  1. I just received a Faxon barrel and it seems the chamber is too tight for my reloads. I cannot get 124gr JHP from both MG and PD to chamber at 1.125" OAL. But Winchester white box 115 and Federal 124 factory loads will plunk perfectly. My reloads will plunk in my 9mm 1911 barrel perfectly. Other than reaming the barrel are there any other options? I've already tried going to the book minimum of 1.090 but it's still a tight fit. Can I safely go shorter than that? If I do go shorter is there any risk of feeding issues? I am open to trying a different bullet profile, I'm just not sure what will work. Thanks for any help.
  2. It seems Smalley is no longer offering free samples. They offered to sell me one for $37.22. If anyone received more than one sample that would be willing to give up an extra, I will gladly pay for shipping.
  3. All shooters are up now. https://practiscore.com/results/470eacf9-adb9-474c-8687-f8703c5f3927/index
  4. Match sells out in two minutes. Match going to hell. Hopefully next year far fewer out of state shooters will attempt to register and more local shooters will be able to actually shoot a major match at our home range. This might help with the admin issues too. Feel free to drop out if you don't like how it's being run.
  5. Even though this article says the Aftec extractors are already beveled I noticed the brass seemed to get hung up a little on the bottom edge. I went ahead and added a little more bevel and polished that edge, I'm going to try running the Aftec with one spring rather than two as well. I also polished the breech face and feed ramp. Rocky Mountain bullets should be here tomorrow. I won't get a chance to test fire it until late next week (Disneyland trip!) but I'll report back once I make it out.
  6. Factory loads make it worse.
  7. Probably about 2k rounds through it.
  8. Well I thought the new mag catch had solved my problem. First stage of tonight's match I had two nose dives. Second stage none. Third stage it happened once. Fourth and final stage it locked my gun up so bad I couldn't even get the mag out. Took a few minutes to clear. Ended up with a DNF. Back to the drawing board. I ordered 1000 Rocky Mountain Reloading 180gr RN. Really hope that does it. Also going to try running some rounds loaded to 1.180 instead of 1.200 to see if that changes anything.
  9. Not that I noticed. It actually feels more solid when the mag seats.
  10. Just had my first DQ the other night. Reloading on the move and somehow managed to touch the trigger. I have a 2lb trigger too, been shooting with it for several months and haven't had an issue. Weird thing is the oversize button on my mag catch was gone when I went to unload and show clear. I'm thinking that might have changed the geometry of the gun in my hand when I was doing my reload. Not sure but definitely learned a lesson on trigger finger placement.
  11. The EGW mag catch seems to have fixed the problem. My gun will now chamber a round with 10 loaded in a magazine from both slide lock and racking the slide. I just wish the mag catch was threaded for a button.
  12. Thanks for the recent replies. The problem is worse with factory ammo. I have the EGW higher mag catch delivering tomorrow. I'm really hoping that fixes it. I put a Dawson mag catch in it today and it helped with loading 9 in a mag but it still does it with 10. So I'm covered when shooting major at least. I'll post back tomorrow after I put the new mag catch in.
  13. You're running a 10lb recoil spring in a 40? I have some 45 mags so I'll give those a try and see how it goes.
  14. Let's see if I can answer some of these questions. I appreciate all the advice so far guys! I'm currently running a 14lb recoil spring. I'll try a 15 and see if that helps. Does the mag release that Dawson sells raise the mags? I couldn't tell by the description. The feed ramp hangs over a tiny bit, about the width of a fingernail. I'm not running a shock buff. I am running an Aftec extractor. Don't remember if it has both springs in or not. I'll check that to see if I can remove one if I am. For you guys that are using 200gr RN, can you tell me the difference in recoil vs a 180gr? Care to share your load data? I really would like to get the gun to function with 10 rounds in case I ever want to shoot minor with it. I do have a 9mm slide for it which functions perfectly but 40 minor would be cool too! Thanks again for the help!
  15. The problem absolutely gets better with fewer rounds in the mag. If I load 10 it happens every time (which I never do), loading 9 in happens about 80% of the time, loading 8 it's only about 5% of the time, and it never happens with fewer than 8 in the mag. The frame is a Kimber 9mm, the barrel is a Nowlin in a Caspian slide.
  16. 1911 in 40 S&W. Not all the time, but enough to drive me to change something, I get nose dives. It's almost always the first round in a magazine and on a slide lock reload. It does occasionally happen on the first round after a normal reload. Some days it doesn't happen at all, and when it does happen it's usually only once during a 4-stage match. But that one time costs me valuable seconds. I'm shooting the Western States Single Stack Classic next month and don't want it to happen at all. Using Tripp 10mm 10-round magazines. It happens with factory ammo and my reloads at 1.180 and 1.200 using both Precision Delta RNFP and Bayou Bullets TCG, 180gr. I'm thinking of trying out the Berry's 180gr RN bullets hoping that not having the flat point will help get it up the feed ramp but am open to more suggestions if they're out there. Here's a pic, this is a Bayou Bullet 180gr TCG loaded at 1.200. That flat point hits the feed ramp and it is stuck. Clearing that requires locking the slide to the rear, pulling the mag out and putting a new one in. I appreciate any advise!
  17. Dawson FO front site will be here tomorrow. Ed Brown GS, Wilson firing pin, Wilson extractor, and Wilson disconnector will be here next week. I put in an STI hammer and sear and 10-9 flat trigger last week. New recoil spring, main spring, and firing pin spring will also be here next week. I also installed the Dawson Ice magwell and have 6 Dawson 10 round mags. Gunsmith for tuning will happen soon. I'll see about getting the FPS before them. I too must tinker with everything!
  18. Yeah, I think I'll be keeping this gun and keeping it as is! Last night's Tuesday Night Steel match and my first time shooing in Single Stack. I usually shoot in Limited and am ranked as C class in that division. I shot the match twice last night, once in Limited and once in SS. I shot SS .29 seconds faster than I shot Limited.
  19. The gun showed up today and the breech face is a perfect fit for 9mm! Looks like I'll be shooting minor until I decide I need to shoot major. Thanks for the lively discussion!
  20. I just looked on their website and according to the schedule they only do one Tuesday night USPSA match per month. It says it includes a classifier so I'm assuming it's an official match. It's the fourth Tuesday of each month. It doesn't say anything about the Thursday steel match though, so who knows how accurate that schedule is.
  21. I've heard that it's a much faster match than Rio. I really want to check out their Tuesday USPSA match, especially if it's an official match. I just don't want to make that drive! I live West of Val Vista and South of Baseline, so I guess that's the NW portion of the lakes. What kind of work does your smith do? I'm looking for a good one to do a trigger job on a new 1911.
  22. If this were the Tuesday Night Steel match at Rio Salado I would just now be getting home, and it's only a 15 minute drive for me! Phx R&G is a much further drive for me. That match must have gone pretty quickly. How many people were there and how long did it take you to get through the match? And if you don't mind me asking, where about in Gilbert do you live? I'm off of Val Vista and Baseline in Val Vista Lakes.
