  1. IDPA match tomorrow! Should be a fun and relaxing time at the local club. I have to make it to the range more often! I have been dry firing, but haven't live fire practiced in quite a while. It seems as though my only live firing sessions are when I shoot matches right now. Now I just have to find the time.
  2. Results are in! I placed 11th. If I wouldn't have thrown the 2 mikes/2 no shoots, I would have placed much higher. Scores aside, that had to have been the most fun I've ever had at an USPSA match. The stage with 32 steels was worth the entry fee. Dan Burwell, (distinguished master [iDPA]), runs the matches up there, and it is always enlightening watching him shoot and seeing how he approaches each stage. I am going to concentrate on calling my shots more accurately next match, so I don't end up with mike's and no shoots.
  3. Great stages at today's match! Shot a 7 stage USPSA match in Hollidaysburg today, and forgot the head cam! i threw 2 no shoots and 2 mikes, which I'm not happy about, (I think that I may have gotten ahead of myself just a bit in attempt to speed up my transitions). Still felt OK about my performance and can't wait to see the results!
  4. Play a show with the band tonight, then off to a USPSA match tomorrow morning! Looking forward to some running and gunning. I have been practicing dry-reloads the last few evenings...hopefully I will notice an improvement.
  5. OUCH! What a day. Had a rough day at work, and let things get to me during the match, (didn't flip that switch, DNH ). Totally lost my stage plan and round count on two fairly simple stages. We were allowed to shoot each stage twice for a total of 4 rounds, and I did a little better on my second attempt both times. I actually completely forgot a target on my first run. Ended up placing 8th overall. I would like to make excuses, but I know that it was my doing. MAJOR LACK OF CONCENTRATION! I'll make sure to eat my apples and turn off the work switch next match.
  6. ...I learned more about myself and the way I approach shooting more than anything else....I was so "in my head", that when I was actually shooting the stage... my thoughts were hindering my ability to shoot smoothly and follow through. After that run, I moved on, relaxed, ....I didn't think about how poorly I the last stage...or how fast the other shooters seemed. I actually didn't think about much of anything. ...preformed much better than the first stage after that shift in consciousness. I also seemed to enjoy myself more when I let my mind rest....I am having fun trying to figure it out. I believe that I will begin to discover more about myself as I allow it. I am super stoked that I finally picked up Brian's book, as it has already helped me to open up my mind to a different way of thinking about shooting. I also realized how limitless our ability to learn and improve can be. The road to better shooting has never seemed as long and daunting as it has the past couple days, and at the same time, I have never been as excited about the process. I certainly observed a few technical/mechanical/physical errors yesterday, which I believe I can improve on...but self observation and just the way I observe things took the cake this time. BTW: Scores were posted from yesterdays match. I ended up 1st place ESP MM, and 5th place overall! I also has the 2nd lowest number of downs! Unfortunately, I hit 3 non-threats and had 1 procedural. Pleasantly surprised with the results though! WOW! It looks like you're learning some advanced stuff! You might need to re-posted this thread in the Zen forum... Getting paid to think for a living and then being able to turn that off while blasting some targets is a great source of pleasure for me. Brian's book is a great guide. It's given my brain permission to allow things to happen when shooting. CONGRATULATIONS! I bet we'll get a comment from Brian on this thread... DNH Thanks! I may post that little ramble in the Zen forum.
  7. Lookin' good. You look to be twice as good as I am, and I am twice your age. Keep shooting and posting!
  8. Honestly, I think I learned more about myself and the way I approach shooting more than anything else. The first stage that day was my worst. I was running through a million things in my head, and was over analytical before, during, and after the run. I was so "in my head", that when I was actually shooting the stage, my actions were mirroring my thoughts, and my thoughts were hindering my ability to shoot smoothly and follow through. After that run, I moved on, relaxed, planned out how I would execute the next stage, and just shot the damn thing. I didn't think about how poorly I the last stage, how I needed to make up time on the current stage, or how fast the other shooters seemed. I actually didn't think about much of anything. I ended up shooting first place overall on that stage with zero downs, and received a few compliments. I didn't shoot quite as well for the remaining stages, but still preformed much better than the first stage after that shift in consciousness. I also seemed to enjoy myself more when I let my mind rest. I am not a very intellectual person, and it is hard for me to put into words exactly what that mental shift entailed, but I am having fun trying to figure it out. I believe that I will begin to discover more about myself as I allow it. I am super stoked that I finally picked up Brian's book, as it has already helped me to open up my mind to a different way of thinking about shooting. 9. What a day! Drove out to shoot an IDPA match at Pitcairn-Monroeville Sportsmen's Club, which turned out to be awesome! A lot of firsts for me today: shot from a vehicle, shot from prone, shot a zero down stage, and shot 3 hostages. My performance had its ups and downs, however, I think I learned more today than ever before. I'm looking forward to checking out the scores when they are posted. Only recorded a few of the stages, (couldn't remember to turn the darn camera on), but I suppose it's better than no footage.
  10. Correction on the classifier: 121.28 lol Just recieved BE's book!
  11. My Comp-Tac pro competition kit for IDPA arrived in the mail today! I had the pleasure of breaking in the new gear at a local match tonight. They ran an IDPA classifier practice, and I shot a bit better than the real classifier I shot a couple weeks ago. Ended up with 121.67 (ESP SS), which was about 17 seconds faster than the last classifier I shot. Didn't bring my head cam, so no analysis this time. It seems as though I just can't shoot accurately when I am running the classifier, but at normal matches, I am much more accurate (even though I am shooting faster) Maybe I am trying too hard...
