  1. I have had my Mossberg JM Pro for a couple of years now and love the gun. You hear good and bad things about it, but most people don't seem to know what needs to be done to the the gun running. So I figured I'd post up what I have learned. Not so much wanting to get into the go faster mods with this post. Mainly want to help people who are having issues with the 930's. There are 3 things you need to do to get a JM Pro running right. They are all very simple to do, and can be done by just about anyone if you have a few basic tools. (this is assuming something isn't broken on the gun) 1. 1st thing you should do is throw away the follower that comes with the JM Pro and get something like the GG&G follower. The stock follower works great until you add an extension to the tube. Then it sucks. It will get caught up on the edge were the 2 tubes meet as it will always be a slight difference in size. The GG&G follower has a beveled front edge that keeps it from catching. The 1st 3 or 4 rounds will feed fine (depending on if you have the 22" or 24" gun), then it will seem as if there is no pressure on the shells. This is because the stock follower is caught up at the junction. The newer guns have a different follower than mine did, but it still sucks. 2. Grind flat the front end of the recoil spring that is in your stock. I used a dremel with a grinding wheel to grind it flat. This will prevent it from digging into you recoil spring plunger which it can do very quickly. If you have burrs on your plunger, then you should also round off the rear edge of it. I put the plunger in my drill, turned it and and ran it against a file to round it off. These burrs can catch on the sides of the recoil spring tube and slow the gun down, causing misfeeds, failure to feeds, failure to eject, etc. My gun ran great until about 1200 rounds then started having big issues. This was the cause of most of my problems. This can also happen very quickly with the 930's. Helped a friend tune his gun last month that was new. he had less then 200 rounds through it and his plunger was starting to burr already. My gun just seemed like it ran slow. Here is a slow motion video of my gun when it started acting up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajZHs4GKKlI&list=UUddrzgDitsWidjpwTUZmCiw Here is a pic of what my recoil spring plunger looked like after 1200 rounds. I was also having the next issue, which is the feed from the tube problem, but wasn't able to diagnose it till I fixed the recoil spring plunger. 3. Polish the front edge of the carrier latch. This is the part that releases shells from the tube as the gun cycles, or you press the release. It can be sharp, and will catch on the ammo and cause the gun not to feed. If you are having problem getting the 1st round to 2 to feed from the tube when it's full, you are having this problem. Took me 10 minutes to round the edges off with a flat file. This can happen with some guns out of the box, or like mine after 1200 rounds. It doesn't happen with all guns, but it's such an easy fix that I would do this anyways. Brownells has a good tutorial on it here: http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/lid=1583 ... be-Problem 95% of the problems I have seen with these guns over the past couple of years has had to do with 1 of these things, or a combination of them.
  2. I love my 930. It did have some issues, but they were easily fixed. Mine runs 100% now. That said, if I had $1500 to get a shotgun, I'd go with a Benelli M2.
  3. I can tell you they have changed a few things on the gun. Shooting friend had issues with his from the very beginning. Mossberg sent him a lot of replacement parts. I can tell you that his trigger group was different that the replacement, and so was the carrier latch. The differences were very subtle, and you had to have the parts side by side to even notice. So yes they have made changes.
  4. I have the Marine Spacer in my gun. I have been told by many that I have a very fast trigger finger. Some have said I was about as fast as Jerry. (to bad I don't have his other skills to go with it) I have never out run the gun. I have outrun my eyes and shot faster than I could get good hits, but that's due to my skill level, not the equipment.
  5. Anyone here shoot Open or Unlimited Division in 3gun?I transitioned to USPSA Open last year, and am in the final stages of add on's for my rifle and shotgun to shoot Open / Unlimted in 3gun. My set up is: Rifle is a custom build from the ground up: Spike's lower and upper RRA LPK HiperFire 24C MagPul UBR, trigger gaurd, MIAD+ grip JP Silent Captured Sping Adams Arms rifle length XLP gas piston system with low mass bolt carrier Voodoo bolt Alpha 18" mid contour SS match barrel Samson Evo Rail SJC Titan comp Bushnell PCL 1-4 EOTech 512 offset MagPul BAD lever Devil Dog Concepts Hard Charger (Side charging handle conversion) Pistol started out as a Glock 22 Zev heavy brass magwell Zev Ultimate Fulcrum Trigger Zev tungsten guide rod and springs Bobby Carver optic mount KKM barrel with Bobby Carver 4 port comp CMore slide ride SJC slide racker Shotgun is a Mossberg 930 JM Pro XRail Match Saver Southern Kentucky Tactical welded lifter GG&G optic mount I ordered a Southern Kentucky Tactical predrilled carrier latch so I can add an oversized magazine release. I also ordered a Primary Arms red dot. I opened up the loading port myself Pics:
  6. RobPort, that's exactly what it sounds like your issue was. The carrier latch is very east to take out. Just be careful with the retention pin as it can fly out.
