Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. Hi there, Does anyone have any comments (good or bad, but HONEST) about the Kimber Custom II .45? Thanks!
  2. Well, before I went to the range today, I read these posts about NOT locking the elbows. I tried it, and it feels kind of awkward. Also, even when i DO bend both elbows, my right arm seems straighter than the left, and in order to keep them kind of the having the same amount of bend, I'd point my right elbow out a little more. Looks like a pentagon shape, my chest being the base, biceps to elbow being 2 more sides and elbow to hands being 2 more sides. Is that right? Just feels weird. I shot much closer groups though, but it just felt wrong....
  3. Sounds like ISO is the way to go. Just a minor technical question then...well I think both elbows are supposed to be locked, but where are your elbows actually supposed to be pointing. I'm right handed, so my right elbow seems like it can either point EAST all the way down to SOUTH(i.e., pointing to the ground), likewise my left elbow WEST all the way down to SOUTH. Does it make much difference? I just want to be consistent and start out right. Thanks.
  4. Was wondering people's opinions on which stance is more stable/consistent, Weaver or Isocoles. I'm new to shooting and my natural stance that I felt comfortable with was Weaver, so I've shot about 1100 shots with Weaver stance. Well yesterday I decided to try my whole session with Isocoles. I thought I was shooting more consistently with it, but I'm not sure. I'm going to the range tomorrow again, so I'll try it out again. What are your guys' experiences/advice? Thanks!
  5. Thanks for the comments. Dogma, yep, I'm already doing the dry firing at home, and there is pretty much little or no movement, I even put a cartridge casing on the front sight and squeeze the trigger, the thing hasn't fallen off yet. I have very steady hands to begin with and I've been working out for 12 years, so I have good muscle control too, but for sure I will keep practicing. Unfortunately the range I'm at is an indoor range with a maximum of 50feet (16.67 yards), so I can't go back to 25 yards! Shouldn't I practice from closer and then go farther and farther back? Is that a good method? Ron, Thanks for the encouragment and tips. I guess I'm disappointed becuz I really don't know what the standard is. I'm new to this, I have nothing and no other beginner to measure against, so I have absolutely NO clue as to how I'm doing, whether I'm a slow learner, average, or doing better than average. So when I say I'm disappointed if the group is 4 inches, maybe that's already better than average for a beginner, but I woudln't know, hence my initial post. But your right, gotta set my own goals and improve based on that. Thanks. Wish I had something to measure against on "my level" though besides myself... Flex, Checked out that link, I'll have to try the 3x5 card =) what does "5 shots touching a paster" mean? Sorry for the stupid question...don't know all this shooting lingo yet...
  6. Thanks for the responses. I guess I missed out a lot of details huh? Ok, I guess I'm talking 2 handed, no support, and shooting 5 shots in maybe a minute (which is slow I know), sometimes taking a rest I start to tremble or just get tired because I'm trying to think of all the fundamentals at the same time (brain strain you know. =) I'm just shooting at some paper targets I printed off the internet and pretty much aiming for the same spot every time. I thought I did ok on Sunday, several of my group of shots had 3 or 4 shots that were side by side (i.e., ripping the paper into 1 'bigger' hole, and then one or two shots that was independent of the side by side ones.) I figured I did that a few times on several targets, so I just have to get some consistency down, and make sure I concentrate on all 5 shots, and not lose it after 3 or 4. Not really sure how well I'm doing, I get disappointed when the 2 farthest shots are more 3-4 inches apart, which isn't too often actually, am I expecting too much, or off to a good start? I've shot about 600-700 rounds total since I started...
  7. I was just wondering, what's considered a excellent/good/average/poor group distance for a beginner/rookie at say 7 yards(21feet) and 11 yards (33feet). Also, how many shots are considered standard in a group, I think I read somewhere that i was 5? Is that right?
