Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. Thanks for the responses, I feel better about using them for my minor loads too.
  2. I bought a couple thousand of federal small magnum pistol primers at my local range thinking I was going to use them for my minor production load, but read about possible breech face erosion on the forum which turned me off to doing it. I also just started loading 9major, using Winchester small rifle primers, is there any reason not to use the magnum primers for 9major?
  3. Thank you for your service to our country
  4. Great posts guys! Gonna work on improving grip strength now......
  5. I shoot USPSA regularly at Pinetucky, so I assume you are attending the class this weekend there. I started shooting last year and its been fun, the guys that run USPSA here are great, I've learned a lot from them, as well as this forum, which I've only recently started visiting (wish I started sooner!). My couple cents would be starting with a 9mm that fits you well just because the cost of ammo and less recoil to learn how to manage. You'll love the class, it will be informative and I'm sure you'll be able to get to handle different guns, hope to see you at the matches!
  6. Compensator ports do not lower the PF. Once the bullet leaves the barrel, it's going as fast as it ever will. The only "ports" that would lower your PF would be popple holes in the barrel that bleed off gas before the bullet exits the barrel. That said, sometimes variances in PF from one gun to another have more to do with the actual barrel. No two barrels are exactly alike, no matter how tight the manufacturing tolerances. Fire the same load through two identical guns and you probably will not get the same results. Thanks for reply, I agree that no two guns are alike, and it makes sense about the compensator ports, I was under the impression all the holes would lower the PF. This gun does have popple holes, it has 6. Does wear on the barrel bleed PF over time? I would assume so, but I wouldn't know how much, after how many rounds. I'm not sure how old the gun is, but I think she has seen better days.
  7. so true, follow through is key! hickok 45 is awesome, great post!
  8. Thanks for the reply Jack, I got a lot of good data from the forum, and I picked out the most common one I saw and started with it. I rechecked my ammo hat I shot today and I quoted the wrong OAL, its a box of 1.17-1.172. When I chrono'd it I got PF 170, I'm wondering if its just the gun, it has many ports (turbo comp), that the power factor comes out a little lower than what everyone else gets with the same load. I also wonder if maybe when the OAL gets a little longer the decreased compression causes some of the powder not to burn and land on my arm, just a thought.
  9. Hi everyone, I'm new to open, just got a used open gun a couple months ago and still learning my way with it. I was at the range today and on a couple rounds I fired I felt like there was a dust landing on my right arm, as if it was powder from the ejected case, is that what it is? Is it unburned powder or powder in the middle of burning that was landing on my arm? Is this something I have to worry about? I'm using 7.2g of autocomp, once fired federal brass, OAL 1.165, 124g armscor fmj bullet, winchester small rifle primers, through a limcat dragoncat. Thanks in advance for the help!
  10. excellent post, im hoping to get to that point someday, i started shooting earlier this year as well, and im progressing very much like you are, just havent reached calling the shot consistently, once in a blue moon right now.
  11. Just got my first DQ earlier today at a charity match, Toys for Tots at Mid Carolina Rifle Range, I just started moving from left to right, went to reload, I left my trigger finger in the guard when I went to hit the mag release with my thumb, then bang, round into the berm. I usually get my finger out and put it on the frame and I naturally press against the frame when I hit the mag release, so I think that natural pressure caused me to fire the gun when I still had the finger in the trigger guard. I believe this is what happened cause it happened so fast. I think I let my mind believe that it was an automatic move for me and had a mental lapse. Very humbling, you can practice over and over, but you have to stay focused when you're in the game.
