Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. Sounds good here too. I started with a Mossberg 930 Turkey model with the 24" ported barrel, added the Nordic +6 and barrel clamp, Carlson IC choke, and Choate charging handle. Also had the mag well flared. It does well for me, but my Mossy only seems to shoot the Wally World light loads if I keep the gas piston clean...otherwise it needs loads of 1300+ fps to be reliable.
  2. I currently have a Weaver Super Slam Dangerous Game 1-5x24mm scope on my 3-Gun rifle. I know it's not the sexiest optic out there, but the price was right for my budget and I can hit what I'm aiming at with it. During matches when I try to dial up the magnification, though, I find the twist is a little tough with the small nubs they provide. Does anyone know of a manufacturer who does make (or would make) a cat tail/scope lever for this scope?
  3. I built my 3-Gun rifle on a Spikes lower, and have a Stag lefty upper on it that was built to my specs by Spikes (benefits of having their shop in your back yard). Fit between Spikes lower and Stag upper is excellent. The only fit exception I have is a slight variance between the flattop on the upper being slightly taller than the handguard rail, but it doesn't affect my scope mount.
  4. I have been using the Timney 3# drop in solid trigger unit in my 3-Gun rifle, and couldn't be happier. It breaks clean with no creep, reset is short and has not had any hiccups to speak of. Price was reasonable compared to closest competitors ($175ish). I'd recommend it to anyone.
  5. I have been shooting in my local 3-Gun matches for almost a year now, and I too am a lefty shooter. Since true lefty shotguns (Benelli, Remington) are difficult to find and therefore pricey, I went with a Mossberg 930 semi-auto. It fits your price range, eats nearly any ammo you feed it as long as you keep the shotgun relatively clean, and has a bounty of aftermarket add-ons if you choose to dress it up. I did splurge and had an AR rifle built with a Stag lefty upper when I found a deal too good to pass up, but my scattergun is still a righty. If I hit the lottery and can afford to buy true lefty guns, I'll give a complete collection a whirl - in the meantime I'm sticking with a right handed shotty that I found I can shoot fast and well. Good luck!
  6. I had the loading port opened forward, and it completely made the difference. No pinching during quick reloads, and the work was done cleanly. I think this shotgun is good to go for me now...until I get more serious about USPSA-sanctioned matches rather than local gun club matches. Perhaps by then the Miculek version will be readily available, or I can use the Kel-Tec KSG for heavy metal category.
  7. I bought a Glock 21 for 3-Gun matches, and set to work attempting to lighten the trigger pull with a 3.5# connector and competition spring package from Glockworx. Had them all installed by a Glock armorer and it functioned properly, but the small trigger safety would not fully engage when you let your finger off the trigger after firing. A Glock master armorer looked at it during a GSSF match, and told me the firing pin spring was underpowered. He replaced it with the factory spring, and now my trigger pull has gone up to about 10 pounds!!! Any suggestions on what combo of springs (and their # designations) would work best to get me back down to a competition trigger pull?
  8. I am issued a Glock 21 at work, and I compete with a Glock 21...it's just not my issued Glock 21. My issued gun cannot be modified in any way by anyone other than an agency armorer. Therefore, I purchased another Glock 21 and went to work with things like trigger adjustments, spring replacements, different sights, and stippling which make competition shooting a little faster. However, all of the training and practice I've ever had has been with Glocks so changing mechanics for 3-Gun matches seemed silly. Plus I have a full set of holsters and mag pouches already for the Glock 21, and I get free .45 rounds from work to practice with....I just choose to "practice" at my monthly 3-Gun matches.
  9. I have been on the prowl for a scope lever for my Weaver Super Slam Dangerous Game 1-5x24 scope - anyone know of a company with one in production, or is this going to be a custom venture for me?
  10. My law enforcement agency has a "Top Gun" competition each year, and I've made it to the finals each year since it's inception. I went this year as the defending champ, and to my delight, I found the head-to-head shooting course only consisted of seven targets...although five were found on a Texas Star. To make matters worse, mags could only be loaded with four rounds each, in order to force reloads. Made it to the semis, and was facing a guy I beat last year. The rule was laid out before we shot the course: "In law enforcement, hits don't count - neutralizing the target is required. If it doesn't fall, keep shooting until it does." Started with a steel popper (hit), then onto the Star...missed first shot, hit the next two. Four shots fired = reload. Three targets to go on the Star, and almost no movement. Fired at the next remaining Star target, and smacked it dead center with a 200 grain +P .45 round from my duty Glock 21. Result? IT DIDN'T FALL!!! Shot it again so it fell, then cleared the last two on the Star - but now I'm out (4 round magazines SUCK). As I'm reloading again for my final target, my competitor drops his final bowling pin target. I failed in my bid to repeat as agency Top Gun because I hit the target TOO WELL. Apparently, the spring-loaded device holding the target in place allowed the plate to bow outward, then snapped it right back into place because there was no sideways torque to my hit on it. The guy who beat me head-to-head in that course is our new agency Top Gun for this year, and he won a new Glock 27 Gen4 pistol for his efforts. Bitter? Nah - still in the top 4 shooters of an agency with 1800+ gun-toters...just needed to vent a little. LOL
  11. I started shooting matches here in Orlando back in April 2011, and have been slowly expanding my horizons with a recent match in Port Malabar. I finally own a complete set of weapons set up the way I want them, so now I can spend my extra money (yeah, right!) on ammo and travel. Hope to see you sometime!
  12. I am having a few mods on my 930 done later this month, after the next 3-Gun match. I am having the loading port opened forward (as illustrated in post #12) and opening the lifter radius from side to side as Outsydlooknin75 described in post #50. Hopefully that will help speed up reload times, and keep my thumb from looking like hamburger...getting pinched like that is bad enough, but when you are hemophiliac it means you bleed at the range ALL DAY LONG!
  13. Here's a few questions related to the welded lifter modification and the shotgun in general: 1) Rather than welding extra material onto the elevator (lifter) to fill in the space between the two ends would it be more feasible to remove the two forks from the end, rounding the end and leaving the elevator (lifter) slightly shorter so as not to pinch whatever finger is loading rounds? Would shortening it affect the functionality? 2) Has anyone had any problems with your 930 Turkey model being ammo-finicky? Mine only seems to cycle reliably if I feed it hotter loads like 1350+ fps bird loads or slugs. The lower speed stuff either fails to fully eject and re-chambers the spent shell, or it ejects the spent shell but does not chamber the new round. The hotter loads function flawlessly, but I'd rather spend less money on standard ammo if I can diagnose the problem.
