I find it a little wierd the 40 sw 180 grain factory load according to wikipedia is 1050 fps which is well over the 916 needed for Major PF and well beyond what is needed for 125k minor. So why would people have such a hard time making major with 40 sw when its a natural? Or is that just because of the clays powder, and there is a better powder out there for this?
-
ok then what powder would be better i have a few LBS of wst that i was gonna use for my 9MM loads. i can keep my clays for my 45.
-
scored 16 LBS of clays for use in my 45 bear creek 230's but was looking for a load for my 40 and bear creek 180's major and minor Or just a high low range if you have it. i can do my ladder from there ..

you want plated, Jacketed , moly or lead all is a factor. moly bear creek usually ships in a day or two. everyone else im not sure bear creek is all i use. Mostly because even in these bad times i order on monday they ship on wednesday..

I would find your load min and max and load 10 rounds at every.2 say from 3.6-4.2 load 10 @ 3.6 @ 3.8 @4.0 @ 4.2 ( be OCD on the highest value , weigh every load at this level) bring them to the range and see what works best for your pistol as far as groups and power factor. if it groups best at 3.6 and 3.8 i would do it again with 10 @ 3.6 10@ 3.7 and 10 @ 3.8 and see which is best for accuracy and make sure it will also PF for what you want to do .
Just my 2C its what i do for all my guns some say im crazy..

ok here are a few that made me laugh
1. " Keep your booger hook off the bang button."
2. "Man people here cant shoot, Look at all these worm burners." - Speaking of the streaking in the ground from low shots..
-
WOW took it out did a load ladder and ended up doign 5 shots at 50 feet in under .63 outside of hole to outside of hole at the widest that pits it at about .18 CTC amazing

STI make a far better pistol IMO and its in your price range.

Its been great SOOOO MUCH to learn such a vast wealth of knowledge here its amazing

Man i think im losing my mind this book thing is driving me nuts .. but the search goes on

Still rockin this out using Seeklanders book and trying to get a better grip and more speed on my draw. Had a BLAH night at the range tonight just not feeling it ya know. only did 150 rounds before i left didn't want to waste to much ammo when i wasn't really into it. Still gotta find time to dryfire practice.

Thank you for the information ill go looking for your other posts on figuring over all length. i didn't know you could go below the booked data. when i learned to reload my dad always just said this is the book use their bullets and there loads to be safest. Sooooo much to learn..

With the short chamber on the Storm Lake 9 mm conversion barrel in my M&P 40 Pro the Bear Creek Moly 125 gr RN (wt. 128 gr.) have to be loaded at 1.090" to keep them off the rifling.
At 20 yards, shooting off hand through a chrono everything grouped well in the -0 zone of an IDPA target with very little smoke
3.5 gr WST, 1.090 COL
1048-
1076+
1063 * average 136 PF
27.89 c
10.19
Thanks "fltbed".
Steve
I've heard of people using WST with 9 mm and moly but Hodgdon doesn't list it on their website.
http://data.hodgdon.com/main_menu.asp
What were you using w/ 125 and 130?
Thanks,Steve
Years ago, Hornady published 9mm data for WST with their 115 and 124 gr. bullets. I used that to extrapolate a start load for the BC 125 & 130’s. The 147 gr. data I got from doing a search on here.
BC 125 gr. TC
4.8 gr. WST (most accurate) Start: 4.2 Max: 5.0
OAL 1.145
Vel. 1080f.p.s.
BC 130 gr. RN
4.2 gr. WST (most accurate) Start: 3.8 Max: 4.7
OAL 1.145
Vel. 1025 f.p.s.
BC 147 gr. TC
3.6 gr. WST (most accurate) Start: 3.4 Max: 3.9
OAL 1.145
Vel. 910 f.p.s.
Their’s not a lot of velocity variations between start loads and max. with the 125’s & 130’s it was less than 100 f.p.s. and with the 147’s it was less than 50 f.p.s. What I found, was when you find that middle ground sweet spot, the velocities get very consistent and consequently, accuracy improves.
Hope this helps.
Jeff
Thank you,
Steve
ok one says 3.5 grain the other says lowest load is 4.2 ??