  8. I'm new to shooting and I've been trying to read a lot, there's so much to know. Anyway, before I go to the range, I try and read some messages/tips and try to apply it when I go. Today before I went, I read this post from an earlier topic on Trigger Control, it was posted by Brian I think... "Try this. Hold your unloaded gun in position, take out the take-up in the trigger, now imagine a spot exactly opposite of where your trigger finger is, on the web of your shooting hand (between the thumb and index finger). Now without thinking about pulling the trigger, just "increase the pressure" between those two points. When you do it "right," it's weird, but cool." Prior to today, my shooting has not been that consistent, my hands have always been very steady, and when I watch the front sight, it doesn't move much when I dry fire. But when I go shooting, the group distance isn't too bad, all the shots will be around the same area, but not too many shots directly side by side. Today, thinking about this post that I read on Trigger Control, I did significantly better, with many shots side by side and the groups much tighter. I was pretty surprised, I sure the heck hope it wasn't just a "lucky day" and that applying this 'technique' in Brian's post is something that I've been missing from my shooting and have now found! Well, I guess I'll find out next week. Thanks for the great post. Hope I can improve next week, or even do as I did today would be cool with me!
  9. Just had a question with regards to MPRO 7 and Breakfree CLP? Which one is better in terms of cleaning a gun? Breakfree CLP seems to do it all, clean, lubricate and protect. I've read a lot of good things about MPRO 7 in terms of cleaning and it sounds great. I talked to a guy at the gunstore on the phone and asked him what the difference is and he said MPRO 7 works great, but it doesn't lubricate, so you have to get a separate lubricant. Then I read internet stuff about MPRO 7 saying that you only need to use that for everything. So what's actually correct? Thanks.
  10. Sorry, got another kind of stupid question. Was wondering if it's ok, to keep bullets in a car or does it get to hot in there and there is a chance the bullet will discharge? Also, is there any 'danger' of a bullet going of if you have it lying around and it falls to a hard floor or if it's in a little container and you shake it or something? I don't think so, but was just wondering...I'm a little ignorant here, so please bear with me....thanks!
  11. Thanks for the replies and clarification. I have actually checked out natchezss and they have some good prices, but after the shipping, it comes out more than if I was to buy from walmart and pay the tax! Anyone have any comments on 9mm 115 gr sellier & bellot? How is that comparable to the Winchester you can get at walmart? Thanks
  12. Kind of a stupid question, but how much cheaper can law enforcement people buy ammo for? My co-worker's husband is training in the academy right now, and he probably can get it cheaper, is that that much cheaper? Or is going to Walmart and buying the Winchester 100 packs ($10.96) pretty much as cheap as you can get from pretty good quality ammo? Anyway, just thought some of you might know. Thanks!
  13. Thanks for everyone's responses, this is real helpful. I've check out the sites you guys listed and have been reading here at work (I know I should be working, but hey, priorities first right? =) I'll have to try out some of the stuff tonight when I go to the range. So many things to remember, had to write some notes down. Had another question, I keep reading, "calling the shots" --what does that mean exactly, sorry for the ignorance. Thanks again for all the help!
  14. Hi, I'm new to handguns and have recently purchased a Sig 239 9mm. I've gone to the range about 4 times now and have shot about 450 rounds. I've had no formal training (except for a basic handgun course on how to properly handle and use a firearm), and have just been reading a lot on the internet about proper grip, stance, breathing, focusing on front sight, etc. In the first range session I shot about 150 rounds and the groups were relatively consitent, but low. I printed that improvement target from sportshooter.com and used that. I believe my head is slanted downward when shooting that's why the shots were low. Should the head be completely straight? It feels like I'm almost looking up. Also, I think my stance is messed up. I feel more comfortable with the Weaver stance, but I'm not sure if my arms are In the proper position etc. From what I know, I should have my right arm straight out and elbow locked, my left arm should be bent at the elbow, but is the elbow supposed to be pointing straight down are like in a "southwest" angle --naturally my elbow points in to the southwest, so to point it straight down requires slight effort from what my arm naturally does. I'm not sure which is the correct position. I went to the range yesterday and was trying the Isocoles stance, it doesn't feel as comfortable. Anyway, all my shots were all over the place yesterday, I was switching between Isocoles and Weaver just to see which would feel better etc. Probably not a good idea to switch back and forth cuz my shots were everywhere no matter which stance I was in. Probably lost concentration. Anyway, any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
