  1. I'm thinking of buying more mags for my P14 and was wondering if anyone has purchased the new (2013) design P14 OEM mags. What's the difference between the current design and the old one?
  2. I actually ran into this problem today. I had 5 FTF out of about 70 using CCI 550 SPP. Solid primer hits, big dents, and they wouldn't go off even after multiple retries. Very weird. First time I've ever seen this and I've shot thousands of CCI primers.
  3. Thanks! Just came back from the range with my chrono data, hope this helps anyone considering these bullets from Penn Bullets 115gr Penn Bullet SWCBB @ 1.06 COAL http://www.pennbullets.com/9mm/9mmswcbb.html S&W M&P Pro 5" 3.7gr N320 Low- 1079 High- 1097 Avg- 1086 ES- 18.2 SD- 7.68 n- 5 pf- 125 4.0gr N320 Low- 1082 High- 1163 Avg- 1127 ES- 81 SD- 40.5 n- 3 (chrono didn't pick up two shots) pf- 129 4.3gr N320 Low- 1194 High- 1216 Avg- 1205 ES- 23 SD- 9 n- 5 pf- 138 CZ 75 Shadow 3.7gr N320 Low- 1062 High- 1083 Avg- 1072 ES- 21.7 SD- 10.3 n- 4 pf- 123 4.0gr N320 Low- 1120 High- 1145 Avg- 1134 ES- 25.8 SD- 10.7 n- 5 pf-130 4.3gr N320 Low- 1173 High- 1200 Avg- 1190 ES- 27.3 SD- 11.4 n- 5 pf- 137 Temperature - 52F Barometer - 30.09in Hg Winds - 15 mph (shielded behind berm) So as you can see, I didn't have to touch 4.5gr to make PF. Didn't see any pressure signs at 4.3, but didn't feel like tempting fate by shooting the higher load as I had already made PF and then some. I'll be going back with the 4.0gr load for accuracy testing in a day or two, it looks promising though, the round is very light in the gun. I just found out that my match ammo had been chrono-ing in at 140pf, so this load is like taking a vacation!
  4. Thanks. I'm starting out with 3.7, 4.0, 4.2, and then 4.5. Hopefully I'll get to PF before I hit pressure.
  5. Before I go chrono this load, can anyone chime as to the safety of this load? I know it's getting pretty close to the limit as far as powder and OAL choice but I'm hoping someone has already loaded this up before! I'll be shooting it out of a M&P Pro and a CZ 75 Shadow.
  6. That store is going to have a bit of a reduced selection!
  7. No buffer, but I have swapped out my 12 pound variable for a 14 pound. Perhaps the extra oomph will help it chamber more reliably.
  8. This is what I'm trying to shoot. It's a 200gr SWC from Black Bullets over 5.0 grains of Solo 1000. Measures 1.250 inches long, has about 0.05" of shoulder sticking out of the case, and has been crimped to about .468. Does that jive with other's SWC dimensions? I tried to shoot a match with these today and it was a disaster, multiple 3 point jams just ruined my day. I'll be testing out Mec Gar mags tomorrow and perhaps they will run better, but I've been fooled before at the practice range by perfect operation then jam after jam on the clock.
  9. Does anybody have a procedure that they do to test the reliability of their gear prior to going out and shooting it in match conditions? Kindof a "murphy's law" test if you will? I always seem to get the short end of the stick when playing with new loads or equipment. For example, I've been working on a 200gr SWC match load and have gotten it to feed smooth as silk at home while manually racking the slide and on the practice range shooting freestyle, one hand, weak hand, upside down, etc... So I go into the match feeling pretty good, but I suffer 3 point jam after 3 point jam which has me thinking, "what kind of test can I do prior to a match to predict what crazy things my gun will do during a match?"
  10. Wow, I didn't even notice that crack! I will be ordering at least one new mag, have no idea how that mag cracked, it's 15 years old so it's fair game. Found out that Arredondo makes followers for the Para but I think I will just buy two new mags. What's the difference between the Mec-Gar mag vs the new design para mag? The only thing I can see is a difference of $10 between them and they both have excellent review.
  11. Good information wide45. Read through it and did more tinkering. I have 4 mags with basepads and a fifth one with normal capacity. Transplanted the guts of the worst mag into the fifth tube and got one to work. Made the second suspect one better by swapping followers and springs between the mags until I found the correct combination. Does anyone sell replacement followers for these mags? They seem to be "gritty" sliding up and down the mag tube compared to my other guns. Is this normal and I should increase spring power to compensate or do I need to find some newer followers? Para's pro shop doesn't have them for sale and Dawson doesn't offer them either. Would STI followers work in the para tubes? Thanks again.
