Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. I have settled on 6.6 gr WSF + 165 gr plated 0.400" FN (HSM/IQMetals) which gives about 1,050 fps in my Ruger SR40. The load burns very clean -- very little residue & clean cases. In my SAR B6P Compact 9mm & GLock 17 I use 5.1 gr WSF + 124 gr 0.355" RN plated (Everglades) for about 1,065 fps, but in the 9 I get a noticeable amount of fouling -- not bad, but more, relative to the 40 S&W. The powder loads are fairly bulky, making an accidental double-charge impossible (FWIW, my loading procedure largley eliminates that possibility anyhow).
  2. I just got a Glock 17 Gen4 and found it shoots too high with the factory fixed sights. I want it for defensive carry and the occasional match. From what I'm reading here, it looks like there is a clear solution to my problem. I have the standard Blade-Tech holster. So, I gather I should get the Dawson 017-012 set up (?). Any further hints/recommendations ?
  3. I just got a SAR B6P compact in 9mm & have not gotten out to the range yet, but... I will eventually be reloading for it & am interested if anyone here has any experience with this pistol, which is basically a CZ75 clone. I gather that a 124-125 grain bullet is preferred over a 115 gr. I have a lot of HP-38 and WSF powders on hand, and will probably be using plated bullets, most likely from HSM/IQMetals. Any hints or suggestions will be appreciated.
  4. I ordered a 550B on 1/29 and it arrived yesterday 3/19 -- 7 weeks waiting time. When I ordered it, I was advised the wait would be 6-8 weeks.
  5. Being a natural worry-wart, I am concerned about long-term chemical reactions with the brass (& possibly w/ powder inside case) due to media additives. Are they really necessary ?

    primers...

I ordered 6 bricks of large pistol (CCI 300) from Cabela's online last week and just got notice that they have been shipped. Not cheap: 4.8 cents per primer, delivered, but at least I won't have to sweat getting them for a while (coupla weeks, anyhow ).
  7. ....and oh, fiddler, not *all* guns are named 'Betty' -- my Remington 870's name is Lucille .
  8. You guys are right on all counts. Glynnm45 -- I fear it's too late for me; I have already been mercilessly sucked deep, deep down into that hole, for good or ill. FWIW, I would never use a load that I pulled off a forum without checking some published data on it first. I've seen examples of what CMD-KY is talking about, and the mistakes went uncorrected for quite a while on the forum (not this one).
  9. Hey GlynnM45 -- naming guns is no more twisted than naming cars . Now, if I said I had named my lawnmower, you might wanna send over a couple guys with a big net. I have been looking at manuals -- I was just interested in the reaction I would get to the question, in particular, personal experiences. Looks like a lot of votes for W231/HP-38, but I b'lieve Nadine might like WSF and Longshot too .
  10. What are your minimum inventory-on-hand levels going to be ?
  11. On a recent trip to a local supply store, I spotted a lone 1 lb bottle of Autocomp sitting on the otherwise empty powder shelf (that should have told me something ). Being in the middle of a local powder drought, I thought: "How bad could it be ?". So I grabbed it. I shoot 38 SPL, 40 S&W and 45 ACP. Poking around on forums, it appears this powder is a dog at Hodgdon's published loads. Does anyone like Autocomp in any of these handguns ?
  12. Anybody use AutoComp with 165 gr ?
  13. I've gotten a lot of plated 0.400 bullets from: http://store.iqmetals.com/hsmplatedhandgunbullets.aspx Their delivery has been fairly prompt, too.
  14. Pistoleros' Pop-Quiz for the day: Match up the following handguns with the powders *on hand*, and recommend loads for each: Handguns: Lulu: Ruger LCR 38 SPL +P using 0.357 158 grain FN plated bullet (HSM) Nadine: Ruger SR40 40 S&W using 0.400 165 grain plated FN bullet (HSM) Mona: PARA-Ordnance GI Expert 45 ACP using 0.451 230 grain RN bullet (HSM) [...and no, I don't work for HSM ] Powders *on hand*: W231/Hp-38 WSF AutoComp Longshot The girls send their thanks .
  15. According to my confirmation e-mail, my total cost per brick will be $47.77 (delivered, to Centralia, Washington). Ouch. But waddayagonnadooo? Gottashoot.
