  1. I'm getting back into the game after a few years off and am in the process of setting up my Glock G45 for ESP division in IDPA.  Any recommendations as to which magwells will (when installed) allow my pistol to fit in the box?

    Thanks!

  2. I'm a B class shooter, but a master critquer. Here you go...

Move when the timer goes off. You can draw, and load as your moving to the 1st shooting position.

Avoid sticking your gun through ports, if at all possible; it takes that much more time to bring the gun back out of the port.

When doing your walk through before shooting a stage, plan your reloads, and get them done as soon as possible. Targets should never be waiting on you while you’re standing still in front of them.

Stop the spraying and praying, especially on swingers. Pick a spot in the A zone and shoot it twice, no matter how long it takes.

Most of us can't get away with dancing around on one foot while shooting. Get a more stable shooting stance, if at all possible, but a stance that allows you to quickly move out of the shooting position.

Try to squad with Dan Burwell; I’m sure you can learn a lot from him.

    Good Luck, and Happy Shooting!

    Thanks for the pointers!

Looked like you had fun. What bullet & powder are you using? Lots of smoke.

I was using straight lead 135gr bullets with VV N320 powder.

  3. Why ugh? It looked like a lot of fun!

I had a moment in this weekend's match of my own that I had to transition on the move with a mag change from strong hand to weak hand only. In that very moment I yelled to myself, "You dufus, you forgot to practice this!" I guess it worked out, but don't you hate those moments?

I think you did fine and your speed looked good!

It was definitely a lot of fun! I was just bummed I made so many mistakes. I've been shooting too much IDPA lately and kept unintentionally running the pistol dry, even though it wasn't part of my stage plan. Hopefully someone can pick out some other issues for me to work on.

  4. Was the CZ a new purchase? If so, do you plan on switching over from the glock? I've been thinking of switching to a CZ platform to mix things up a bit. Enjoying the range diary and looking forward to more posts btw.

  5. The candle light stage was crazy! I lucked out with 0 down on the first stage, but ended up dropping 6 points on the second. Definitely the most nerve racking stages for me. What division/class did you shoot in?

I shot in SSR/Master. Reloading a revolver in the dark is fun :)

I couldn't see either sight on that stage. All I could see my hands and the back of the gun, so I just pointed and shot. On the last set I tried to stay away from the NT and shot a pair of 3's. I should of just went for the head.

Yikes! I couldn't imagine shooting that stage with a revolver! Would've been a good stage to have night sights on huh? Not that you could see the targets anyways.

  6. I shot that match as well. The candlelight stages were interesting to say the least! I did fairly well except I completely dinked stage 10. I was so impressed with myself that I got the mover that I forgot about the last target behind the barrels. By the time I realized and shot I added at least a dozen seconds to my time. Ah well.

As a side note, if one gets a match bump, how do you get your card signed? The match is spread over two days and it's possible you could be long gone before the results are posted.

I guess you could mail it to the MD in that situation. I just noticed they updated my classification on the IDPA site, which is awesome considering I didn't get my card signed....despite being there for awards.

  7. Make sure you get your card signed!

Will IDPA still update my classification when they send the scores to HQ? I noticed they listed the match win on the members area of the IDPA site, but haven't updated my classification yet.

That was a fun match, how did you like the candel light stage? I got a FTN on that stage, luckly everyone else im my divison had trouble in there too.

  8. First, you need to use the same visual patience for every single shot. You notice that you start shooting a few pieces of steel down then it all goes to shit about the 3 - 4 shot in. That is because you stop aiming hard for each shot. The first three or four pieces of steel go down one for one and you start thinking "This is easy, I don't even have to aim" and then the wheels fall off the wagon after that. Don't worry, that is a common issue many shooters face. Its hard to me mentally and visually patient for multiple shots that are about the same level of difficulty.

The second issue is that you are transitioning between targets with your arms, not your knees. When you transition between targets using your arms it changes the grip pressure on the gun and your recoil management ability. Essentially the further you point away from your natural point of aim the worse your grip and recoil management gets. Stop transitioning with your arms and START transitioning with your knees.

Thanks for the help! When I transition with my knees, are you suggesting I move my feet move as well, or stay planted? I never even thought about that point and am excited to work on that issue the next match like this. I think it is easier for me to aim with my body/knees and acquire a proper point of aim on large stages with movement, ports, etc. I (obviously) have trouble with that when I am in a shooting box with targets more centered in front of me.

Thanks again for the help! I will be working on visual patience the next few weeks.

  9. I didn't know what section to post this topic in, so I stuck it in IDPA since this is refering to an IDPA sanctioned match this weekend. I will be competing this Sunday, and from the looks of it, the Friday and Saturday shooters will be shooting in the sun...the Sunday shooters will be soaked. I have yet to shoot a match in this type of weather, and I am looking for advice from forum members on how to handle the situation. I would certainly switch to Saturday if I could, but this is not an option. Anyone here have any experience shooting a major match in the rain?

    Thanks!
