  1. Smith Elite are great for the money too, I think they have the highest impact rating for non goggle safety lenses. They saved my eyes at least 3 times overseas. They also make a pair that go under ear pro very comfortably. Oakley are great too, I used to wear m-frames before I got the smiths. If you have insurance that covers glasses, or don't mind dropping 3 to 4 hundred... Rudy Project all the way...

You only get one set of eyes... spending some money on good protection when you subject yourself to as much exposure as we do is just common sense.

  2. So I busted out the files today because I had an hour to kill, did some blending and messed with the ignition group. Did a little stoning and got the trigger breaking very cleanly at just under 3.25lbs, Reset is sort, over travel is minimal... so all in all the trigger is SWEET. Really couldn't be happier with it at this point.

So that gets to blending... I didn't have a bunch of time, and it is slow going with the files, but i'm getting there.

My biggest bummer at this point has been the finish of the TM frame. As you can see in the picture above, some gap on the thumb safety and Lots of rough spots that i just wont be able to get perfect.

A prefect example of how a rough spot on the frame makes this one impossible to look pretty without adding material.

  3. I'd be interested to know who's mags, extensions, followers, etc. Caspian's are 18 max, as are the Tanfos that fit. If I knew you could get 20 round mags for the Hi-Cap, I'd already own one.

So here are the four mags, all completely reloadable to 20. I figured Rich made them since they have some nice touches like the engraved numbering, but who knows, I know Rich is here on the forums so maybe he can chime in. APL-G35 was the previous owner and he might be able to shed some light on the mags.

I compared them as best I could to what Caspian is offering right now, and it looks like they are the same. It also looks like these have Grams Followers and springs.

  4. Glad you like it mulrick. Have you got to shoot it yet?

I did, ran it in a local action pistol match... its all steel and I actually had one of my cleanest matches. Time was nothing to brag about but double taps on the bonus "a zones" were easy with the extra sight radius. I ran some minor .40 and it was soft... like my ruger 22/45 soft...

The sweet trigger definitely helps as well. I still have a few things to get used to in order to speed things up, but that will come with practice. But in the end I couldn't be happier! This gun is def more accurate than I, the 6" is a little funny at first but the more I shoot it the more I like it. I really like the Caspian frame in hand, just feels right. Its a little 2x4ish off the bat, but so much slimmer than a 2011, once you shoot it you kinda forget the boxyness.

  5. So I just built a 1911 over the couple days off for Christmas. You can check the thread out over here

I used an 80% from Tactical Machine... lets just say its rough. If it were not for the fact that I live in CA, Caspian or STI would be the way I would go if I could not find any Wilson Combat... which I think personally are the nicest off the shelf but hard to find.

Thats not to say you cant build a nice gun with the TM 80%, you can, I am just spending a lot more time with the files.

  6. So As it sits right now, I'm playing with a couple grip ideas, and a ton more blending needs to happen, but it is getting closer. Firing pin stop, firing pin, and extractor have all been fit now...

  7. So this year has been relatively a good one as far as work goes... Normally the holidays have me scrambling to close out a couple deals before the end of Q4. So needless to say I normally stay busy...

Not this year, I actually found myself with a couple days, and as my friends would say "because he's obviously not right in the head" I decided I'd build a 1911.

Now before a bunch of people jump on here to tell me to just go buy "X" gun... Well go pound sand... In the nicest possible way of course... I don't want to hear it, and that is not the point of this.

So I had a bunch of parts that have been collecting dust, along with a couple 80% Tactical Machine frames laying around so I said i would give it a go.

Now before I go too much further, let me say that I live in CA, so just going out and buying a frame isn't possible, so hence the 80% route. This thread however is not going to be about the 80% stuff since that could go off on its own tangent in itself. But if you want to learn more check out their website Tactical Machine.

So I headed to my buddies house, threw the frame up on the jig, got a refresher in machine shop 101.. probably had been 15 years since I had run one. and with that I cut the Hammer and Sear holes, Frame rails, and barrel bed. Sorry but I didn't take pictures of this since I was more concerned with making my cuts correctly.

So at this point it is Christmas day and the rest of the family was off doing who knows what, so I decided id sit on the deck and start looking everything over, double check all my parts and get organized. As you can probably tell, the majority of the parts are Wilson Combat "Bullet Proof" stainless (which just means I am doing a ton of fitting.) The hammer and sear are the EGW billet, and the trigger is a Nighthawk custom. Magwell and mainspring are ed brown, as is the plunger tube.

    IMG_0232_zps068ac879.jpg

The slide is a 9mm Carbon steel Commander length, with a target rib and Novak sights. The Barrel is a Bar-Sto 9mm bull with no ramp cut.