  7. The added weight isn't much of an issue to me. Carried an M60E3 (18lbs) and an M240G (24lbs) as a Marine. My 3gun AR is right around 12lbs empty as well.
  8. One of my shooting buddies went to a skeet range to get fitted for his 3 gun shotgun. The changed stocks, and changed the comb (angle) of his stock. One thing the instructor also recommended, was to add weight to the butt stock since the guns we use in 3 gun are very nose heavy, especially when loaded with 10 or 12 rounds. Kinda made sense to me as I did the same thing with my rifle. I added a MagPul UBR stock because it's heavy and balanced the rifle better. Instructor said the gun should balance 4 1/2" in front of the trigger guard when empty. Mine balanced several inches ahead of that. Took some lead fishing weights I had, wrapped them in a rag and put them in the stock. Then took extra cloth and shoved it in to keep the weights from moving. I added 7.9 ozs. Still need to add a little more to the rear to get it to balance were he said, but I have to say it felt like a different gun. I haven't had the chance to shoot it yet, but doing dry fire practice and loading practice I like the way the gun swings and feels with the added weight. I will likely get some more weights to put in before shooting to to get the balance point were he recommended. He said to use lead or steel shot in a heavy duty zip lock bag and also to shove some rag pieces in first so the weight is as far back as possible. I don't have any lead shot, might have to pick some up. Worst case if I decide I don't like it, I can always take it out.
  9. I have only seen the Ghost shotshell holders once at last years Super Shotgun match at the Wyoming Antelope Club. The guy who was using them was from Canada, and said they were much more common up there. They were father apart than most other quad load caddies, but could be used for quads. better suited for dueces. Are you looking to do quads or dueces? For dueces I use the Chameleon Load 2 belt. They have a version that holds 20 shells for $95, and a version that holds 28 for $115. For being only $20 more, get the 28 rounder. http://www.chameleon-fabrics.com/ipsc-3-gun-stuff/loadtwo-belt
  10. Sounds to me like you have a feed from the magazine tube issue which is not uncommon with the 930's. Brownells did a write up on how to fix the issue. I started to develop feeding issues after a couple 1000 rounds. Polished the tip of the carrier latch (part that holds the shells in the tube) as Brownells recommended and my issue went away. http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/lid=15831/GunTechdetail/Fixing-A-Mossberg-930-Feed-From-The-Tube-Problem If you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself, get a hold of Southern Kentucky Tactical on Facebook. They sell a replacement latch for $45 that has been polished already and will come pre drilled for an over sized magazine release.
  11. If the intent was 30 round mags, it would be easier to just state a magazine capacity limit of 30 rounds. I think that was the intent, but it was poorly worded.
  12. One other thing I will add as to why I am waiting till summer to get training with Shannon. Another issue I am having is that I am out of shape. Not nearly the 220lbs I was when I got out of the Marines. I am starting to work with a personal trainer that is a shooting friend to get back to my fighting weight. Loosing 50 - 60 lbs between now and then would put me in a much better place. Can't afford to do both at the same time right now.
  13. The 6 second mount is very similar to the Carver Customs Hunter mount. It just also has a rail on the bottom so you can add a light
  14. You don't even have to take the slide off to do this with the bore snake either. Just lock the slide back and clean away. I do this in between detailed cleanings.
  15. SJC or Carver Customs will work fine with your barrel and major loads. SJC can be pickier with loads. I use a Carver Comp on mine. He has a 3 port for Minor / Major loads if you want to switch back and forth. And he has a 4 port for Major only. You can email or call him if you have any questions. One of the reasons I went with his stuff on my Open Glock is because he spent the time with me emailing back and forth and even talked to him on the phone a few times while I was figuring everything out. He was very helpful and very patient with me. We talked back and forth, him answering my questions for a few months while I made up my mind. He sells his stuff and he sells SJC stuff as well. http://w.iwebcenters.com/bbenterprise2/ecommerce/comps-barrels-glock-xdm-s-w-m-p/glock/glock-compensators.cfm
  16. I use the Carver Customs mount on my Glock and had Bobby carver put a thumb rest on the side for me. The height of the dot did take some getting used to but it wasn't bad. His mounts don't require permanent mods to your frame like the SJC and Stingray do. But they do limit your holster options some. To keep the ejection issues from popping up (never had a problem), I had Bobby lower my ejection port at the same time he did my speed cuts in the slide.