Ya but second target best represented the group difference, that target was from the 3.8 grain with bc bullet but the shot groups represented about the variance i was getting ..

Ok i loaded my star line brass with Federal match large pistol primers, 3.6 of clays ( laddered 3.6, 3,7, 3.8, 3.9, ) and Bear creek moly 230 grain( 235 or so ) went to the range to accuracy test my STI USPSA single stack 1911. Just so see what load it liked the most with tightest group.
Is what i got 5 shot group off rest at 50 feet.. Nice group
So today i used my bunch of reg range brass ( Mixed brass federal . winchester, remington etc)
and today i went back to range to confirm my load all single handedly loaded to a strict 3.6 grains with the same federal match large pistol primers and bear creek bullets. Only to see my groups go from above to spiratic all about an inch to inch and a half , some holes touching others two bullets almost same hole third out in left field a inch or so away. does brass really change pressures that much? I mean for idpa its a great group but for the small club bulls eye match here i wanna be able to rock it out. Im convinced to just load all brand new starline for the match but just wanted opinions. so i dont get this

Is there a reloading book that covers lead moly and a large variant of powders? Or where do most get the info on the loads they use Min load max load ?
-
Haven't you seen DOOMSDAY preppers you gotta get 25 years worth of ammo and food together or your gonna die...
-
BC bullet and 3.6 of clays and i got this 5 shot group at 50 feet but should be good ..
-
ok the hodgdon site says max is 4.0 of clays on a LRN can you safely go over their supposed max. i cant find any info on clays and Bear creek bullets ( lead round nose ) in my sierra , hornady , lyman or the berger reloading book.
Do you work over the max slowly looking for pressure marks?
-
Remember also dillon has a lifetime warranty on the loader so if you suspect it send it to them . I had a mishap where i thought i didnt powder a round and cap a bullet on it. the next day i went back thru all 100 rounds pulling then and resetting the charge in them one at a time. I admit i get a little ocd when reloading. I pull every 5th round sometimes when im working a ladder for new powder and bullet combo i will do each round individually. when ever you return to the reloader make sure you know what powder was in it. Did anyone make any changes. if i leave my reloader set up with powder in it i place a sticky not on the powder holder with what grain its throwing and what powder is in it. i also leave the powder container right next to the press. If i am switching heads i empty all powder from the unit. so they dont get mixed up .. Glad to hear no one was hurt its a scary thing...
-
i just got mine also so i will be following this thread to see what people say ..

with this one i would suggest if you do the apex i would do all the apex. like the RAM, trigger competition only ( its light and amazing tho i did keep the regular trigger) and all upgradable parts. My last practice session i got a few draw times on target ( +1 ) but under 1 sec registering a .94 and a .99. so practice makes perfect. I was sierra jacketed bullets with TG but have since switched to bear creek bullets so i am still working on getting the powder adn load ready but will post when i have it. But i did open a facebook page called Jeffstroudshootist if anyone wants to hook up on facebook and talk or share match data places and events...

Would like to try to use one powder and a guy told me clays but everyone says clays wont work for 9mm. so my question is what powder do you use with moly bullets and 9mm minor 125 147 grain 40 180 major and 45 230 major ... Not trying to start war of the worlds just trying to fig this out. tho i will be using clays for a while for 45 since i have 8 lbs left..
So powder choices are
vv320 good but i can buy 4lbs of wst for 1 lb of this around here..
231
WST
Solo 1000
clays seeing if your paying attention
???
Ok better powder for 40 minor and major with 180 Bear creek
in 10mm/40 Caliber

I have a few LBS (4) of WST and a TON ( 16 LBS) of clays
But if wst is safer to meet Minor and major ill use that just wondering.