    IMG_0233_zps90016f63.jpg

I spent the better part of 5 or 6 hours on Christmas day fitting the slide, trigger, thumb saftey, Mainspring housing and beaver tail. At this point my thumbs were practically bleeding and I needed a break so I put it all away to go eat some prime rib with the family. Sure enough a couple hours went by and I had it all out again, this time in front of the tv. I fit the sear, disconnector and hammer. and got it to drop the hammer before I called it a night. The ignition group works but needs more tuning. Breaks right about 4lbs now.

Come Friday night, I decided to break out the files and again spent 4 or 5 hours filing and fitting. I stoned the tops and sides of the rains .001" to get the slide to fit the frame like glass. And I began the barrel fitting process. Now As it stands I am waiting on a couple parts (barrel hood guage from EGW and a barrel lug cutter from Brownells) to finish the barrel fit, as well as I need to throw the slide on the mill again to cut the relief cut for the reverse guide rod plug.

I didn't manage to snap any pics of it together yet, but Ill update as I go along. Id say my about 80% done at this point, its just fine tuning everything and final fit before I put a finish on it. I have some ideas of where I want to take this, and it is ambitious... but stay tuned.

  8. Congrats on the Hi-Capacity. That's what I'm going to end up with when I replace my current Limited gun. BTW, unless they fibbed on the timeline, Caspian will have a bunch of brand new 18-round reloadable 40 mags on the shelf starting today. I think they were around $75 each. The last time they had them they sold out almost immediately, so move quickly.

Thanks for the heads up... that's amazing pricing, I'm luck in that I also got 4 tuned mags that hold 20 each, but I could always use more.

  9. Thanks, finish is wearing from holster draws, but otherwise this is perfect. I actually might have it send out for coating in some sort of PVD... seems like there are plenty of new coating options with colors all over the place, other that the old black or gold.

  10. Finally got around to taking a few pictures. Rich sure builds nice guns.

I particularly like some of his detail work like his checkering on the rear of the slide, trigger guard and the slide lightening cuts. All in all an extremely tight gun, super soft shooting. The trigger is a thing of beauty.post-43844-141970254906_thumb.jpgpost-43844-141970256998_thumb.jpgpost-43844-141970258909_thumb.jpgpost-43844-141970260705_thumb.jpgpost-43844-141970263643_thumb.jpgpost-43844-141970265451_thumb.jpg

  11. nice tools from evergladesammo. might pick them up for my 2 tactical machining 80% builds. thanks for sharing that info BrianATL

I just built a TM 80%... save your money, I never used the everglades stone jig, my slide is like glass. After I machined the rails I used a bench stone to take .001 off the top of the rails and I was G2G. use that money for the Barrel lug jig/cutter for your barrel... way better use of money.

  12. Awesome guys, I picked up a Bladetech for the mean time, but I'll probably return it quite frankly.

I got in touch with Steve at COM and it sounds like he can build me exactly what I want. Actually I cant say enough about Steve. I called after hours and he spent the better part of 20 minutes asking questions and finding out exactly what I want, even ordering custom kydex for my color scheme. Turns out we went to the same college with the same degree, he used to shoot at my old club and even knew some of the members. Best part is he is thinking he will be able to build it for me on Thursday (it's Monday night) and in the mail after I approve the pictures. Sounds like Steve is doing good by Rich's legacy and I couldn't be happier supporting someone like that.

    Thanks guys

  13. Funny, 5 years ago I wanted to get into 3 gun and started putting together a budget setup. I started with my Winchester 1300 that I already owned ($250, maybe i don't know, I bought it almost 15 years ago) I added a +5 tube and swapped the barrel for a 22" VR ($200.) Ran my Glock 22 (police trade in $400) and over the next year added a bunch of Zev parts ($300ish) TTI basepads x3 ($120.) For my rifle I was running my lightweight AR-15 Carbine that I already owned(this was actually a really nice DD gun, probably $1500, iron sights.)

I shot this setup for a year before the gear bug hit. Now I run a tricked Versamax competition tactical (probably $1800 into it now) an very nice Noveske 18" comp rifle ($2500+another $1300 for glass) and a custom 2011 pistol ($$$$$$$ I dont want to talk about it :surprise: ) I run a bladetech modular belt system with Invictus Practical caddies and bladetech pouches (I bet I'm nearing the $500 mark on that along with holsters etc) I got to this point buying too many thing only to realized they didn't work for me. I'd say hardware wise I'm in the hole well over $10k but honestly that's a drop in the bucket compared to the cost of ammo.

