, some engineer tape (White cloth 3"x150' on a roll)some rebar, a sledge, some clipboards, a suggestion box, safe area marking, a laptop and portable printer, pens/pencils, money box. Thats all I can think of right now. Any other suggestions. Thanks again. Tom
  22. Thanks for the input so far. I have an email out to Mike at MGM to see what he recommends for a starter kit. I did think of another question though, what is the minimum range for shotgun slugs on steel. In Matt Burketts AR DVD match footage, I noticed some shots on plates with shotgun. I'm assuming that was birdshot, which is probably not a bad idea. What size, type and thickness targets are normally used for slug loads, and what are typical distances. Thanks again. Tom
  23. Currently stationed at Fort Polk, LA. While on the range today, I was approached by a man who is in charge of the facility as well as the funding it recieves. I was shooting my M1100CM and I told him I was getting it ready for 3 Gun. He was very enthusiastic of the idea of having these type matches at the range. My problem, I've never shot a 3 Gun/Multi Gun match. I've Shot IPSC Pistol, and some Tactical Carbine stuff, but never the whole deal. He wanted to know what kind of range equipment would be needed to run it. I immediately thought of this board and said I would try to find out and put a feasability paper together for him. The questions I really need answered are what equipment would be needed to run a 3 gun match. I know it can vary from dirt cheap to really expensive, so I'll try to narrow it down. The range consists of two seperate firing areas, seperated by a 10ft high berm. One side is for pistols and goes to 100yds. I estimate it is 30yds wide. The other side, right next to it is 440yds long by 50yds wide. I figure a couple stages could be set up on the pistol side, to include shotgun. The rifle side could do two as well. For equipment, they have one plate rack and thats about it. At a minimum I think we need some IPSC targets and holders, some pasters, another plate rack and then some sort of reactive targets for some long range rifle shots. I think we can get away with some medium distance shots on the IPSC targets, but it seems they have some money to spend and I would like to give them a range of stuff to choose from. I don't know what there budget is. So, I know this is a lot to ask, but someone who runs a range or has started one up, please give me a list of must have's, and nice to have's focused on three gun type events. I say type, because most of the regular participants will be soldiers, who have an M4 style rifle, probably a glock and a pump shotgun. I forsee modifying the classes to get people involved. These will likely be fairly new shooters, with some carbine experience, limited shotgun and limited pistol. In your recommendations, please put a couple sources that I can either look up on the internet, or call. I really appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks Tom Ehrhart
  24. Update, I adjusted the leg and then tried it out with some dummy rounds. Seems to work just fine now. Thanks for all the help. I hope to get to the range this week to make sure she is running just right. The pictures in the book helped out a lot. Tom
