Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. I shot a Winchester SX2 in the weekend and it seemed like a pretty decent gun, I didn't really get much time behind it but it seemed ok, I was wondering why does no one mention it anymore, is it like an 1100, yesterdays technology? There hasn't been an SLP thread on here for quite a long time, but a few years ago it was the gun that everyone was raving about. What happened to the SLP/SX guns being a 3 gun option?
  2. In the US do you guys get these? http://www.fabarm.com/web_eng/dettaglio-prodotto.asp?i=148 Fabarms are quite popular in NZ for Waterfowling and the one I owned was very reliable and the build quality is excellent as you would expect from an Italian gun. I used a similar Fabarm for a while and regret selling it, it had a nice loading port and a clever gas system that cycled light and heavy loads reliably. It is a bit lighter than my VMT. Some one in the US should import them.
  3. Lighter recoil would surely be considered a pretty big benefit?
  4. Best gun is a Versamax with some mods. Lifter and Carbon Arms tube. It is the softest shooting, and has a great loading port, fast to shoot and very fast to load.
  5. I'm 6'5 and 240 and its not that recoil bothers me it just slows me down, I also don't have the time or money to practice like a pro can, so in the real world the reduced recoil works for me. I run a comp on my AR like most do, I would not run without a comp as it would slow me down, thats the parallel I see with an inertia vs gas (Read VMT) system. I don't find the extra weight makes any noticeable difference in my gun handling after all its only 1lb and most of that is between the hands not out front where it actually affects swing speed. Like I said I hope my competition run Inertia guns.
  6. I have to say a large part of my purchase decision was based around being able to cycle all loads and have a soft shooting gun. We have a few guys using Stoegers in NZ and they are very reliable just like the M1/2 that they are a copy of, but they kick kick like hell compared to a VMT or even a 930. And that to me had a major influence on my purchase; the greatly reduced recoil impulse allows me to shoot faster and more consistently. As an aside my previous two guns were a Beretta 1200 FP (Inertia gun that was reliable with loads it liked) and a Benelli M4. The M4 is a great gun with a very, very smooth loading port right out of the box but the raised rifle type sights did not suit me. That said it is a very fast gun and like the VMT recoil is minimal.
  7. I get told by Benelli shooters all the time that Benelli is best and from a point of view of quality they may be right. I have seen a couple of M1's used by hard core waterfowlers die, but they were shooting heavy 3 inch steel loads. What I just cannot get past however is how much softer shooting my VM is than an M2. For me that equates to faster times. I accept that I may need to run a Benelli Hammer in mine at some stage but in any form of competitive sport the best tools are very rarely "off the shelf". That said I run my VM as it came with a new design lifter that has been polished, otherwise stock. I used the shim kits to get the fit right and now I just shoot it, so far I have shot 19 slabs (250 rounds per slab) or 4750 rounds without issue. I have had exactly two failures both were failures to eject on old 2.5 inch paper cased loads. When I see newbies on the range getting told to buy a Benelli because its the only gun I just smile as I truly believe as a mid level shooter I have a competitive advantage. I am shooting against shooters who mostly use stock guns and while most of them get points on me with the pistol I drag it back with rifle and especially shotgun. I really don't care to much for brand fanboys, (Apple users are definitely in this category) I just use what works best. To me the VM with soft recoil allows me to get fast splits and I miss less because I don't have to work so hard to stay on target. So yeah, buy a Benelli especially if you are a 3 Gun shooter in New Zealand, suits me just fine.
  8. I bought one and it was too short, and while it fitted it was very stiff, it certainly needed some filing/polishing to make it work correctly.
  9. My VM tactical got its first clean at just over 1000 rounds, its only bobble was an old 2.5 inch paper hull load. I am now well over 2500 rounds and it still only has had one clean. The Benelli system is excellent no one can argue that but two local waterfowl shooters have broken their Benellis due to a diet of heavy 3 inch steel, now I know thats not what we shoot in the games we play but it is interesting all the same. The remington gas system is simple and I think its this simplicity that will keep it running for a long time. It was interesting the comment made about Benellis running better ammo. Where I shoot the guys who run Benellis have to run a 1 1/8 light field load as minimum to guarantee reliable cycling yet with a VM I can run the cheap 1oz and 7/8 loads. So perhaps quality is an issue as we know for a fact that the cheap loads won't reliably cycle a Benelli, ergo they aren't used. FYI. In NZ most people run stock guns as we don't have many (Any) smiths here who know how to tune guns for this game.
  10. Its finally on the Remington Website price is $1699, no detail photos of the rear sight or the updated lifter unfortunately.
  11. I went through this about a year ago. I wanted a gas gun for the reduced felt recoil but I also wanted reliability. I owned and shot the following guns: Beretta 1201 FP, Remington 1100, Older Benelli M1 and a Mossberg 930, Fabarm XLR Tactical. Finally I got a VMT. To me its the best gun because of the reliability, the soft recoil, the long loading port that allows load 2 reloads. It shoots slugs accurately, it cycles everything I have put through it and the soft recoil just allows me to concentrate on going fast.
  12. I agree with Brian comments on instinctive shooting, I feel I am at that level with my VM now. When I combine that with reduced felt recoil my splits show my shot to shot times are faster. I spent years shooting a Beretta 1201 FP, which to those who have not seen one was an inertia operated gun that had a 6 + 1 mag capacity. I shot it so much it was instinctive as well. What tripped me up with that gun was the recoil, every now and again it would give me a good kick probably due to me not shouldering it correctly, this often meant a miss as well. I would then slow down to bring my accuracy back up again. The point is moving to the VM it took a while to find that fit, but now I just cant see myself going back to an inertia gun, to me low felt recoil makes everything else fall into place.
  13. I shot a Vinci with some 3 inch hunting loads and I felt the recoil was nasty. Compared to my Versamax it was like night and day. Now I realise that the gun will mainly be shooting much lighter loads but I suspect it will kick a lot more than a gas gun.
  14. I had an M&P pro and I liked the way it felt, I didn't mind the stock trigger and it was super reliable. The downside was that it shot low no matter what I fed it. I had to change the fron sight and eventually the rear as well. It grouped ok but even on a rest it was still a 3 inch gun at 25 yards. I the bought an SP01 my scores jumped immediately and it is just as reliable but most of all it groups much better than pro and shoots where it points. I don't find the DA first shot to be much of an issue, not as easy as the Pro for the first shot but the subsequent shots are easier and perhaps a bit faster.