Now I say all of this to say that you can "get into" 3 gun on a budget. Run what you brung for a few matches and find out what works. Don't get too caught up in your gear for the first 5 or 6 matches, just focus on getting better with what you have. you'll get hooked like the rest of us and then you can start planning gear purchases. Replace items that are holding you back once you are running on the edge of what is possible for your gear, Additionally the classified here seem to have lots of gear pop up right after major matches. Watch the major match announcements and then hit the classifieds the week after and lots of good gear buys pop up from prize tables.

Oh and welcome to the sickness!

  14. Man, you hombres have it bad there. If I were in your shoes I would get as many raw frames as I could. Seems to me that in the not too distant future selling one of those frames in state FTF in accordance with the laws would make enough profit to build up a nice pistol.

    Good luck!

I hear you... the biggest bummer is that the state of CA only allows you one handgun per 30 day period. so unfortunately this was my last DROS of the year.

on a side note I have found out that out of state grandparents can gift through in interfamilial transfer. Luckily my grandfather is still with us and lives in NC so I should be able to have him gift me a couple over the next year.

Good on ya for keeping up the shooting sports there in the land of sunshine and f-tarded politicians.

Thanks, Sad part is that CA actually has a ton of people interested in competitive shooting sports but our laws are really hurting the "new" guys to the sport. We have such an amazing 3-gun club here and some great USPSA ranges, but attendance from the younger crowd is definitely down.

  15. Assuming you have a table to put the rifle on (rifle pistol)

Put a full size IPSC at 25 yards. Start rifle at low ready, 2 rounds to the head, rifle on safe on table, draw your pistol and 2 rounds to the body. Go as fast as you can, all you need to do it get hits

If there's no table you could still do this (rifle only)

Stick 6 blaze orange 2 inch dots in a horizontal row right next to each other, push them out to 25 yards and it will simulate shooting a 8 inch plate rack at 100 yard

Great advice if you want to train at an indoor range. 22's with the little shootnsee 2" dots are great plate rack practice. I put the 2" ones at 5 yards and shoot with my Ruger 22/45 which does a good job at simulating a rack.

Just ask the RO before, or have a conversation with them. Most indoor ranges have rules about drawing from concealment or a holster, as well as gun transitions. Some even limit the number of shots/no double taps... But if you explain your intentions to the staff they sometimes will allow you to run you drills at one of the far ends of the range.

  16. So I have a Caspian hi cap framed 6" limited gun built by Rich over at Canyon Creek Customs. its the newer style (genII??) with the square trigger guard.

I'm thinking about using it in 3 gun this year and ditching the Glock. I run the Caspian in a double alpha racemaster for uspsa, but I was hoping for something with a little more protection for going prone and getting into and out of tighter spots.

I run a bladetech setup currently for 3 gun with the glock, so I was wondering if anyone out there knows what holsters might fit? I have calls into some of the custom guys but most are 6-10 weeks backlogged.

    Thanks in advance

  18. nice, now where are the pictures

Still have to wait 2 more days in this ass backwards state... so I can cool off, and not go commit a crime with a $3K custom pistol designed for competition that i just bought as opposed to the 40+ firearms I already own...

  19. I have not seen it in my lifetime. But I have seen the pens where the live birds were kept at a local club. These pens were torn down many years ago. But My point is that live bird shooting was once an acceptable practice in the USA, California no less.

I am neither for or against it. I agree that the Enos forum is not for this topic.

Here are a couple of interesting links on the subject:

    Best regards,

    Keith

My local childhood Trap club in CA still has the "Traps" that they used to keep the pigeon's in and still used them occasionally I think into the late 80's maybe even early 90's.

I seem to remember the shoots as a kid. You paid something like 5 or 10 dollars a "game" which I think was a bird until you miss or are the last guy standing. Winner got double his money and the rest went tot the club as a fundraiser. There were lots of side bets and money being thrown around back then. I specifically remember a former white house resident who frequented the event when in town. It was not uncommon for some of the guys in the club to be taking their shots from way beyond the trap field on the hill to the rear left of the trap house... about 100 yards. It was definitely competition shooting...

I still belong to that club, the tradition is alive and well still, just switched to a more "PC" version with Turkey Shoot. We do them 4 times a year and it is a total blast, but some of the old timmers still talk about the days when the targets had a mind of their own... I miss enough of the bright orange type that go on a relatively normal path so I'm fine with how it is.

Edit:I also believe there are plenty of other place to talk about hunting and I like that BE keeps the forums on topic. However I as a student of history and someone who is naturally curious, I like to know the origins of competitive shooting.

  20. Thanks for all the advice guys.

I ended up going the used route since deal came along that I just couldn't pass up.

Ill post pics when I pick it up, but I ended up getting a 6" Caspian hi-cap in .40. Built by Rich over at Canyon Creek Customs.
