  1. I don't use the Safariland belt so can't help you with that specific part. You will want to be able to carry at least 12 shotgun shells on you, sometimes way more than that. I haven't met a shell caddy that I couldn't use, but some work better for me than others. I suggest you try out your friends / other shooters caddies and find the brand you like. Get a caddy for load-2 method to start learning on also. Two pistol mags should suffice for just about any match. A single rifle mag pouch is usually all you'll need but I have a double mag pouch as well, just in case. Pistol holster - just make sure it has good retention. You don't want to be running down a trail and have your pistol go awol.....
  2. Cabelas in Fort Worth should have a decent stock of ammo. If not, send me a message with what you need and I can help you out. I have a very good ammo supplier. Same offer goes for anyone else coming in from far away and needing 556 and 9mm.
  3. This argument has turned completely silly.
  4. Really!? The Johnson's put on an awesome match! There are several venues I regularly attend, but these are my "must shoot" matches. No question that the Johnson matches are top tier with lots of open terrain, wide variety of shooting skilz and the coolest shooting range in existence. Just as a preparedness thing for the Johnson match: always bring a sling, always bring some slugs and always bring some buckshot. I don't always use them, but I never show up without them. Also, if you are unsure where you are hitting at 400yds, there is a sight in range which goes out to 550. Man, if I was only 2 hours away from NRAWC you'd never get me away from there...
  5. not missing always helps the execution of the stage plan go better I have found that following a really good shooter on the course is really a benefit because they see things that I completely miss, like how to get 8 targets from one spot vs me having to post up 4 different times to get those same targets. Of course when the timer goes off I forget what they did and just start meandering through the woods...
  6. Starting out I'd recommend being able to carry 12 rounds, but get a longer tube on the gun. Having shot a gun with 7 rd capacity it really makes me appreciate the 12 rd capacity I have now! Also, you may decide you like one type of caddy better than another too so don't "invest" too much in one type to start. Yesterday we had a wonderful stage with 2 long range slug targets to start, followed by 20 knockdown steels along a 30 yard path, ending with 2 more slug targets. I carried 3 - 6 round twins caddies and a 4 round otto. Loaded them all except for one slug.
  7. True - I am a helluva lot faster loading twins than i was loading from my pockets!
  8. I don't think I am following this....the shells I use for three gun are only 2.75" long. If I mount my matchsaver 3-4" ahead of the most forward bolt location, how can the bolt possibly hit the shell and cause a discharge? The OP made the case for the shell not going completely in the chamber but getting caught somehow on the front of the ejection port when the bolt comes racing forward. IF all the stars aligned just wrong, the extractor on the bolt could contact the primer, thus causing detonation. As for the forward location of the matchsaverz, I have mine mounted so that the rear of the shell is not more than 1/2" forward of the ejection port. That still leaves a helluva lot of space between the back of the shell and the bolt handle in it's forward position.
  9. Good gawd man!!! Fighting Cock ??? It's ok but... I'll bring a bottle of Booker's to be shared after the FB3G. Surely Kurt's contributions are worth that much.
  10. slugs at 125 yards is not a test of the shooter anymore, it's more a function of luck. As far as clays with slugs - you may be somewhat limited by the placement of your targets to the tire backstops.
  11. I spent two hours yesterday with dummy rounds and my matchsaverz/versamax attempting to get the round in just the right position to where the extractor would hit the primer just so. After my experiment with it I'm no more concerned using the matchsaverz as I am port loading off a caddy or Twins. Hit the bolt release before the shell is in the chamber and something bad "could" happen. I'm more concerned about getting my fingers caught by the bolt than I am having a premature detonation. I'm not saying that it can't, or hasn't happened but I don't see that being any bigger risk than anything else we do.
  12. Bummer. A wise man sent me his list of top 15 things learned in 3-gunning. On that list is the command "always put the shotgun on safe when dumping". He had a dq for a similar experience but not from a matchsaverz.
  13. Wow this is taking a "turn" for the worse... Doesn't take long around here.... Maybe Pat can do a "tube whacking" session on the next 3GN program?
  14. They'll send an email with confirmation and payment info.
  15. Welcome! And from a fellow 3G newbie I can attest to not worrying about your standings compared to the masters. My first match I was in the 20's and now 8 months later, I'm in the 50's to 60's. My bank account balance has decreased at a much faster rate though...
  16. I shoot three long distance loads depending on the target array and wind. I have the strelok reticle diagram printed out for each load, laminated and keep that in my range bag. Once I know the target distances I can refer to the diagram and know my holds from the diagram. The visual of the diagram is quicker and easier for me to use than a chart. If the wind is high on match day then I can run strelok on the ipad or phone and have a current reticle diagram for those conditions. The strelok also allows you to change the magnification power and the reticle changes with it. So if you want to know where the stadia lines are at lower powers now you can.
  17. KentG, the info is on the SA website. Enter your SN and it tells you whether or not you're affected.
  18. Howdy! Texas is pretty big - where are you....
