Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. Well, I did some practice after shooting a Steel Challenge match last weekend. I had loaded up some dummy rounds and ran the ball & dummy drill. It was shameful how much I was anticipating recoil and pushing the barrel down. I did notice that most of the time I pushed straight down or down and a little to the left. The funny thing was that I even pulled the trigger after seeing slide lock and still anticipated recoil that I knew was not coming. This was towards the end of the day when I was already pretty tired, which I suppose means that my brain was not really digesting that information well. Looks like I have a lot of practice in my future. What does everyone suggest? More ball and dummy drills? More dry fire?
  2. Interesting. After I got home from the range and started reading, I put ball & dummy drills on the top of the list. I am going to do some this weekend to see how badly I am anticipating the recoil and try to condition my mind to not do that.
  3. I'll give that a try. I need more work on my trigger control anyway, so this could serve two good purposes.
  4. I have been shooting competitively only for a few months now, but the more I read, the more I realize the need to improve my speed and my control (and accuracy). Part of that process, I understand, is learning to call your shots. But, before I can do that, I have to get over my flinching problem. Last weekend, I went out to the range to shoot and shoot and shoot in an effort to self-diagnose as much as possible. Although I can, like most others, shoot pretty accurately when going slowly, I cannot seem to keep my eyes open when doing slow fire. I double plugged, hoping it would cure the flinch, but I still have it. When I dry fire, I have no problems. And, oddly, when I unload a string in fast fire, I can keep both eyes open the entire time. I am usually going faster than my ability to watch the sights, so I am not exactly calling my shots. But, I am not flinching, either. Any thoughts or tips? Will
  5. The first step you should take is to order every DVD available in the BE store and loan them to any friends who are about to have surgery in order to make their two weeks in bed as productive as two weeks in bed can be. This is just my opinion. Just as soon as said friend gives me a small loan to pay for videos, I will order them and loan them right back out to him.
  6. I try to shoot the monthly IDPA match at Central Alabama Gun Club and see that some of the folks come from East Alabama. Isn't EAGC in Phenix City? When are the matches?
  7. Just wanted to pop in and say hello. I've been lurking here for months ever since I started shooting IDPA locally. Prior to that, I shot only casually and with no instruction, although I have been a shooter my entire life. I have learned quite a bit just reading the forums but thought that now is the time to start actively asking questions and getting help in order to improve my game. Thanks, Will
