  1. Friday Night Steel over at Fairfield Sportsman Association: https://www.fridaynightsteel.com/ IDPA and 3-gun on Saturdays at BGSL in Wilmore, KY (near Lexington): http://bgslinc.com/calendar/ and I think there are indoor USPSA matches at Hammer Down range in Loveland (maybe only in winter?) https://practiscore.com/clubs/hammer_down_range https://www.hammerdownrange.com/uspsa/
  2. Downside of a shortened rebound spring is a choppy trigger pull in my experience. Get the lightened spring of the proper length for superior results.
  3. I value the ability to shoot with or without moonclips, so the 627 is the logical choice for me. For 99% of my live fire practice, I don't bother mooning/demooning. I don't know if this would work very well with a 929. I have a 4" 627, and the sight radius is fully adequate for accurate shooting. I find it a very handy and maneuverable size. Of course, you possibly have recoil reduction, and potential for a lighter load making PF with a longer, heavier barrel.
  4. Having the right gear is critical. Footwear is serious business when running on wet grass with a loaded gun. Ironically salomons are not good on wet grass. very true, discovered how slippery the Salomons were training in the back yard tonight, going from box to box. However, perhaps a non-issue, as I don't recall the last bay I shot in that was not gravel at a match.
  5. I think our vision is like a movie camera...it can shoot 1 frame/sec (blinking), 10 frames/second, or 100 frames/sec, or maybe even 1,000 frames/sec. Figure out how to tune up the frame rate and you'll do very well.
  6. I'm very satisfied with the Bayou Bullet 160 grain loading in .38 Short Colt brass They are a round nose with NO cannelure, and I roll crimp, (pretty heavily) but accuracy is still very good, lack of canelure does not seem to be an issue. The RN are good for fast reloads, and they run very clean.
  7. Good time was had shooting with Squad 2. Good to see the young fellow from Iowa on our squad, Craig, tearing it up with the wheelgun, he was probably 1/2 the age of anyone else on the squad. And I won the 9mm XD-M in the random drawing, that's a first!
  8. will "equipment checks" have to be expanded in their scope to go beyond just pistols and magazines?
  9. I'd also recommend the Model 15, with 4" barrel, for the advantage of adjustable/replaceable rear sight. M-15 may also have a pinned front sight, in which case replacing with a FO front would be pretty easy. I also know there is an abundance of OEM and aftermarket parts available for the Model 15, not to mention competition holsters...not so sure about the Speed Six. Speed Six kind of looks like a sweet carry gun, would it qualify for BUG-R with a 3" barrel?
  10. in Manhattan for three days...can anyone recommend any local ranges (indoor or outdoor) where I could get some handgun practice in? Thanks, John
  11. I'm in for the Saturday match...what have I gotten myself into, LOL! Saw something about the possibility of camping on site...how feasible is this, and who should I talk to about this beforehand? Thanks, John MacLean
  12. Welcome, I live in Northern Kentucky and shoot USPSA, IDPA, and the occasional 3-gun and outlaw steel match. Mostly shoot revolver in USPSA and IDPA. Lots of good matches within easy driving distance in this area, between Fairfield Sportsman's Association (Friday Night Steel), MRPC (USPSA, steel), BGSL in Lexington (IDPA, USPSA, 3-gun), and Silver Creek in Sellersburg, IN. I'll probably run into you somewhere.
  13. I love crepes...I love really thin pancakes I got mauled by a cougar...
  14. 3.1 grains Bullseye with 160g Bayou RN @1.17" OAL works well for me, makes minor PF from 4" 627
  15. I use the red one (.45ACP), works perfectly.
  16. I'm very happy with this load out of my S&W 5946 (3rd gen) with stock barrel: Bayou 147 @ 1.13 OAL 3.4g titegroup seems very accurate and consistent 933 FPS, Standard deviation 10, Extreme Spread 29 with a 6 shot sample size
  17. I made a bunch of these up with 0.080 kydex and tek-loc belt attachments, they allow pretty fast reloads on the M-1. Easy to grab, also pretty secure.
  18. Interesting and good to know. I checked my M65, and it is 2.94" from the face of the cylinder to the end of the barrel.
  19. Interesting. I suppose over the course of a typical match, where you're shooting more than reloading, and have breaks between stages, the stress from hitting the mag release is a non-issue. I guess "everything in moderation" is a good maxim RE: practicing reloading. Thanks
  20. Anybody have an idea what aspect of dry fire actually is the culprit in causing injury? I know that I can dryfire like mad with my double action revolvers, and I've had no issues. The last two months, I've applied myself to learning how to shoot semi-autos, and have been doing *LOTS* of "Draw - Shoot 2 - Reload" AKA "4 Aces" practice, and my elbow is getting tender. I *suspect * it is the multiple reps hitting the mag release on my S&W 5946 with my dominant hand thumb. Seems hitting the mag release on a semi-auto with your strong hand thumb requires applying force at an awkward angle, unlike hitting the cylinder latch on a revolver...where you just push forward.
  21. The important thing is, you want a 3" barrel for the full length ejector rod. You get consistent ejection of the long 38 Special brass that way. 3" Model 66's are very rare, and command a price premium. Same with Model 19's. You see more in the 2-1/2" barrel length. 3" Model 65's and Model 10's are pretty easy to find, in comparison, but have fixed sights (not a big problem IMHO). So I think if you must have adjustable sights, you'd be better off looking for a 3" Model 686. I don't own any L-frames, so I can't compare a 686 directly from competition experience to a K-frame, but I find nothing lacking in K-frames, for IDPA competition use.
  22. does this s Does this still work? Seems broke when I tried it today. till work? seems not to any more
  23. I favor Bayou Bullets 160g work well in 38 Short Colt as well as 38 Special cases.
  24. Not too worried about powder since I scored 8# of Bullseye over the summer. Even before then I had quite a bit of "plan B" powders assembled, enough to get through the 2015 shooting season.
