  1. It's been 6 years since I've been in manufacturing and we used many titanium alloys. Some tougher than others but of the 29 alloys at the time more than half had applications in airframe and turbine engine components. It is even used as armor plating in the cockpit areas of the A10 ground attack jet and in other military aircraft. The grade I was looking at is Ti6246 which is a very common form that is heat treatable and has medium to high strength. Machining can be a difficult operation as it is with most Ti alloys. Modern tooling and careful attention to feeds and speeds have largely eliminated problems with older tooling designs.
  2. At the risk of heresy: I wonder if an adjustable sight could be molded from some kind of plastic? It really doesn't have any serious stress on it. That would be much easier and cheaper to make. Good point. Unless people start banging the sight into ports or barriers. I'm sure the sight makers have kicked around all types of materials to try and found changing out of steel is not worth it.
  3. Ok I'll go out on a limb and just throw this out there. I checked the weight of a Bomar adjustable sight without the screws in it and calculated the difference if it was made out of titanium instead of 4140 pre hard steel. The titanium sight would come out to .508 ounces less than the steel sight. I had to do a bit of machining on my caspian slide to get it down to 9.9 ounces and the titanium sight would bring a little over 5% weight reduction. Of course the cost would probably be twice as much but we are talking about an extra $75 without weakening the slide more. Would There be any buyers at a $160 price point? From what I have been reading reciprocating mass is a major component of muzzle flip. This might have a more direct influence on muzzle flip reduction than messing around with different powders and bullet weigh combos. Ok while your laughing, take some time to type a few words to enlighten me.
  4. Thanks for the pricing info. I should have just put it in my checked baggage. Would have been cheaper.
  5. I purchased a CK Arms Limited on Speed Shooters a few months ago that came with the plastic stippled grip. Very grippy. Don't know if you meant the metal grips.
  6. Can anyone shed some light on why it cost me $46.10 plus $10.47 for pickup at my house to ship 27 pounds of ammo from Chicago to Phoenix? I just purchased 1000 round of 5.56x45 and shipping came to $12.95. Does not make sense. I even opened an account with UPS but the shipping rates seem to be the same as if I used one of the third party UPS stores.
  7. My wife and I have been sleeping on a tempurpedic for three years. In the beginning we both felt warmer on it so we turned our thermostat in the bedroom (bedroom has its own zone) bown to 65 in the heating months any 70 in the a/c months. She uses a blanket and I sleep with just a top sheet. I always run warm and have enough body insulation to get government energy credits. There are memory foam mattresses that have gell pockets molded into them to help dissipate heat but I have no experience with them. There are also gel pads that fit over the mattress that claim to solve the hot spot problem. As a side note, we got the mattress to help my wife's hip pain. The mattress cured it but I have a sore lower back problem when getting up from day one.
  8. 7:30 pm central and practiscore is still down. Seems like the denial of service attack is especially nasty.
  9. I started using n320 a couple of years ago when powder supplies where tight. I heard good things about it and when a shooter at my club was liquidating a large supply of n320 for a sick elderly friend I jumped on 12 ponds at $30 a pound. I have learned to love everything about it except the price. I purchased 6 more pounds shortly thereafter. Since the I purchased a 8 pound jug of WST and found it to offer similar results except that it does not meter as well and I can't let my powder run too low. Chrono results are not as tight. All that said I will continue to use n320 until I run out and then use WST. If after full immersion in WST over a longer period of time in more shooting conditions and situations, I find it has drawbacks that I would not mind the extra cost of n320 to solve those problems, I will probably stay with WST.
  10. Great value when compared to full custom guns. I did have to pin the grip safety myself and lower the trigger pull from 2lb 12oz to 2lb. Also ground an angle on the ejector to clear the bullet in the magazine. It ran fine out of the box.
  11. What are your wst and long shot loads? I have both powders available and think titegroup is a bit dirty too For 180 gr. Montana Gold JHP fired out of a STI Edge type:WST. 5.3 grains with 1.180 OAL gives 170 PF Long shot 6.3 grains 1.18 OAL gives. 169 PF WARNING: these loads are not manufacturers loads and should be used with extreme caution at your own risk. As always start at a lower powder charge an proceed cautiously.
  12. Have a friend with a white Shepherd that he used tomato juice as a remedy. Ended up with a slightly pink dog that smelled like skunk.
  13. There is a range in Mchenry Illinois that uses ballistic rubber panels on the side walls. I am not a member I was just there for the range portion of my RO certification so I don't know how often they shoot into the side walls during matches. At my home range we use ballistic rubber panels mounted in steel tub and a frame with wheels to make them portable.
  14. Boy I feel for you. Our German Shepherd got sprayed 6 times in his 8 years. Three of those episodes it was point blank which brings it to a whole knew level of misery. We found the best method to wash off the oily stink is to use plenty of Dawn detergent and store purchased skunk shampoo. For around the eyes my wife's makeup removal wet wipes worked great. You'd think they would learn after a couple of encounters. Twice our dog did not care after he got sprayed he just grabbed the evil critters and gave them the death shake.
  15. There are so many. Here are the ones I tried: titegroup, n320, long shot, WST, clays. My favorites are WST & N320.
  16. If you are sure that you hit it in the area used during calibration then keep going if the RO doesn't stop you. At major matches you can ask for a calibration after you are finished. Local matches run without a official calibration pistol and ammo so it is still important to paint the steel between shooters.
  17. So far the have proven themselves reliable. They should have a long service life.
  18. Good job! Wish I had your will power. By the way, you can cut the inner and outer belts shorter and use a lighter to melt the frayed ends. As for the cowboy action belt find a saddle maker or even a good old fashioned cobbler to shorten things up.
  19. I took the free upgrade 2 weeks ago. Everything is working fine. Computer starts up faster and loads websites faster. Hated the 35 minute install of Windows 10.
  20. Our ounce a month shoot has a classifier which always seems to have some kind of position change. I don't know how to attach a file to my post but last month the classifier was CM 03-12 Ironsides. It requires the shooter to squat and shoot under a bar and around a wall then get up and move to the other side of the eight foot wide wall and squat again to shoot under the bar and around the wall. My knee problems got me a 1.988 hit factor. Really very frustrating. Even if I could get easier classifiers and make a B shooter, I still look like a D shooter on the running stages. I would love to get some lessons with Steve Anderson but he never comes to my area. Seems like there is no one within a two hour drive of me that is giving lessons.
  21. Well when I started three years ago and was improving I had visions of A class Limited in two years. That would have been as far as I probably would go at my age ( 55 yo now) Well D class took longer than I expected and now I'm stuck at middle C for the last two years. I purchased all the books and the right gun. Practiced dry fire and shoot 5 matches each month. Hit the sectionals and a couple of area matches each year. My occasional knee problems have become constant. So I guess goals are out for me. It's especially frustrating watching a guy 9 years older than me with worse vision than me make A in two years. I guess my goal is to maintain my middle C class status.
  22. Thanks. Most motors at Grainger are $85 or more.
  23. I reload about 22K of .40 and 5K of 9mm a year. I only want to wet tumble 2 or 3 times per year so capacity is important. The cement mixer did cross my mind.
  24. Where did you find the plans?
  25. Thanks. Do you know if he keeps them in stock or are they made to order? How long did you wait for yours?