  12. It doesn't feel like I'm lowering my gun, but rather pulling it in. As you stated, the camera angle does make it seem as though I'm lowering my gun quite a bit. I should probably set the camera to the side of me next time, so I can see what exactly is happening during reloads. Thanks for the input! To answer your question regarding the camera, I use a Contour Roam mounted to my hearing protection.
  13. Thanks, DNH! Did you notice any specific issues I should be working on from the video?
  14. Had a blast shooting an IDPA match Saturday. Felt as though my performance slowly declined throughout the match, however, the results were surprisingly good for me: 1st place ESP SS and 8th overall! For some reason I was listed as shooting ESP SS, when in reality, I am an ESP MM. Anyone have any ideas as to why this would happen? Here is a link to the scores: SCORES 3/6 stages:
  15. Thanks for the advice, folks! I am currently shooting at least one local match per week, and am thankful for that opportunity. Now I just have to relax and have fun!
  16. Where are the results listed? My friend shot this and I was curious to check out the results.
  17. Hello folks! I recently registered to shoot my first two sanctioned IDPA tournaments, (Lewistown Patriot Match and the 2012 Pennsylvania State IDPA Match), and was wondering how you folks prepared for such matches. I bought a 5.11 tactical vest and am ordering a comp-tac belt/holster/mag pouch tonight. I will be shooting ESP marksman with my Springfield XD(m) 5.25" if that matters. Any tips regarding practice/preparation up until the match dates? Are there specific drills you cover beforehand? Any tips regarding actually shooting in a larger tournament? Sorry for the "noob" questions, but alas, I am a "noob" Time to get all Rocky Balboa, and start punching raw meat.
  18. WOW! Just found out the match director forgot to list my stage 3 procedural, meaning I am actually classified....MARKSMAN At least they are taking the time to fix the mistake. Guess I'll have to try harder next time!
  19. Shot a local match last night. Seemed as though there were no improvements or breakthroughs this week. Placed 1st in my division and 7th overall. Also excited about the 5.11 vest I should be getting in the mail this week! Hoping it will work well for IDPA, as I registered for my first two sanctioned IDPA tournaments recently. Here is a run from yesterdays match
  20. Just picked up a shield in 9mm yesterday! Cleaned and put a measly 50 rounds of American Eagle 124gr through it shortly after purchase. Seems to be a great little shooter. Can't wait to break it in a bit more tomorrow. Shot an OK group from about 15 yards. Yanked a couple shots.
  21. Just browsed through a good chunk of your videos, impressive and inspiring! Gave me a little spark to start practicing more often. Look forward to seeing more.
  22. Shot a local USPSA match yesterday and felt a bit better about my performance. Placed 1st in my division, and 5th overall. Only recorded 1 (2 string) stage. Still had a bit of trouble keeping the gun up, specifically during reloads, which seems to be a new issue that reared its ugly head. Here is the video if anyone would like to tear it apart. Obviously, I had a wee bit of trouble with the texas star.
  23. My left thumb is tight to the gun, although contact area is minimal. I feel "normal" when gripping a 1911/cz/sig with right hand thumb resting on the saftey, (in which case my left thumb extends further and makes more contact. I cannot rest my thumb on the slide release on my competition gun (springfield xdm) and end up tucking everything between that and the trigger guard. Maybe I should develop a new technique? Reloads had seemed to be a strong point up until this match. I was typically dropping the gun slightly and maintaining a visual of my next target. I always rotate the gun a good bit and then push out instead of up for the most part. It almost seems as though I am regressing! I absolutely LOVE all the advice I've been getting, I just jot down suggestions pointers in a journal and take that to the range for practice. Mag changes will be a point to reestablish. Thought provoking point on crowding barricades and being ready to shoot. Now that you mention it, I don't think I am ready to shoot when coming around barricades. I seem to "creep" around the corner, and the sights seem to rise up diagonally left or right to target, then I'm ready. This doesn't seem to be an issue for me when shooting USPSA. I suppose I am afraid of receiving a procedural for cover...so much that I slow down around corners and allow my sights to "creep" to the target. I suppose I could back up a bit and shuffle/lean while slicing the pie...and I can acquire position while maintaining sight picture. (GOING TO HAVE TO PRACTICE!) In regards to lack of urgency, (which there certainly is a lack of), once again, I believe I am subconsciously slowing down to avoid penalties. I think it probably has a lot to do with the mental disconnection I was feeling that day as well. Helps to hear it from someone else, and makes me want to really work on speeding up movements/transitions. I am ordering the BE's book this week, and will be studying my rear off. Do you remember calling any shots? I do! There was a fine line there though. Despite all the mistakes I made that day, and my "out of focus" mindset, I can at least say that I was safe, fairly accurate, and had a great time with great people!
  24. Thanks for the advice DNH! I definitely had an issue keeping the gun up that day. Didn't even notice the late support hand until you had pointed it out! TIME FOR PRACTICE! The props there were neat. First time I had been to that club, and plan on returning. Thanks again for the pointers!