  12. I just aquired a new to me P14-45 Limited and 4 mags with dawson extensions. Taking it out for function testing, it seems like all of the mags will run round nose just fine but only two of them will run SWC 100% (had two 3 point jams in about 100 rounds). At home I've been playing with the mags and have determined that the difference between the two that run and the two that don't seems to be the angle of the round coming out of the mag. The good mags present the round at a higher angle and will feed into the gun like butter (very slow slide racking has them going into the chamber with no hitches at all) while the other two send the SWC into the feed ramp and rely on it "bouncing" up into the chamber. This causes 3 point jams if I rack slowly or if Murphy strikes at the range. Where do I start tweaking to get the two bad mags to feed SWC reliably? I called Para and the CS agent on the line basically shrugged and told me to buy new mags. I've included a photo of the mags to confuse everyone, I tried to capture the difference in feed angle. I can supply more photos on request if it wil help in the diagnostic.
  13. Is it possible to put a .40 5" upper on a 9mm pro frame? I've read of people going the other way, but haven't see anyone report if it works in the opposite direction.
  14. This should be a really simple answer, but I got the roller handle in the mail today and mounted it to the press. Is it supposed to be able to spin around? I've tightened the nut at the bottom with a moderate amount of force and the entire handle rotates around the mount! Is this normal or do I really have to torque on it some more? Edit - Never mind, I realize that it's got a o-ring thing on the nut so I used a bigger wrench and got it tight enough to not move.
  15. Nice and simple! I'll rig one up when I get home and see how that goes. Thanks for the idea.
  16. I replaced the cotter pin with one of the primer tube wires and that seems to work well. I'm using a Lee depriming die so it's just a straight pin with no spring, could that be the issue, I'm not sure how the Dillon depriming die works as far as it being spring loaded.
  17. You can also very slightly unscrew the FCD out and it will act like a regular crimp die since the round won't engage the sizing part of the die anymore.
  18. I'm using Federal standard SPP. If the primers are hanging on the end of the pin, any ideas to encourage them to fall off? I'm going to try a fridge magnet on the chute for extra weight and a paper extension to see if i can increase the catch area of the press.
  19. My 550 has developed an annoying problem over the last couple of months. When I deprime 9mm, about 20% of the primers completely miss the chute and wind up bouncing all over the place and some of them wind up jamming up the press because the block the primer block from sliding into place for the next round. My little chute looks like it's swinging out properly, it seems like somehow the depriming pin is launching the primers all over the place instead of dropping them down cleanly. Anyone experience this problem?
  20. I've found that to be the same for me. The Dillon expander die for 9mm tends to really "bell" the case and that makes it hard to fit into the Lee seating die's mouth. I've gotten much better results by swapping the Dillon powder measure out for a a Lee autodisk, their expander die pushes the case mouth open by increasing the diameter of the case rather than putting a trumpet on the end.
  21. I've just moved to Laughlin AFB to begin my pilot training but have the oppertunity to hurry up and wait for a month or so for training to start so I'm looking for events to shoot. I'm wondering if anyone in the local area (~45 minute drive) hosts regular pistol/rifle competitions. I know that the first weekend of the month there's a zombie shoot/IDPA in Del Rio, but I would love to see if theres anything else that I can fill my weekends with without having to drive all the way to San Antonio because when pilot training starts we may be resticted to the local area. Thanks!
  22. I have shot 160gr out of my M&P Pro loaded to about 1.15 with 3.0gr of N320. It makes about 135pf and doesn't group worth anything, we're talking about shotgun patterns at 25 yards. I'd stick to 124s or 147s at the most, in my experience the M&P does not stablize heavy bullets enough to make them accurate.
  23. For fun, I'm going to shoot my 92 in limited tomorrow. What is the approved start condition for this gun? In prod it's hammer down safety off, but in limited is it still hammer down safety off because engaging the safety decocks the gun?
  24. I wouldn't bother unless you load small pistol exclusively. I ordered one as soon as it became available and it loads Federal SPP just fine but has not actually been able to load a single Federal LPP. The device has problems with LPP because they are flat and wide, just can't shake them past the flip tray. Tried to open up the hole a bit, but it just made it much worse as now they just get jammed sideways. Luckily 90% of my round count is spp but I would buy knowing that it might not be perfect out of the box.
  25. I wound up buying a ultralight kit from CGW and had my suspicions when their 12# spring felt exactly the same as the stock spring.
