Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. I second that! Any lip on a mag other than SS for. 22 Cal is complete garbage. Constant ftf with my 10/22 until I learned my lesson and started going with SS, then magically all my problems went away.
  2. Thanks to everyone for the insight.
  3. My original thought was Geissele SG3 for 3 gun, then I saw the Timney for a little less. Part of the reason I asked was that I had a suspicion that I would wish I paid the extra $70 on the SG3.
  4. I had a feeling this may have been a former discussion. Thanks.
  5. Does anyone have an opinion on, or experience with, Timney triggers for AR's?
  6. Thanks, yes that was a big help. Adjustable gas block makes perfect sense to me now, taking into consideration the components being used, and of course bullet weight. I guess in my mind, it sounds like tweaking a gas block is much like tweaking the air/fuel ratio on a combustion engine. Dial down to the bare minimum required, and then slightly increase to find the reliable sweet spot. After your explanation of SS barrels, it sounds as though the extra cash is well worth it. I see LWS has them with the 1:8 twist @ 18" for right around the $300 dollar mark. That's reasonable considering my original plan was to pay $250 for the Criterion.
  7. Great thread and very helpful! I've been wondering the real meaning of what "calling the shots" is, and this has been the most informative I've read. Thanks again!
  8. Thanks! I checked out Syrac and will keep that in mind. I have zero knowledge of types of gas blocks, and their adjustments. I only know the purpose of them, as far as when and why you adjust them is beyond me. Is it usually a set it and forget it type of situation? Or do you adjust the gas block with some frequency? I've heard recently that SS barrels, once they heat up, tend to lose accuracy and "drift" was the term used. Is there any truth to this, or is it a myth? As far as durability my understanding has been the same as yours.
  9. Fortunately I have time on my side. This summer I'm going to run my Bushmaster at the shoots, and slowly build this one up as the budget allows. I'm not past spending the extra money on a particular component if it really makes the difference. I'm not looking to break the bank either. Based on some of the threads I've read on here, I will probably be changing up certain aspects of my build once I start shooting. I googled ambi charging handles and came up with Badger Ordnance and Brownells. Thanks, that does look like a better option for me. I have some, but not all the tools I need, DPMS has been the route I've been going for tools. As far as the mechanical aspect, I'm comfortable building one. The technical aspect is what I'm weak on, and trying to learn. Barrel twist vs. bullet weight, gas blocks (and adjustments), various triggers and how all this affects performance. Lets face it, up until now I only shoot and clean it, with little adjustment or consideration beyond the sights. This site so far has been a good resource for those things, so I'll just keep reading about them.
  10. My first post and my first AR build with the intention of using it for 3Gun shooting. I'm right handed, yet shoot long gun as a lefty due to poor vision in the right eye. Sometime ago I had my first taste of 3Gun style of shooting in a class, and using my right handed AR exposed alot of weaknesses I never experienced firing from a bench, mainly my cumbersome manipulation of the lower controls of the rifle. Regardless, I was immediately hooked on that style of shooting. That being said, I already know certain features that I want in this build. I've already purchased a billet ambi-lower from Mega Machine with the intentions of ordering an ambidextrous safety and mag release from Knights Armament. My thoughts for the rest of the key components (and I'm sure that I've missed some things) are as follows, and would greatly appreciate input: 18" Criterion barrel chrome-lined 1:9 twist Fail Zero complete bolt carrier group (worth the money?) Geissele SD-3G Trigger BCM Gunfighter charging handle Troy VTAC Alpha Rail PWS FSC556 flash hider/compensator Spike's ST-T1 buffer Have no idea: Gas block and tube? Stripped upper? Sights? Lower parts kits? Other parts or components? I have considered getting a complete left handed upper from Stag or Rock River. Honestly the ejection being on the right side hasn't really caused me any grief on any rifle. My fear of purchasing a lefty upper is having limited options in the future as far as bolt carriers go. As far as stocks and mags, I'm happy with Magpul. Optics is another discussion I'm sure. Any input is greatly appreciated.
  11. I've just started a build on an AR, an have been looking at quite a few companies just as you have. I'm in a different situation than you, in that I have one AR already, and this will be a slow build as budget allows for me. For the stripped lower you may want to consider Spike's Tactical, the prices are reasonable, and I have never heard any complaints about quality.
  12. Thanks, I'm in the Downriver area south of Detroit.
  13. Joined the forum to get opinions and info on 3 gun competitive shooting. Looks like a no BS crowd on here with good advice, and solid experience. Was introduced to 3 gun shooting a year ago when taking a tactical carbine class. Now looking to go deeper into getting started.
