  1. I just don't want Aluminum. I was going to trade a mint 1964 40X repeater in 308 for it, I think I am going to keep the rifle. I am not worried about the weight, my little 365 can handle the everyday chores. Thanks for all of the input. I am building a commander on a 2011. It will do well also.
  2. Thanks brother. Hope all is well out your way.
  3. Going to throw this out there for some that might know. I have the chance to get a STI Guardian 3.9 2011 in 9mm. What is holding me up is that I know when they came out in 2016, they were built on aluminum frames. They were also later done in steel frames. Great little carry guns and this one has minimal rounds through it. The owner is not familiar with the 2011 style pistols and I do not have access to it to do a magnet test on the frame. I would be in the $1700 range with the pistol and accessories. I don't want the AL frame and they were black coated. Serial # prefix starts with a TG and is in the 25XXX range. Any ideas. Thanks in advance. I know the price is high for it.
  4. Do a complete clean and inspection of parts to look for broken parts, ejector, extractor, link, etc. Did you go back with the same weights on the springs ? Not knowing your ability in understanding the operating procedure of a 1911, make sure everything is put back correctly. Does it cycle by hand without any type of dragging or binding. Use enough lube.
  5. Jeff Abernathy at Tommy Guns in NC. Very reasonable and great turn around. Tell him, Tommy Roupe told you to call. Jeff ran Para when they were in Charlotte, NC. You wont be paying big name prices or be waiting big name times.
  6. The company that molded the grips was located in Texas, but I do not remember the name of the company. My late friend that was a engineer and he interviewed for the company. He said that in the foyer of the office was a display case that had a STI, Tripp grip that the company made. Maybe Dave Dawson or Virgil Tripp could divulge the name of the company. The market is to small for someone to make the investment into the plastic ones again. Maybe the company would do a small run for someone if you can find out who the company was. Dave could confirm, but I an guessing that the order for grips like that would be in the 25,000 grips per order for STI/SV back in the day. I wish I stocked up on them when I was doing grips for Dawson Precision and Clark Custom. Who knew, just like primers, who knew.
  7. I agree, but there is reasonable and fair. I learned a valuable lesson early on in my shooting career, I thought to be competitive you had to have the best builders, the biggest names in the industry. Well, I waited and learned, spent thousands, and progressed much faster with smiths that were not as big named. Smiths that built just as good, if not better than some Big names. Thanks for the correction on the .20, you are correct. I meant .020. .20 may just create holes.
  8. I have a commander slide that is a factory Remington slide in stainless. It is marked with a large logo of Remington on one side and R1911 and Recon on the other side. It is a nice slide that I fitted and it is nice, but I prefer to have the lettering removed. I have had two different well known smiths say that it could be done. One involved more money than the slide cost. Anyone know someone that might want to tackle it. I would like it removed in manner as to cut panels out of the slide, maybe .20 deep. Or I could just leave it and shoot it the way it is. Open to some thoughts. The slide does have front and rear angled cocking serrations on it. Thanks in advance, Tommy
  9. I have not read all of the posts, but my father in law picked up a 9PCC from Aims and it had a straight trigger in it that was fantastic. Aim supposedly has the triggers on sale again for $79. I purchase two a while back and for $79 they are great. Don't know if that helps or not, but for the money, they are tough to beat.
  10. I have one of Tim's 13.5 barrels. It works as advertised. Still trying to find a great accuracy load. Shoots well.
  11. I have built many 2011's over the years. I have one or two 9mm's now that I have built. I have always used the factory STI mags. The Gen-2's are fine and mine work fine. I have a few set up for flush fit and I have three that are 23 rounders if I ever want to shoot it in a match. I have never fell into the "tuned", special mags made by others. I am glad that folks have had the ability to sell their products, but I never needed the wheel to be reinvented. I will say that some manufactures made better products over others. Hence the reason for the continued improving of the STI mags, or Staccato, or what ever name they are using today. Maybe I have been lucky over the past 35 years in USPSA. Call Dave Dawson at Dawson Precision, or Chuck at Shooters Connection and order a few and go shoot. They have been supporting USPSA for many. many years.
  12. It should have been fixed the first time. Sounds like it went to the parts changer and sent back to you. Maybe it will be repaired the way it should have from the start.
  13. If you are comfortable with a 1911, carry it. That being said, when I say comfortable, I mean being able to draw, manipulate the safeties with out thinking about it. When your life is dependent on your fine motor skills, and they go out the window because you are not skilled with that weapon, or any weapon. Shooting in matches helps some, but it is not real life. Cardboard is not armed or does it shoot back. Hopefully you never face the real life situation that I am speaking of. Folks that has been there and done that will tell you that it is still a scary situation. You can not train enough. If you have access to any type of force on force training (simunitions) do it. Training your MIND can't be stressed enough. Mindset is a large percentage of winning the battle. It may not be you, but your family or others in danger. Be safe and shoot, then shoot some more.
  14. I shot a CMMG today at the range and it was in 10MM. I was shocked at how soft it shot. Did not expect the recoil impulse the pistol put out.
  15. Talked to Tim via PM, I will be calling him and get one ordered along with sending him my bolt for the cut. Thanks for the replies.
  16. I just asked for feedback on the superfeed . My barrel feeds ok , but I do like the idea. Thanks for the reply back. Have not had much response to the question, but Tim did PM me with some options.
  17. The 45 ACP runs a pressure on the average of 21,000 psi and the 9mm runs a average pressure of 35,000 psi, plus the smaller diameter projectile has increased gas velocity. 9mm's do work comps if the comp is designed correctly.
  18. Depends on what slide you have, you could sell your slide and get a 40 slide for minimal. Is it going to be a comp gun ?
  19. I have ran factory STI 9mm mags, with the Taran pads and the Grams springs and followers with no tuning at all and they ran fine. The only issue could be on the locking back, but they fed fine.
  20. The pressures a 45 runs at is one thing, but do be careful when you try a 9 or anything with more pressure. Flirting with disaster IMO. I have seen 45 comps back in the day break off and be projectiles down range. I have seen 38 super compensators blow out car windows. The car was a vehicle prop and the muzzle blast blew a hole in the hatchback glass, not from the bullet, but from the gases of the comp. I don't know how it would stay on a barrel. Good luck.
