Zoomy, most good gunsmiths are swamped.  They are not accepting new work until they can clear a good portion of their backlog.   Here is a tip.  If you find a good local gunsmith and he tells you 8 months, ask this.    I can't leave the gun for 8 months.  If you have another barrel job and the fixture is set up in the mill, call me.  I'll be right over and you can do mine before you tear down the setup.  Quite possibly you jump the line.  Most smiths will do all the 1911 barrel work at the same time.  They won't finish any other work a customer ordered on the gun, but they will do the barrels while the jig is set up on the mill.

Thats a good idea. I know how that might work. I spent 33 years in the machining business. Started in tool and die then to setting up CNC machines and programming them. Saving setup time really adds up. If I had my own machines or access  I would have done the job myself. I still could but but Im opposed to using a file to do the job.

  2. I have a famous brand custom 2011 that needs a new barrel fitted. I asked the origional builder but they only build new guns and do not do any gun smithing, even on customers guns. I emailed several other builders and they don’t respond. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good gunsmith in the Phoenix, AZ area?

I tried a  gunsmith in the area to replace a thumb safety on the same pistol and that guy screwed it up and had to file it myself to get it to engage fully without 30 pounds of pressure. Im at a loss why I cant seem to find anyone with talent to do the job.

Hiperfire Hipertouch Eclipse is the go to for a lot of PCC competitors. It stands up to the beating of the blowback design. Very crisp trigger, weight can be changed with included springs, and it has a forceful reset which is an oft overlooked quality in a trigger.

Thanks for the info. My nephew just texted me that he has the Eclipse in his PCC and has had no issues in over two years. Looks like ill be getting one.

  4. I’m a PCC newbie who just purchased a CMMG Resolute 300 and looking into a drop in trigger.

I’ve built several AR-15 rifles and have experience  with quality piece part triggers that I fine tuned and installed but I thought I give a drop in a try.

I understand a major concern is the beating the triggers take in a open bolt design and wonder if the CMMG’s

Radial Delayed Blowback mitigates that problem.

I am considering the Rise Armaments Blitz. What others should I consider?

  5. I have a Super 1050 that I purchased used ( little over 1 year old). It was originally ordered set up for 9mm and never changed over to another caliber. Im switching to .40 S&W and need this to remove the tool head to switch the shell plate. I cannot remove the tool head mounting bolt. I've tried everything except a impact wrench which I'm hesitant to use.

even tried a socket wrench with a 12” cheater pipe. Unless its a left hand thread or there is locktite on why it should be that tight. Anybody else have this problem?

  6. I’m looking for a level 2 retention holster recommendation for a STI 2011 Pistol for 3 gun. I got a DQ when my AR stock hooked my pistol grip while abandoning it in a barrel and pulled the pistol from its Blade Tech holster. I need a holster that is compatible with the ELS system and offers a fast release.

  7. I have been considering a Dan Wesson SSC in .40. These are built exclusively for CZ Custom in Mesa. Since DW and CZ custom are reputable companies and the $1710 price tag it would be an economical way to get into USPSA single stack. While checking the specs I noticed that the weight with magazine is 43.2 oz’s making it illegal for single stack division. I know I can change the guide rod to aluminum and make weight  but I’m curious why CZ Custom would have a gun built to their specs and not make it legal weight for single stack.

The 9mmis even further into the red at 43.7 oz’s.

Does anyone have one of these?

My buddy has 1 on this 3 `gun rifle not only does it look sweet his shoots lights out

I sighted it in at 100 yards last week. Using cheep federal 55gr it shot .8” groups. With 69gr Gorilla ammo it shot .7” groups with a NightForce 1-8 scope. My rifle is 6 pound 7 ounces with the scope and mount and it shoots just as accurate as my 11 pound 2 ounce rifle with a 18” SPR barrel from Compass Lake Engineering.

  9. I ended up with the same Geissele mount and the NightForce NX8. I have the Mission First stock. Heads up shooting at 1X is fine but going prone at 8X leaves me searching for the reticle. The scope does not have a generous eye box but with practice I seem to be aligning things quicker.

  10. I already have a AR that I built 6 years ago that I have been using for my first four 3 gun matches. It has a 18” Compass Lake Engineering SPR profile barrel that gives me sub MOA groups using factory ammo. Problem is it weighs in at 11.2 pounds with a mounted 1-8 scope. The lightweight build I am using the BAD barrel on will weigh in at 4.95 pounds without optics. I think it should work fine on 500 yard steel targets and make for fast transitions on close in targets.

It's all going to come down to the geometry of the stock that you're using and your body mechanics getting into different shooting positions. Don't know if you're a podcast guy, but there's a recent episode of the 3 Gun Show that has a pretty good discussion on this topic:

    https://3gunshow.com/2018/04/03/182-long-range-preparation-with-reuben-aleckson/

tl;dr - focus on accommodating your head/eye alignment in the least-forgiving position, typically prone. Don't worry too much about getting a "heads-up" alignment while running and gunning on 1x, since the eyebox is going to be more forgiving on 1x anyway. There are a lot of guys who favor an extra-high mount that lets them go more heads-up, but they usually combine that with an adjustable cheekpiece that they can elevate to still get good and repeatable cheek weld in prone.

That said... 1.5" isn't all that high, so you'd probably be fine with that. You can still see through an optic that's mounted too high, even with less-than-perfect cheek weld... but if the optic's too low, you can't exactly force your face through the stock to get a good view. Plus, even if you don't have an adjustable cheekpiece on your stock, you can always add just a bit of height with a pad.

I know that this isn't what you asked, but a few anecdotal data points: my 3 gun rifle has a Magpul UBR stock, so probably a little thicker/more solid than an M4-style stock, but no cheek risers or anything. I've had no issues with eye alignment using Burris (1.6" centerline height) or Aero Precision (1.5" centerline height). My favorite thus far has been a Warne mount, which has a 1.43" centerline height.

Thanks for the advice. I was also looking at the Warne mount. Another question I have is whether a 20 MOA scope mount is necessary for ranges less than 600 yards. I notice that most of the NightForce mounts only come in 20 MOA.Here is the stock that I have.

  12. I recently purchased a NightForce NX 8 1-8 scope for my light weight 3 gun build and considering the Geissele scope mount. I like that Geissele number the saddle and caps before line boring the rings  to keep everything as accurate as possible and they have managed to keep the weight under 8 oz. The question is should I get the standard scope mount with the 1.5” centerline height or the high power version that has a 1.34 centerline height. The NX8 scope has a smaller exit pupil so getting a good repeatable cheek weld and my eye centered might be pesky when shooting long range at high magnification. In that situation I would think that the lower mount would help. Conversely at short rangers at 1X and a more heads up style shooting I would probably want the higher scope mount.

I am relatively new to 3 gun and probably spent money on the wrong equipment already. The scope height is a mystery to me and need some advice.

Can't speak to your question first hand, but a few months ago I asked one of the other shooters at our local match what bbl he was using (because he was doing so well on the long range stages).

He showed it to me and it was the 16" BAD light rigid ... but not as shiny as the pictures because it was well used.  I asked how well he liked the barrel and his response was that it's very accurate and he'd definitely recommend it for long range 3gun.  I didn't specifically ask about 500 yard shots, but we shoot out to 535 in our matches and he seemed pretty happy with his results.

Thanks, good to know because I pulled the trigger and bought one. Should have the rifle assembled in a couple of days.