  17. Thanks for the advice. Open seems like a whole different animal than anything else I've done. I do realize the other shooters weren't so much taking risks, they have around 20 years each in competitive shooting. To me it seemed like risks, things I wasn't fully comfortable with. But I know if I do stay in the comfort zone, I'll never learn. You could see in the videos were we did the same plan, they seemed very natural, and I was conscious of what I was doing to be sure I pushed myself, but remained safe and in control. They were almost on auto pilot, like they knew what to do and just did it. One of the big reasons I am waiting till summer to the get the training is Shannon and my schedules. He has a major match a month at his range for the next 4 months, and my schedule doesn't jive with his until summer. I think what I need to do is start doing some bigger local matches instead of the smaller ones at my local club. There are some amazing shooters at my local club, but not that many really good Open shooters. If I go to some of the larger monthly matches I can squad up with some of the better shooters and pick there brains and pay attention to what they did different. By filming what they did and then myself on the same stages I did see a lot I can improve on. Maybe I should work on those things between now and when I can train with Shannon.
  18. Shooting with some guys today that were better than me (couple of A's and an M), I noticed that my stage breakdown is lacking a bit. I went from shooting Limited for over a year to now shooting Open for the past couple of months. Seems like I am still stuck in Limited mode, and I am playing things to safe and staying in my comfort zone. I took videos of some of the better guys shooting each stage, and had a friend video me. Comparing videos, they were faster on several things. They just shot faster (accurately), faster in and out of positions, more efficient with movement, etc. But I noticed what saved them more time than anything was the way they shot that stages different than I did. They pushed themselves, took harder shots, and took risks. But it paid off for them in the end. Are there any good books or DVD that deal with stage break down? I am gonna be taking a class or 2 this summer with Shannon Smith, but want to learn a few things in the mean time.
  19. Seems to me a lot of people are over thinking this. Don't like Factory? You can still shoot a red dot in 3GN Production. USPSA, IPSC, etc, they all have divisions that have limited capacity. Some of the best shooters in the game are in those divisions. Single Stack, Production, Revolver. They are not newb divisions, they are just divisions. They are also very popular. No one complains about them. If you don't like USPSA Production, then shoot USPSA Limited, or Limited 10, or Open. Same goes here. Don't like 3GN Factory, shoot 3GN Production.
  20. It will be interesting to see if other companies come out with longer magazines now. If not it's gonna give the Unlimted Glock shooters a bit of an advantage with the 33 round mags for them. My CZ 170mm mags take 29 with a thin base pad. I'll probably get another 2-3 rounds into them if I use the CZC large basepad. Of course, the Glock shooters could put a +5 base pad on their mags and get to 36, or use a drum. For 3-gun, I think youve pretty much reached the point of diminishing returns when you hit 30-32. I doubt that removing the limit is going to change anything, it just seemed like a silly historical restriction, so kudos to 3GN for listening I'm sure it won't be long before someone makes a longer basepad for the STI's, CZ's, M&P's, etc.
  21. Yeah, but I don't think 3GN is collecting production metrics from manufacturers to create an approved factory list. I would actually have to say I do not personally know one 3-Gunner who shoots a factory condition rifle, and I know very darn few who even shoot an upper/lower/barrel that shipped together from a manufacturer, either. The factory configuration means no one off firearms. Has to be a commercially available gun. With companies having custom gunsmiths at the factory (Smith & Wesson, etc), what isn't a factory configuration.
  22. It will be interesting to see if other companies come out with longer magazines now. If not it's gonna give the Unlimted Glock shooters a bit of an advantage with the 33 round mags for them.
  23. why would your Hiperfire be illegal? I don't think you are all getting correct information. Was not trying to be a smartass. My question is the 24c is flat with plastic shoe on it. Not factory. My Geiselle looks like a stock AR trigger. I am serious, I like your suggestions for the equipment rules. I have a 6" sight tracker in a 5" edge that I love that I shot limited with all last year. I am not sure it will be legal for Tarheel now. I don't want to drive 11 hours to be bumped to open. I will probably email Mr. Charles a pic before the match to figure it out. The Adams Arms COR rifle which is a factory rifle come standard with the Hiperfire 24C. http://www.adamsarms.net/16-cor-ultra-lite-rifle There are a couple of other rifles that come with it stock now. The way "factory configuration" was explained to me was that it couldn't be some one off specialty rifle. Hell, look at JP rifles and such. You can get damn near any mod you want in factory rifle. If you watch the video posted on pg3, you'll see that the rifle rules really haven't changed, but the capacity limits have. Other than the fact that you can't use mags longer than a certain length, nothing really changed other than the name. (when it comes to the rifle) Now the shotgun capacity has changed. Factory limits your tube to 8 rounds. If it's longer you have to install a plug. Here a repost of the video from pg 3 explaining Factory Div: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SJkxE6C_Eg&sns=fb
  24. Ya, I might have to pic one up
  25. Just an update. Ended up picking up a Midway 56" drag bag that went on sale for Christmas for $60. Will fit with the XRail and have extra room. I think the drag bag is the way to go.
