    KKM Barrels

I bought kkm's for my 17 and my sons 34, replacing factory barrels. We've shot Atlanta arms reman and Stand 1 Armory chubbies with no issues. My first, limited testing of shooting groups offhand at 15 yards was inconclusive, no discernible difference in groups but a lot of that can be contributed to me. I didn't test again before shooting a 3gun match but the pistol shots weren't hard so no real test there. The real test for me came last week at a training session where I setup a difficult cof with small plates, mini poppers, ipsc papers all at 10 to 30 yards and a half size ipsc at 75 yards. I've set up a similar cof before and the small steels have given me a hard time, using the gun with stock barrel. This time was different, dramatically different. I was able to run the steels much faster with very few makeup shots. The 30 yard tombstone was a one shot, and the 75 yard plate rarely took more than 2 shots, dead center hold. My training partner even commented that my pistol shooting was really good. The only thing different from our last session to this was the kkm barrel. So while this was not a direct comparison of the two barrels, it was enough to tell me that the kkm barrel is a significant improvement in accuracy over the factory barrel.
  2. plenty of people shooting - not that many good gunsmiths Look up Mike Cooper at Select Arms. mike@selectarms.com
  3. I didn't change chokes to find the best For slugs since 99% of the time I'm running LM. But the Fiocchi 1 oz low recoil were the most accurate for me at 100 yards. At 50 yards I saw little difference with any of the low recoil slugs.
  4. yeah, but could I lift my right arm after that one shot?
  5. Howdy! Welcome to BE. You shot well last Sunday.
  6. No. I ordered a bunch of spare versa max parts from Numrich Gun Parts.
  7. I have this setup on my seekins and it is bad to the bone! Combined with a tuned gas block and I don't experience any noticeable recoil impulse. I had the lo mass bcg and captured spring on my last rifle and it worked, just not as good as what I'm running now.
  8. Here's my son celebrating his 21st birthday yesterday shooting the North Texas Multigun monthly match. Notice that he only drops one shell on his last reload, but picks up two to finish off the steels. I had shot the stage a few shooters ahead of him and had a failure to feed at the exact spot where he ran the gun dry. So my ejected round became his match-saver! So the moral of the story is...don't give up when you run out of ammo, there might just be a gift from the ammo fairy laying at your feet!
  9. Because as you described, there are a lot more variables that affect the force it takes to rotate the spinner. So unless someone wants to design and build an adjustable spinner I don't think it's reasonable to expect a spinner to be calibrated. Our MD has two spinners, one with big paddle like blades that you can rotate with one hit from some light target rounds at a safe distance, and one with smaller plates that takes 3 to 4 well timed hits. We had both of them presented to us this weekend. Most of the shooters rotated them unless they ran out of shells before getting to them. I know that our MD does take the time at stage setup to check proper operation of the spinner, grease the bearing / slide, and then shoot with different loads / distances to check that the average shooter will be able to rotate it.
  10. I haven't had the benefit of taking a class, since there hasn't been one offered in my short history of three gunning in my area and I can't seem to get a response when I ask about upcoming class dates. What I have had the benefit of is shooting local matches with some damn good shooters, a couple of whom have been very helpful in their coaching. I was invited to train with them a few times last summer when I was about 6 months into this and the tips I gained from them were invaluable. I know your situation because my son is in the same boat, except I provide ammo for him, he just has limited time for practice. Before TxMG we chose to skip our local March match and go train because he hadn't fired a shot since the end of February. What we do in practice is setup a stage and run it multiple times, videotaping each run and critiquing each movement, shot, transition, etc... We usually find that the transitions between guns, transitions between targets, and being ready to break that first shot immediately when we reach the shooting position, are the difference makers in our times. Obviously getting the hits is important and we don't go so fast that we miss too badly, but we push the boundaries of our shooting speed and see where we can speed up transitions. We practice/train at 100% speed, or more, then dial it back a good 10% or more at the match. I'd suggest you get with one of your top shooters and ask if you can train with him a time or two. If done right, a couple of sessions could put you on a path for a big difference in your match scores. Shooting matches is great experience but I think you have to pick certain aspects of your game to work on in training in order to really improve. That being said, you can do a lot of work on transitions, being ready to shoot coming into the box, etc...without ever firing a shot. TxMG was all about transitions and being ready to shoot as soon as you hit the port / box.
  11. I changed from a 12 round tube on my versamax to 10 and feel like the gun points easier, swings easier, and just generally feels much lighter.
  12. If any would be team needs a mediocre limited scope shooter I am looking for a team. All my friends shooting the match are in the same division as me.
  13. I don't know if they run intro classes but check out the West Houston shooters club. I shot a 3gun match with them last spring while in Houston on a biz trip and know they also do uspsa. If you're closer to College Station, look up Cawthorn Cartridge Club in Navasota. At worst, come up to Dallas and I can put you with a great instructor.
  14. doc, come out to the NTMG match next weekend and I bet you'll find some guys willing to help you out.
  15. The trick on the shell latch is to make the bottom "leg" of it concentric with the mag tube follower. Factory shape protrudes into the port too much. Look at yours and compare to the photos posted in the other threads. As far as the spring installation goes, they are either right, or really wrong. If you don't have them installed correctly you will have a very nice single shot machine. Don't ask how I know this....
  16. Versamax, port opened, lifted welded and shell latch modified. 2-3/4" dummy rounds. Doc, unless you have your matchsaver mounted really low on the handguard it shouldn't be in the way. I thought mine would be but it's not.
  17. Doc, forget about loading two from the 2.8 and make yourself learn quads. My 21y/o son shoots with me and has never done anything but traditional weak hand loading, until two days ago. I had him try the IPs and within 5 minutes he was quad loading.
  18. When I got my versamax I had the benefit of being able to compare it to James Darby's gun worked by 303 Arms and saw that even though I had a a welded C rums lifter and opened port, his gun loaded way easier. The difference was as you describe, resistance at the very end of the tube. I found that the shell latch on James gun had been shaped to be concentric with the shell follower where mine extended out into the port at more of an angle. Do a search for shell latch modifications here and you'll find the post where several of us have discussed this modification. It is quick and easy to do but makes a huge difference.
  19. I bought one for my nova when I first started because Nordic was out of stock for the one that fits. I would not recommend the Carlsons over a Nordic. It's cheap for a reason. I'd sell you my Carlsons for half that if you really want to try one.
  20. Howdy! Fun place to visit and learn stuff.
  21. Denise, any chance we could get Mondo to make some of those shirts (minus the staff labels) for competitors to pre-purchase?
