  1. Hello guys just wanted to drop in to introduce myself as I am new to the forum and relatively new to shooting competition in general. I have participated in about 5 or 6 local IDPA matches and I am hooked! I shoot a 5" M&P Pro 9mm in the SSP class. I look forward to interacting with you guys and learning much more about the sport!

Greetings from a fellow NC'er - up here in Burlington and hope to see you at a match some time! Nice shooting set-up, that will help you improve for sure!!

  2. Hello from Burlington NC! As the title states, I'm looking for advice on what's the best production 9mm bullet for practice and competition (note - I'm not a reloader and the 125 grain is appealing to me).

That said, I'd like to thank the contributors of this forum; your posts are full of wisdom and valued by an avid researcher like me! You've taught me much, and I think the best way I can show you what I learned is to tell you how I applied the knowledge to my 1st gun purchase in over 20 years.

Before I do that, I wanted to share my goal with you: become an USPSA "A" class pistol shooter in Limited class within 24 months (or less - LOL).

As for my firearms background, I shot quite a bit in my late teens and early 20's; weapons at that time were a Glock 10mm (1st gen - yes I'm in my early 40's - LOL) and a modified Colt 1911 that I loved (hence the limited class goal and gun purchase). Back then I was a decent shot and could hit just about any target within 30 - 40 yards, However, that was over 20 years ago and I have not shot since then.

If you are wondering why I bought a new firearm, its because a friend recently invited me to a 3 gun match where all of my great shooting memories came flooding back! I decided after the match that I'd been missing out and its time to start shooting again.

    Here's what I purchased:

    - Dawson Precision STI 9mm Edge (w/ extra tuning performed by Dave)

    - 2 high cap Dawson tuned STI mags (I'm fairly handy - but I thought it would be best to let the experts tune the mags this time)

    - Blade Tech Holster (w/ adjustable ASR belt)

    - Safariland ELF belt & velcro inter belt

    - Slide glide heavy (incase I load it into my shooting bag it won't melt away in the summer time as its resistant to higher temps)

    - Need to figure out good mag holders for the belt

To prevent me from blowing my investment, I sought some experts to help me improve my skills. First, I'm taking a basic pistol education class and purchased some coaching session with Mike Hinshaw of Handgunners here in Burlington. Next, I've purchased "Championship Shooting: A Proven Process for Success At Any Level" to supplement my understanding of fundamental shooting concepts. I am process thinker and the methods and approaches outlined within the book seem solid and applicable.

Finally, the BAMAirsoft guys are very impressive, so I purchased a number of their swingers, targets, and plates racks to help improve my game at home since i may only get to the range once or twice every few weeks.

Once I get all of this equipment after the 1st of the new year, I'll post monthly updates on my progress.

Did I spend some money, yes I did; but I've worked hard since I was 14 and have been saving since then. Life's too short not to have some fun and I plan on having lots on the way to achieve my goal!!

Thanks for reading my post and sharing your knowledge!

    Will
